Knowledge Mapping of Blended Learning Classroom Environment Studies (1996-2023): A Bibliometric Analysis
The classroom environment has undergone a fundamental shift since the era of information and communication technologies, with blended learning (BL) gaining increasing attention in recent years. In light of the limited number of studies that have reviewed the integration of BL and classroom environments in scientific publications, the present study analyzed a total of 283 publications from the WOS database. This analysis provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis, which reveals the following key findings: Firstly, research in this area has shown progressive development, indicating its maturation over time. Secondly, Garrison emerged as the author with the highest number of citations in 67 records, while Kim stood out as the most prominent author citing Garrison. Thirdly, the top three countries and journals that have made the most significant contributions to these studies are the United States, China, and Spain, along with the journals Computers & Education, Internet and Higher Education, and the British Journal of Educational Technology. Fourthly, the most cited articles are Boelens et al. (2017), O’Flaherty et al. (2015), Abeysekera et al. (2015), Bernard et al. (2014), Thai et al. (2017), and Rasheed et al. (2020). Finally, it was not until 2008 that more keywords such as “computer-mediated communication” (related to the technological environment), “cooperative or collaborative learning” (related to the social environment), “engagement,” and “selfefficacy” (related to the cognitive environment) began to receive more scholarly attention. Digital Inclusion in English Language Teaching in Ukraine
In this paper authors research the digital inclusion in English language teaching in Ukraine. The authors concentrate on the investigation of the digital platform Sikorsky Distance that supports the digital skills development of University students. Special attention is given to forcibly displaced students, students from temporarily occupied territories, and studentsrefugees and students from non-urban environments. This research has clearly shown that the usage of digital platforms is a valuable source that helps students from temporarily occupied territories, students-refugees, and students from non-urban environments adapt to the English language learning process and are integrated into students’ communities
Convolutional Neural Network Architectures for Gender, Emotional Detection from Speech and Speaker Diarization
This paper introduces three system architectures for speaker identification that aim to overcome the limitations of diarization and voice-based biometric systems. Diarization systems utilize unsupervised algorithms to segment audio data based on the time boundaries of utterances, but they do not distinguish individual speakers. On the other hand, voice-based biometric systems can only identify individuals in recordings with a single speaker. Identifying speakers in recordings of natural conversations can be challenging, especially when emotional shifts can alter voice characteristics, making gender identification difficult. To address this issue, the proposed architectures include techniques for gender, emotion, and diarization at either the segment or group level. The evaluation of these architectures utilized two speech databases, namely VoxCeleb and RAVDESS (Ryerson audio-visual database of emotional speech and song) datasets. The findings reveal that the proposed approach outperforms the strategy level in terms of recognition results, despite the real-time processing advantage of the latter. The challenge of identifying multiple speakers engaging in a conversation while considering emotional changes that impact speech is effectively addressed by the proposed architectures. The data indicates that the gender and emotion classification of diarization achieves an accuracy of over 98 percent. These results suggest that the proposed speech-based approach can achieve highly accurate speaker identification
Exploring the Factors Influencing the College Students’ Engagement in Mobile Learning in Palestine
This study aims to explore the factors influencing students’ engagement in mobile learning at Palestine Technical University Kadoorie. It utilizes a mixed research approach that combines both quantitative and qualitative designs. The study sample consists of 37 college students from two different faculties: Arts and Educational Sciences, and Applied Sciences. Data were collected using a pre-existing scale for engagement and its factors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 students who completed the scales. The findings showed a statistically significant difference in the total engagement scores, specifically in the emotional engagement dimension. However, there was no statistical significance found in the social, cognitive, or behavioral domains. Factors related to instructors are influential factors in student engagement and have been found to be statistically significant. Qualitative findings supported the quantitative results for this question, which showed subthemes of instructor-related factors such as instructor presence, motivation, teaching strategies, and technical environment. Researchers recommend that policymakers and educators prioritize the engagement factors of students in mobile learning. One of the limitations is the generalizability of this study. The participants who were surveyed were exclusively sourced from two departments within one university. To broaden the scope, we suggest that future research include individuals from various disciplines, universities, academic institutions, and students
Design of a Mobile Application to Improve the Therapy Process in Children with Autism
Autism is a spectrum disorder that affects communication and social interaction. It has increased in recent decades, especially among children, and has had a significant impact on their lives, necessitating attention and appropriate support. A prototype mobile application was developed using the Scrum methodology, which allows for flexibility, adaptability, incremental delivery, and quality, as well as continuous improvement. The result obtained was a prototype with a design and features that facilitate patient and specialist access to healthcare areas. The quality of the prototype was evaluated by experts, who assessed its efficiency, usability, design, and functionality and obtained an average score of 4.61. This indicates that, according to the established quality range, it is high. In conclusion, the prototype enhances the therapeutic process for children with autism. It is efficient, easy to use, and has good functionality and an attractive design. This provides a solution that facilitates patients’ access to health services for their well-being
A ROS-Based Open Tool for Controlling an Educational Mobile Robot
