Introduction: A current review of the literature allows us to see that Mental Health Literacy, Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being have been the target of growing interest in the scientific community. However, there is still little research on the relationship between these constructs, especially considering the adolescence stage. Therefore, this study aims to contribute to the investigation of the relationships between these variables, clarifying the potential predictive value of Mental Health Literacy in relation to Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being. It is also intended to analyse the effect of some sociodemographic variables on the levels of Mental Health Literacy, Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being. Method: A sample consisting of 341 Portuguese adolescents (181 female), aged 15 to 18, answered a set of self-report questions, by completing the following instruments: Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire, Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire - Youth version, and Mental Health Continuum - Short Form. Results: Analysis of the data obtained reveals that there is a significant and positive association between the constructs, with the correlation between Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being being the strongest and most significant. It appears that Mental Health Literacy has predictive and positive power in relation to Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being. It is also noted that the scales scores reveal a gender effect and that those who attended psychology consultations obtained lower scores in Emotional Intelligence and Well-Being. Discussion and Conclusion: Implications for research and practice are drawn from the relationships found. Assessment of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon sequestration in dairy goat farming systems in Northern Extremadura, Spain
Livestock farming is an activity closely linked to the environment, directly affecting its surrounding ecosystem while utilizing the natural resources it provides. Accordingly, it is essential to study these production systems in order to implement more sustainable models that allow for a balance between socioeconomic and environmental factors. The main objective of this study was to analyze the environmental impact of nine different dairy goat production systems located in northern Extremadura, Spain. The selected farms ranged from extensive and organic production models to more intensive ones. The methodology used was a life cycle assessment (LCA) to calculate the carbon footprint, following the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) guidelines. A comprehensive evaluation of emissions was conducted, considering the different global warming potentials (GWPs) established by the IPCC for the main gases associated with livestock farming. In addition, carbon sequestration (Cₛₑq) was incorporated into the analysis to assess the contribution of goat farming to climate change mitigation based on its production management. CH₄ emissions were the main source (44–67%) of GHGs, followed by CO₂ from inputs (20–48%), and finally N₂O (7–13%). A trend was observed linking increased CH₄ emissions to more extensive and less productive livestock systems. However, the significant role of soil as a carbon sink was highlighted, as it greatly offsets the emissions produced, demonstrating its potential mitigation due to Cₛₑq, particularly in more extensive models. The importance of this factor suggests that it should be taken into account in such studies to provide a realistic view of the final impact of each production system. The funding was provided by the Junta de Extremadura and FEDER Funds within the VI Plan Regional de I+D+i (2017–2020) through the Research Project MitigaDehex (Project reference IB20070).peerReviewe
Lexical availability and orthography: analysis of Spanish students of English as a foreign language
The studies on lexical availability emerged in France with a clearly didactic purpose, aiming to facilitate the acquisition of French by the inhabitants of what was then called the French Union, by foreigners and by immigrants who had arrived in the country. Despite the diversification of their applications, there is an aspect—namely, errors made by respondents—that remains underexplored, especially in the field of foreign language learning. This present study addresses, within this framework of availability, the examination of lexical errors in English among a sample of 75 participants from three different educational levels: primary, secondary, and university. Based on data collected from 6 areas of interest, the study pursues a dual objective: first, to conduct a detailed analysis of the spelling situation in the sample to create a corpus of the most frequent misspellings; and second, to analyse how these errors evolve throughout the process of learning English as a foreign language. The results obtained indicate that the errors made most frequently by the respondents are of a graphic nature, followed by errors of a phonetic-phonological nature.
