Is there truth in fiction? Lessons from readers’ responses to dementia fiction
This paper addresses the question ’is there truth in fiction?’, by synthesising a range of disciplinary approaches to the issue, as well as drawing on empirical research carried out with readers of fiction about dementia (hereafter, dementia fiction). We argue that fiction—perhaps because of its fictional status and apparatus—invites readers to consider its truth value, to explore the possibilities of human experience and interrogate issues relative to their subjective experience, community or society. The findings have significant implications for the Medical Humanities’ use of fictional texts to explore lived medical conditions and experiences, as well as claims made about the potential for fiction to affect real-world understandings, awareness and empathy around the conditions depicted. We show that the techniques used in fictional language may be artifice, but they simulate a truth that corresponds with reality. This article is based on research funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, UK, grant number AH/S001476/1.peerReviewe

Assessment of botanical learning through an educational intervention based on aromatic plants and their uses in the immediate environment
In order to achieve meaningful learning and in view of the need for education for sustainable development (ESD), pedagogical proposals based on experiential methodologies, paying attention to what is taught and with what objective, are essential. Sustainability in education implies a new vision of the term integral sustainability (IS); this should not only focus on environmental aspects of sustainability, but make the whole process of learning sustainable in itself. Against this background, this article presents a non-formal educational intervention for secondary school biology and geology students focused on aromatic plants and associated traditional knowledge (which are locally relevant to the students), in support of the botany-related contents established in the formal curriculum. To evaluate the activity, pre-test and post-test questionnaires were completed by the students. The results revealed significant improvements in students’ ratings of motivation, scientific learning, and sustainable awareness, demonstrating the effectiveness of implementing pedagogical proposals related to the immediate environment for increasing interest in learning and conservation of natural resources.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Sports analysis of Wheelchair Basketball game statistics
Game statistics are used for the analysis of the performance of athletes. This allows the strengths and weaknesses of the players to be understood, and to design and implement training sessions for performance enhancement. Therefore, the objective of this study was to analyse the game statistics of the 2021 and 2023 European Champions and the 2023World Champions in Wheelchair Basketball (WB), both male and female. For this purpose, the game statistics of all the championships were collected, and the differences according to gender and competition analysed through a statistical and inferential analysis, considering the functional classification of the players, based on the Mann–Whitney U test for the comparison of gender, and the Kruskal–Wallis H test for the comparison between championships. The results showed that players with a classification higher than 3.0 have higher three-point and two-point throws, while players with a classification of 1.0 have lower effectiveness in shooting. Depending on the championship, a greater number of three-point throws and respective effectiveness was found in the 2023 World Championships, with the male athletes presenting a greater number of points. This information will support WB coaches in designing and implementing training sessions and patterns of play and movements in competitive moments to improve individual and team performance. This study was supported by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. under Grant UID04045/2020 and Instituto Politécnico de Setúbal. Also, the research was partially funded by the GOERD of University of Extremadura and the Research Vice-rectory of Universidad Nacional. This study has been partially supported by the funding for research groups (GR21149) granted by the Government of Extremadura (Employment and infrastructure office—Consejería de Empleo e Infraestructuras), with the contribution of the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) by the Optimisation of Training and Sports Performance Research Group (GOERD) of the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Extremadura.peerReviewe
The legal framework of the social and solidarity economy in Argentina. Configuration and evolution
The social and solidarity economy has deep antecedents in Argentine history, the origin of its main practices coinciding with the institutional configuration of the national State in the mid-19th century. The formation of the specific legal framework in this area, focused mainly on the cooperative and mutual movement, involved the development of a complex and prolonged process whose pace of progress was not adjusted, many times, to the speed of the changes inherent to the dynamism that characterized to the sector. Taking this into account, this work aims to characterize the evolution that described the legal regulation of the social and solidarity economy in the Argentine legal system. Through an analysis of a qualitative nature and with descriptive and reflective purposes, the trajectory of the configuration of the specific legal framework is traced, identifying its main instances. It is argued, in this sense, that in the evolution of the specific legal regime it is possible to distinguish two phases, one of them corresponding to the regulation of cooperativism and mutualism and another that is still in formulation focused on the need to provide regulatory coverage to the extended and diversified social and solidarity field.peerReviewe
Introduction: Previous studies have found brain abnormalities and deficits in cognitive functions in people with fibromyalgia. It is known that choreography or creative tasks significantly generate cognitive improvements. Various methods have been described in the literature to evaluate creative activities using electroencephalography (EEG), such as the imagination of dance improvisations. However, there is the notion that creative solutions can emerge during the action and that creative motor action may reflect new, statistically rare, and adaptive coordination and/or the control solutions performed.
