Online mindfulness-based intervention for stress management in university students
Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) are effective tools for managing the stress associated with university student’s academic lives. Recently, these interventions have begun to be implemented online, emerging as effective and accessible alternatives in various contexts. However, there is limited research on their implications in academic settings. The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an online MBI in reducing academic stress levels and optimizing coping strategies among university students. A quasi-experimental design was employed, with an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG) using a pretest-posttest measurement approach. Two scales from the Academic Stress Questionnaire (ASQ; Cabanach et al., 2009) were used as measurement instruments, focusing on psychophysiological stress responses (R-ASQ) and coping strategies (C-ASQ).
The sample consisted of 87 first-year students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences at the University of Extremadura. Twenty of these students volunteered to form the EG and participate in an eight-week online mindfulness program.
The results indicated that the EG had lower average scores in the dimensions of academic stress and slightly higher scores in most coping strategy dimensions after the intervention, compared to the CG. However, the observed differences did not reach statistical significance. These findings highlight the necessity of enhancing the planning and design of online interventions, providing extended follow-up periods to examine their long-term effects and compare the outcomes in various populations and contexts.peerReviewe
Access to the Habit in the Iberian Military Orders: A comparative study of the Castilian Order of Santiago and the Portuguese Order of Cristo
This paper studies the differences between the procedures for granting habits in the Castilian Or-der of Santiago and the Portuguese Order of Cristo during de 17th and 18th centuries. Such disparity is particularly evident in the requirements for the acceptance of candidates and the significance of the “Economía de la merced” for each of the militias. Therefore, this study aims to identify the inequalities between the main militias of the Crowns of Castile and Portugal, respectively, in their newly esblished honorary role during the modern era.peerReviewe
In this thesis we address the role of the Ahr receptor in aging and its implication in pathophysiology, using liver tissue from Ahr-deficient mice as an experimental model. We found different genetic signatures that define the absence of the dioxin receptor and validated senescence markers. On the other hand, we studied the influence of age on reprogramming in vivo. In this research, we reprogrammed OSKM-rtTA-Rosa26 Ahr +/+ mice and OSKM-rtTARosa26 Ahr -/- mice, applying a partial reprogramming treatment to induce a transient expression of Yamanaka factors. We show how reprogramming can be altered by the absence of Ahr. We observed differences in the hepatic metabolic pattern, uncovered transcriptional profiles of accelerated aging and detected altered faecal microbial diversity. Finally, we examined the potential of Ahr in the initiation phase of cellular reprogramming. Understanding these processes and future studies could be key to defining possible treatments for liver aging pathologies.- Ayuda para contratos predoctorales para la formación de doctores FPI (PRE2018-085587) del Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades.

Excess secondary sludge reuse by H2O2 thermal dehydration
The excess of activated sludge generated in municipal wastewater treatment plants constitutes one of the challenging problems facing modern society. The high-water content of this waste makes difficult the transport, disposal, and management of these solids. In this work, activated sludge excess from a secondary clarifier has been dehydrated by means of a combination of temperature and hydrogen peroxide treatment. Three main operating variables have been considered to affect sludge dewaterability and filterability. Temperature (120–180 °C), hydrogen peroxide dose (0.01–0.03 M), and treatment time (20–60 min) influence have been assessed by completing a 15-run Box Behnken experimental design. Different output variables (water content, resistance to filtration, sedimentation volumetric index, extracellular polymeric substances, etc.) have been monitored. Generally, temperature seems to be the most influencing parameter to obtain a dehydrated sludge with acceptable management/disposal characteristics (sludge volume reduction and filterability). In line with the concept of circular economy, an attempt has been conducted to obtain a sustainable biosorbent from the dehydrated sludge generated in the previous stage. Optimum conditions of carbonization and activation revealed that the solid obtained at 400 °C by using ammonium nitrate as activation agent was the most efficient absorbent to eliminate some model compounds from water (namely, phenol, ofloxacin, and diuron); however, a clear improvement margin in the synthesis is foreseen.Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature. Dual vocational training students in Andalusia: Perspectives and challenges
The implementation of the dual vocational training policy establishes horizontal training between schools and the labour market, contributes to educational continuity and is an effective
measure against early school leaving. In addition, it has a link with the business sector that enables
labour integration and also participates in the training and qualification of students. To approach it,
we start from a historical overview of education, where we analyse the different laws passed in recent
decades and investigate dual vocational training as an effective policy for training for employment
and training of skills, abilities and competences necessary for the acquisition of a job. To this end, we
present a study in which we make visible, through interviews, the perspective of students in relation
to vocational training in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The majority of those interviewed
gave a positive assessment of these studies. Moreover, the interviews show how this educational
policy has a positive impact on the labour market insertion of the participants. This research was funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain; grant number RTI2018-101660-B-100.peerReviewe
Graphic culture in sacred spaces: considerations about a drediscovered set of grisaille in the limits of the old diocese of Cartagena
The aim of this research is to look at in the visual sources that inspire the mural decorations made in the sacred spaces of Antique Cartagena’s diocese during the Early Modern Age. More of these paintings are occulted under repaints, poorly maintained, or completely disappeared. We will take the opportunity the restoration of a wall paint-ings made with the grisaille technique in the sacristy of the Assumption Church of Yeste (Albacete). Thus, the main objective of the research is to analyse the artistic culture that allow these authors to configure scenes in full harmony with the artistic models executed in the great artistic centres of the diocesan area. Likewise, we link our analysis to the graphic sources that inspired these artists. Visibilizing and managing paradox: Redefining the role of non-executive directors
Publicado en: Corporate Governance, Vol. 24 No. 5, pp. 1156-1170. Con DOI: https://doi.org/10.1108/CG-01-2023-0038Purpose:
This paper aims to discuss the work of non-executive directors (NEDs) as inherently paradoxical. Paradox refers to the presence of persistent contradictions between interdependent forces. Those persistent tensions are explored, and approaches are indicated to stimulate the adaptive use of paradoxes as forces of innovation and renewal.