Identification of copy-number variants in patients with overgrowth disorders
En este informe, describimos estos hallazgos y comentamos los genes asociados con OGS que se encuentran dentro de las regiones CNV.Overgrowth syndromes (OGS) comprise a heterogeneous group of disorders whose main characteristic is that the weight, height or the head circumference are above the 97th centile or 2–3 standard deviations above the mean for age, gender, and ethnic group. Several copy-number variants (CNVs) have been associated with the development of OGS, such as the 5q35 microdeletion or the duplication of the 15q26.1-qter, among many others. In this study, we have applied 850K SNP-arrays to 112 patients and relatives with OGS from the Spanish OverGrowth Registry Initiative. We have identified CNVs associated with the disorder in nine individuals (8%). Subsequently, whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis was performed in these nine samples in order to better understand these genomic imbalances. All the CNVs were detected by both techniques, settling that WGS is a useful tool for CNV detection. We have found six patients with genomic abnormalities associated with previously wellestablished disorders and three patients with CNVs of unknown significance, which may be related to OGS, based on scientific literature. In this report, we describe these findings and comment on genes associated with OGS that are located within the CNV regions. This research was funded by the FIS PI20/01053, from the ISCIII with funding from FEDER, Europe; by PMP21/00063 from the ISCIII with funding from the FEDER, Europe, and PMP22/00049 from the ISCIII with funding from the FEDER, Europe.peerReviewe
Labdanum Resin from Cistus ladanifer L. as a Source of Compounds with Anti-Diabetic, Neuroprotective and Anti-Proliferative Activity
Labdanum resin or “gum” can be obtained from Cistus ladanifer L. by two different extrac tion methods: the Zamorean and the Andalusian processes. Although its main use is in the fragrance and perfumery sectors, ethnobotanical reports describe its use for medicinal purposes in managing hyperglycemia and mental illnesses. However, data concerning the bioactivities and pharmacolog ical applications are scarce. In this work, it was found that the yield of labdanum resin extracted by the Andalusian process was 25-fold higher than the Zamorean one. Both resins were purified as absolutes, and the Andalusian absolute was purified into diterpenoid and flavonoid fractions. GC-EI-MS analysis confirmed the presence of phenylpropanoids, labdane-type diterpenoids, and methylated flavonoids, which are already described in the literature, but revealed other compounds, and showed that the different extracts presented distinct chemical profile. The potential antidiabetic activity, by inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase, and the potential neuroprotective activity, by inhibition of acetylcholinesterase, were investigated. Diterpenoid fraction produced the higher α-amylase inhibitory effect (~30% and ~40% at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respectively). Zamorean absolute showed the highest α-glucosidase inhibitory effect (~14% and ~24%, at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respec tively). Andalusian absolute showed the highest acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effect (~70% and ~75%, at 0.5 and 1 mg/mL, respectively). Using Caco-2 and HepG2 cell lines, Andalusian absolute and its purified fractions showed moderate cytotoxic/anti-proliferative activity at 24 h exposure (IC50 = 45–70 µg/mL, for Caco-2; IC50 = 60–80 µg/mL, for HepG2), whereas Zamorean absolute did not produce cytotoxicity (IC50 ≥ 200.00 µg/mL). Here we show, for the first time, that labdanum resin obtained by the Andalusian process, and its fractions, are composed of phytochemicals with anti-diabetic, neuroprotective and anti-proliferative potential, which are worth investigating for
the pharmaceutical industry. However, toxic side-effects must also be addressed when using these products by ingestion, as done traditionally. The authors acknowledge the funding from the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education (MCTES), and NORTE 2020 (North Regional Operational Program 2014/2020), through European (UE) and National funds, under the projects UIDB/04033/2020 (CITAB; (https://doi.org/10.54499/UIDB/04033/2020), as well as the PhD grant to David Frazão through AgriChains (PB/DB/135330/2017).
