Tempel Anneke’s Confessions: Four Phases of Faith

    Get PDF
The Trial of Tempel Anneke offers a unique insight into the mindset and perspectives of women living in late seventeenth-century Germany. This paper will focus on understanding the religious elements of Tempel Anneke’s confession, in an attempt to understand how her religious beliefs changed over the course of her trial. To complete this analysis, Tempel Anneke’s interrogations will be studied in detail for her references to God, Jesus, and the sacraments. This paper will argue that Tempel Anneke’s faith went through four distinct phases over the course of her trial due to the pressures she was experiencing from the magistrates and court officers

The Way of the Warrior in Interwar Japan

    Get PDF
In the 1860s, Japan was pulled out of its centuries-long isolation and forced to rapidly adapt to the industrialized world. The state quickly made friends with the more established Western powers and was able to impress them with its surprising miliary victories over China in 1895, Russia in 1905, and Germany in 1919. However, the goodwill that Japan had garnered with the West evaporated after the First World War. How could a nation so adept at modern militarism and economics alienate every friend it had in the span of 25 years? The answer stems from Japan\u27s long feudal age; in the twentieth century, Japan was unable to reconcile feudal concepts of Bushidō and Shinto with emerging Wilsonian idealism, leading to a fundamental disconnect that drove the Japanese down the path to confrontation with the nations that had ushered it into the modern era

Vietnamese Boat People: The Stories of Vietnamese Refugees and their Journey in Seeking Asylum in Canada during the Late 1970s to the 1980s

    Get PDF
In the years following the Vietnam War in 1975 and the especially during the year leading up to the Sino-Vietnamese War in 1978, more than one million people were forced to flee the war-torn countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos.  The Vietnamese people who were displaced from their homes were placed in refugee camps all over south eastern Asia. These Vietnamese refugees were known as the “boat people".This essay will explore the lives of these "boat people" during their times as a displaced person and their journey to Canada.  It will also examine the policies and programs that made it possible for the "boat people" to resettle in Canada, along with the public opinion surrounding these refugees. This will be done through the use of a variety of secondary and primary sources such as monographs, journal articles, news articles, government documents, interviews, and other sources.  One source in particular is an interview of a Vietnamese family and their journey as Vietnamese refugees to becoming Canadian citizens

The Unfortunate Elite: Southern Women and Their Accounts of Sherman’s Army

    Get PDF
This essay considers the actions of Union soldiers during their March to the Sea and through the Carolinas under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman. It does so this through the lens of personal diaries kept by southern women who experienced the March first or second-hand. This essay argues that the elite women of the south did not experience conditions as harsh as they described, and that their accounts amount to a misrepresentation of the experiences of most southerners during the March

La pratique du surtitrage en contexte minoritaire

    Get PDF

    Dyslexia and digital technology

    Get PDF
This research manuscript investigates how technology can be used to help students with dyslexia. Using a Google Forms survey and an interview with an expert on the topic, different types of technologies, the pros and cons of using assistive technology, and recommendations for implementing assistive technology in the classroom are listed.  It was found that assistive technology is beneficial for students with dyslexia, but each student will benefit from different technologies. The main challenges with assistive technology that this research project uncovered included, glitches, not being user friendly, and the cost of some of these technologies. These problems apply mainly to higher tech assistive technologies, so including low tech assistive technologies in the classroom as well as high tech options could benefit students and avoid some of these challenges. Understanding some of the different assistive technologies that are available and beneficial for students with dyslexia is important for those involved in the education system so that we can give students with dyslexia the tools that they need to succeed. When educators know about, understand how to use, and have the resources to acquire assistive technologies then technology can be used to help students with dyslexia

    Defeating the digital divide

    Get PDF
In my personal experience I witnessed a discrepancy between what was available to schools and students from high and low socioeconomic areas. This made me wonder about their access to digital technologies, specifically how the digital divide affects education and how I can help as an educator. Using information from background research, an anonymous survey completed by my peers and current teachers, and an interview with an expert, I was able to conclude that digital technologies are an effective educational tool used to enrich students’ learning experiences. This can be achieved using a variety of different strategies and tools, including Smart technology, tablets, video blogs, and experiments. Educators should participate in professional development opportunities to help lessen the digital divide. This in-depth knowledge will give them the skills to effectively use digital technologies in their classrooms. Schools can also ensure students have access to technology to balance any lack of access at home

Comparison of Film Language and Historical Fact

    Get PDF
Film language is an important aspect of analyzing film. Film language is the term used to break down the aspects of movies to develop the deeper meanings being communicated to the audience. The following essay studies three areas of film language in these historical movies: 12 Years a Slave, Nanking, and Frida. These three films will be examined through their use of dialogue, cinematography, and metaphor in the characters\u27 actions. The essay compares the similarities and differences in the three films and offers a deep analysis of each film individually. Furthermore, a historical understanding is developed from the messages conveyed in the films. It is concluded that the movies share a similarity in their use of dialogue to convey character development. However, the difference in the three films is portrayed in their use of metaphor in the characters\u27 actions to communicate various messages to the viewers. Through the study of the three historical films, we develop a greater understanding of the historical messages they express and a deep appreciation of the intricacy of the film industry

A Brief Review of Cognitive Theories in Gender Development

    Get PDF
In this paper I review three cognitive theories that attempt to explain the mechanisms and processes through which we develop an understanding of gender. Cognitive-developmental theory, gender schema theory, and social cognitive theory of gender development and differentiation are compared in this article through the exploration of empirical evidence. Cognitive-developmental theory emphasizes the development of cognitive processes which allow for the understanding of gender. Gender schema theory highlights the active role schemas play in acquiring and interpreting gender relevant information, and social-cognitive theory stresses the role of the environment. I found that there is a considerable amount of overlap with the evidence between each theory. Therefore, rather than each theory existing in opposition to one another, there are multiple relevant factors at play concerning both cognition and the social environment in the development of gender. Thus, the main conclusion is that there is a need for greater theoretical integration with regard to understanding gendered development