Aim: This study seeks to establish an operational approach to test how constraints are combined to induce variability of movement and how to evaluate it, but without forgetting the ideation or preparation of the activity as a relevant section in the study of motor creativity. To this end, this study aims to validate and test the reliability and applicability of an innovative test of motor creativity: The Motor Creativity Assessment (MCA), with the aim of achieving an objective score of motor creativity that can be used to test patients and monitor the interventions.
Material and methods: to correctly satisfy the requirements of the standard protocol for clinical trials, this study has followed the SPIRIT 2013 Statement Items. A total of 13 women with fibromyalgia and 13 healthy women were included in the study. The individual's cognitive impairment, sleep quality, pain, quality of life, level of physical activity, fear of falling, and the impact of fibromyalgia will be studied. This study develops a specific test of motor creativity without the use of objects, with the aim of achieving an objective score of motor creativity. An observation score sheet allows motor creativity to be analyzed and scored by viewing a video of the creative movement test. The Enobio® instrument (Neuroelectrics, Cambridge, MA, USA) and Neuroelectrics® instrument driver software (NIC1) were used to record EEG and heart rate variability signals.ntroduction
But
The author A.M.-G. was supported by a grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sport (FPU17/03130). Hiring Forms of Companhia Antarctica Paulista as Sources for Economic Analysis of the Black Population in São Paulo Between 1920 and 1930
Uma rica fonte que nos trouxe indícios dessa população que ainda carece de estudos sobre sua inserção no mercado de trabalho formal na cidade de São Paulo entre 1920 e 1930.This article aims to shed light on the economic history of the black population in São Paulo between 1920 and 1930, through the analysis of employee hiring records of the Companhia Antarctica Paulista (CAP) in this period. Through documentary and bibliographical research and the Serial History methodology, we seek to reduce the gap in the historiography on the presence of black people in the post-abolition industry in São Paulo. As this is primary source research, we will contribute to studies on the dissemination of these sources; after all, the absence of research is largely due to the lack of access to documents. Using the 15 slots to fill in, we analyze: housing, salaries, and living costs. These employee records provide a rich source of information concerning this population that still lacks studies on its insertion in the formal job market in the city of São Paulo between 1920 and 1930.peerReviewe
Educating emotions: thoughts, self-esteem and behavior of adolescents based on their emotional education
Education must be conceived in a comprehensive manner, covering all aspects of the person, including, of course, those related to the emotions that the person and others experience. This statement has been increasing its importance, in such a way that, currently, Emotional Education has acquired a well-deserved relevance in all stages of life. Specifically, in adolescence this educational process is essential for young people to learn to know themselves and interact with people in a correct, positive and effective way. For this reason, emotional competencies must be developed from the earliest childhood, making good use of Emotional Education by families and educational centers to ensure that children can recognize, understand, regulate and effectively manage their emotions and do not succumb to negative thoughts that can generate maladaptive behaviors that are harmful to their physical and mental health. In this sense, the present work aims to analyze the influence of the educational contexts closest to adolescents, in order to investigate the thoughts, self-esteem and behaviors of these young people based on their Emotional Education. For that, an ad hoc questionnaire was used, consisting of 60 items, divided into three blocks (Likert-type scale, multiple responses and open questions); which was applied to a sample of adolescents (n=226) in an age group between 12 and 18 years old, Secondary Education students corresponding to school years from the 1st of E.S.O. and the 2nd of Secondary Graduate School. Among the most significant results we can highlight that empathy has been the subcategory with the highest score by all the school years analyzed, while emotional control has also been the lowest rated by each of them.peerReviewe
About the work of Roque Balduque in Lower Extremadura: the case of the Virgin of Llerena
This paper aims to prove the attribution of a Marian statue, (mis)named Assumption, lodged in Llerena (south-west Spain), to Flemish carver Roque de Balduque. By means of a comparative analysis with other known works of this master, several morphological anal-ogies in the arrangement of drapery and facial features are clearly identified, such as the complexity of the mantle folds, and the positioning of the hands, among other elements. It is furthermore stated that this image actually embodies an early type of Immaculate Con-ception rather than an Assumption, according to certain iconographic details. Hence Baldu-que’s activity in southern Extremadura is limited to this piece from Llerena, distinguished by its quality and distinctive imprint, and which was probably commissioned in Seville.peerReviewe
The formation and maturation of organs, systems and biomechanics, when exposed to adverse intra or extra uterine contexts, can generate congenital anomalies such as ankyloglossia, a possible explanation for some body asymmetries and impairments in neuro psychomotor evolution.