School refusal has important repercussions on the lives of children and adolescents, seriously affecting their personal, academic, and social adjustment. Negative attitudes towards school can be caused simultaneously for several reasons and, due to the existing heterogeneity, Kearney, and Silverman (1990) grouped them into four functional conditions: I. Avoidance of school stimuli that generate negative affectivity; II. Avoidance of school situations that generate social aversion or fear of evaluation; II. Capturing the attention of significant others; and IV. Get tangible reinforcements outside of school. Given its tendency to coexist with internalizing disorders, it is essential to understand its correlation with school anxiety, which is one of the significant problems in the child and adolescent population. In this way, the present study aims to identify the probability of predictive capacity of school anxiety on high school refusal. There were 1786 participants (51% men) aged 15 to 18 years (MAge = 16.31; SD = 1.00). The instruments administered were the Spanish version of the School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised (SRAS-R-C; Gonzálvez et al., 2016) and the School Anxiety Inventory (IAES; García-Fernández et al., 2011). The results reveal that depending on the dimension of school anxiety evaluated, it acts as a negative or positive predictor of school refusal, also depending on the type of school refusal assessed. These findings highlight the connection between the avoidance of negative affectivity associated with school and the experience of anxiety in various school settings, emphasizing the need to address both school refusal and anxiety in the educational setting.peerReviewe
Sensitivity of cholinesterases and carboxylesterases to pharmaceutical products in Tinca tinca
Discharges to the aquatic environment of pharmaceuticals represent a hazard to the aquatic organisms. Subchronic assay with 17-alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and in vitro essays with pharmaceuticals of environmental concern were conducted to examine the sensitivity of tissue acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and carboxylesterase (CbE) activities of Tinca tinca to them. Subchronic exposure to 17-alpha-EE2 caused significant effects on brain, liver, and muscle CbE, but no on AChE activities. Most of the pharmaceuticals tested in vitro were considered as weak inhibitors of tissular AChE activity. Depending on the tissues, some compounds were classified as moderate inhibitors of CbE activity while other were categorized as weak enzymatic inhibitors.
An opposite trend was observed depending on the tissue, while brain and liver CbE activities were inhibited, the muscle CbE activity was induced. Changes experienced on enzymatic activities after exposure to pharmaceuticals might affect the physiological functions in which these enzymes are involved. In vitro exposure to 17-alpha-EE2 in tench could be an informative, but not a surrogate model to know the effect of this
synthetic estrogen on AChE and CbE activities.peerReviewe
Design of an UV-C shielded biopolymer based on a poly(lactic acid)/ quercetin/magnesium composite
The use of biopolymers like poly(lactic acid) (PLA) doped with natural and harmless active agents in industrial, medical and food packaging applications is of great interest due to the multitude of property enhancements included. External factors, such as UV exposure, can accelerate the degradation process of these biomaterials and cause changes in structural and mechanical properties of medical or industrial devices. In this research, PLA-based composites with different degrees of crystallinity are fabricated using magnesium (Mg) particles and quercetin (Qr) as doping agents, providing new biomaterials with different responses against an UV-C radiation source. Physical surface changes are studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), goniometry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Chemical modifications are evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermal response is studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). PLA crystallinity is crucial in the polymer response to UV radiation. Under irradiation Mg particles cause a catalytic effect that enhances the degradation by hydrolysis of PLA chains. However, when Qr is present this effect is inhibited, making the Qr/Mg combination an ideal enrichment to protect the polymer from chemical photooxidation, while improving the surface mechanical properties of the new biocomposite.Authors are grateful to projects TED2021-131345B-I00, supported by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/FEDER “Una manera de hacer Europa”, IB20092 supported by Government of Extremadura and Project

A longitudinal study during scientific teacher training: the association between affective and cognitive dimensions
Learning processes are undoubtedly linked to affective factors. Motivation, interest, curiosity and emotions have been already detected as the core of learning processes: affective domain modulates learning. In this work, a quantitative
longitudinal study (three courses) has been conducted during primary school teacher training. An initial diagnosis of affective variables (emotions and selfefficacy) and scientifical knowledge revealed that prospective teachers claim feeling negative emotions toward physics and chemistry contents whereas these students report low scientific knowledge. Therefore, a metacognitive and emotional program was implemented in order to modify these emotions
and to improve learning. After three courses, emotions, self-efficacy and scientific knowledge were assessed again. The results obtained suggest that the implementation of active methodologies for teaching science could promote
positive emotions, it could lead prospective teachers to improve their selfefficacy’ perception and promotes their learning. The relationships between the different variables considered in the research were studied, and a significant
relationship was found between the affective variables (self-efficacy and emotions) and cognitive variables. Prospective teachers involved in this research reported more positive emotions, an increase in their self-efficacy perception and an improvement in their scientific knowledge. These findings may lead to a deeper understanding of the affective role in science learning and could be extended to other content that also elicits negative emotions. The author(s) declare financial support was received for the research, authorship, and/or publication of this article.