Design/methodology/approach:
This conceptual approach can be read as an invitation for corporate governance scholars to embrace the logic of paradox to expand the understanding of this topic. Paradox is not conceptualized as an alternative to dominant structural views, including board composition, but as a complementary conceptual perspective, a meta-theoretical lens to shed light on the tensions inherent to governance.
Findings:
The authors propose that paradox theory offers a fresh conceptual lens to study the role of NEDs. This approach may help NEDs to turn tensions and paradoxes visible to develop a rich understanding of their work, as well as helping them navigate the complexities of organizing, a process rich in inherent paradoxicality.
Originality/value:
Organizational paradox theory is a bourgeoning field of study, but the conceptual lens of paradox has still been underexplored in the study of corporate governance. This work was funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (UID/ECO/00124/2019, UIDB/00124/2020,

Humor in times of anger. Understanding "humor gráfico español del siglo XX" for a contemporary history class in black and white
Humor gráfico español del siglo XX appeared in 1970 as part of a collection of 100 titles, RTV Books, which was also published as the “Salvat Basic Library”; 96 cartoonists were included in this anthology, some of whom had already worked in the previous century. Retrospective Study of the Epidemiological–Clinical Characteristics of Burns Treated in a Hospital Emergency Service (2018–2022)
Background: Burns are a common and severe medical emergency requiring immediate specialized care to minimize damage and prevent complications. Burn severity depends on depth, extent, and location, with more complex care needed for burns on critical areas or extensive burns. Nursing is essential in burn management, providing immediate care, adapting treatments, managing pain, preventing infections, and offering emotional support for recovery. The study aims to analyse the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of burns treated at the Hospital Emergency Department of the Hospital Complex of Cáceres (Spain) from January 2018 to December 2022. It looks at factors like gender, age, hospital stay duration, emergency type (paediatric or adult), main diagnosis, skin thickness, burn degree, affected body areas, percentage of body surface area burned, and treatment types. It also investigates how treatment varies by gender, age, skin thickness, and burn severity. The relevance of this research lies in the fact that periodic epidemiological studies are essential to monitor changes in diseases, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, detect outbreaks quickly, update knowledge on risk factors, and guide health policy decisions. This ensures an adapted and effective response to the needs of the population. Methods: Retrospective, observational study that analysed burn cases treated at the Hospital Complex of Cáceres (Spain) 2018–2022. Inclusion criteria were based on ICD-10 codes for burns, excluding severe cases not treated in this service. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Student’s t-tests, Chi-square tests, and ANOVA. Results: 220 patients surveyed, with a mean age of 47 years and 60.9% male. Most burns (95.5%) affected the external body surface, with a mean hospital stay of 7.86 days. Medical treatment was provided to 75.5% of patients, and 24.5% required surgical intervention. Significant differences in treatment procedures were observed according to age, skin thickness, and burn degree. Older patients had more procedures and longer hospital stays. Excision and transfer procedures were more common in full-thickness and severe burns. Conclusions: The findings align with previous research on burn demographics and treatment approaches. Treatment differences by age and burn severity highlight the need for tailored interventions. The study underscores the importance of comprehensive burn management, including psychological support for improved long-term outcomes. Further research could explore the impact of socio-economic factors on burn incidence and treatment. This study was not registered.peerReviewe