Commercial educational robots provide an accessible entry point into the world of robotics. However, their programming is often limited to specific platforms, which can make it challenging to acquire the skills necessary for industry and research. In this study, we introduce an open-access tool developed using C++ and Arduino IDE that enables us to manage a commercial mobile robot through the Robot Operating System (ROS) middleware. This provides programmers with the ability to work in a powerful programming environment, such as Python. The robot used is the CrowBot BOLT, a kit based on ESP32 that enables wireless communication and includes various peripherals for application development. The mobile robot topics include robot velocities, RGB LEDs, a buzzer, a programmable button, and proximity, light, and line sensors. The proposal is assessed using two controllers: one for proximity and the other for tracking angular light. Both controllers are developed using Visual Studio Code. The experimental results demonstrated the proper functioning of the tool. Additionally, the response time was evaluated, and it was found that optimal performance is achieved at a frequency of 10 Hz. In summary, this proposal provides an accessible option for students and developers seeking to gain skills in robotics using ROS. Perception of Engineering Students on Social Constructivist Learning Approach in Classroom
The social constructivist approach to teaching and learning has garnered significant interest among educators and researchers. However, further investigation into its implementation and effectiveness in the classroom is still needed. This study aims to investigate engineering students’ perceptions of social constructivist practices in their technology classes, using the constructivist learning environment survey (CLES) as its framework. A mixed-methods approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods was used, which included online surveys and semi-structured interviews. Analysis of data from 300 responses showed that constructivism was partially implemented in the classroom. Specifically, student negotiation emerged as the most frequently perceived dimension, while shared control was perceived as seldom occurring. Most items on the personal relevance scale were frequently perceived, highlighting the importance of integrating technology learning into students’ daily lives. Similarly, the uncertainty of technology was found to be a common experience for students. In contrast, the dimension of critical voice received mixed results, emphasizing the necessity of a learning environment that fosters student expression and meaningful discussions. These findings suggest the necessity for additional investigation and integration of social constructivist practices that emphasize the enhancement of student engagement, promotion of critical thinking, and redistribution of power within the classroom setting
Teachers Motivating Themselves by Motivating Students: A Cryptocurrency Appears
The attitude of teachers has a powerful influence on whether or not they will adopt a new technology. How much that technology helps the teacher do their job is a key determinant of their attitude. Exploratory research was done to discover the preferences of university lecturers for a novel cryptocurrency token (NCCT) which focuses on education and is intended to increase student motivation. Working in both public and private universities in Vietnam, responding teachers participated in unstructured interviews, then in structured interviews with open responses, and finally in structured interviews with closed response options. Responses show that 57% of university lecturers in Vietnam are either interested or very interested in being able to utilize this NCCT to motivate their students to change behavior. The top behaviors that educators wish to change include doing homework, preparing before class, and asking and answering questions during class time. This focus on in-class behavior could be intended to improve the sense of agency felt by students. In a previous study, students reported they would change their behavior in order to receive these NCCTs so there is reason to believe the teachers’ efforts would be successful if they had access to an NCCT like the one described herein
An Educational Inclusion Model for Adults with Diverse Neuromuscular Conditions through the use of an Artificial Intelligence Algorithm
An estimated 790 million individuals globally are afflicted with at least one form of disability. Among this population, 79 million are afflicted with diverse neuromuscular disorders. The educational inclusion of these people is complicated by the loss of the ability to communicate and breathe, difficulty walking, dressing, and/or eating without the assistance of another person. Several studies have demonstrated that assistive tools can function as a means of providing support. However, the feasibility of obtaining these instruments is hindered by limited supply, exorbitant prices, intricate operation, and substantial maintenance requirements. As a result, they are promptly abandoned following their acquisition. In contrast, artificial intelligence algorithms are of paramount importance as they enable the execution of computational processes that acquire knowledge from data, thereby enabling progressive performance enhancements deprived of explicit human intervention. The current study is aimed to tackle the obstacle of ensuring that this population has access to education by developing a mobile application that utilizes an eye-tracking algorithm to gather fixation data from individuals afflicted with this condition. This enabled the development of an innovative and personalized learning environment, which yielded outcomes including enhanced usability, accessibility, autonomy, time management, and physical barrier elimination
Fear of Disconnection: Analysis of Nomophobia among Undergraduate Students according to their Educational Program and Gender
In our ever more technologically interconnected and globalized society, nomophobia, or the apprehension of lacking a mobile device, has emerged as a significant concern. This research centered on undergraduate students, a demography particularly immersed in technology, with the aim of assessing the prevalence of nomophobia and its correlation with gender and the academic program pursued by the students. The participants were 320 undergraduate students from four distinct academic programs—Administration (A), foreign trade (FT), public accounting (PA), and information technology (IT). Each program was represented by eighty students, with an equal gender distribution of forty men and forty women. A Spanish version of the NMP-Q questionnaire was utilized to assess nomophobia. A two-way factorial balanced design was used to determine the effect of educational program and gender on the nomophobia levels of university students. A two-way ANOVA test was conducted. The statistical approach helped identify significant impacts related to the academic program (p = .003), gender (p = .001), and the interaction of both factors (p = .064). Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed: Academic program-specific support initiatives, gender-sensitive interventions, awareness campaigns and workshops to educate students about nomophobia, continuous well-being monitoring and feedback, training and resilience building. These programs should be available to all students, with an emphasis on high-risk populations
