    No full text

The purpose of this systematic review was two-fold: 1) to know the scientific evidence of hamstring muscles TMG parameters in professional football players during the competitive season, and 2) to establish the most-frequent values for the main TMG parameters in soccer players compared with the reference values of the TMG software. PRISMA guidelines were followed, and a systematic search was performed in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Sport Discus electronic databases with no date restrictions until November 2023. The studies considered for this meta-analysis were studies investigating professional soccer players between 20- and 29-years measured during the competitive season and reported tensiomyography-derived parameters such as contraction time and/or maximal displacement, and/or delay time, of the hamstring muscles (biceps femoris and semitendinosus). A total of 139 studies were identified and 12 studies were included in the systematic review and for the meta-analysis. All studies underwent a quality assessment using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale, and the NOS score varied from 7/9 to 8/9 in all studies, suggesting a good quality of all articles. Study results were analyzed using restricted maximum-likelihood and random-effects models. The main findings of the study are that of the six parameters analysed, three variables were found to differ significantly. Furthermore, the weighted mean values founded were biceps femoris (Tc 27.88, Dm 5.2, Td 23.72) and in semitendinosus (Dm 8.72, Td 25.25). TMG can serve as a valuable device for assessing neuromuscular function in soccer players. Furthermore, shows the most-frequent values of the biceps femoris and the semitendinosus, where different values in the TMG parameters can be observed between the synergistic muscles.Peer reviewe

Persistence in China’s household consumption level : implications for the new growth model

Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.In this paper, we investigate the statistical features of China’s household consumption level by calculating its degree of persistence and testing for the existence of trends in the data. Further, we contrast the results obtained in China with those corresponding to the G7 economies and in the other three countries that make up the fastest developing BRICs group, that is, Brazil, Russia and India. Our results show large degrees of heterogeneity depending on the country and the model used for the analysis though, in general, lower degrees of dependence and thus, more evidence of transitory shocks is observed in China and the rest of BRIC economies than in the G7 countries.Peer reviewe

Modulatory Action of Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-I) on Cortical Activity : Entrainment of Metabolic and Brain Functions

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors.Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) is a neurotrophic factor that regulates neurogenesis, synaptogenesis, and neuronal survival. It also enhances neuronal activity and facilitates synaptic plasticity. Additionally, IGF-I plays a critical role in the regulation of metabolism in mammals. Emerging evidence indicates that IGF-I modulates sleep architecture. The circadian integration of metabolic and neuronal systems serves to optimize energy utilization across the light/dark cycle. Current data suggest that IGF-I may be a key mediator of this integration, promoting brain activity during wakefulness, a state that coincides with increased metabolic demand. In this review, we summarize recent findings on the interplay between metabolism, IGF-I, and brain activity.Peer reviewe

    A perspective on Trans-speciesism through Enoch, a Character in Flannery O’Connor's Novel «Wise Blood»

Publisher Copyright: © PENSAMIENTO,This study analyses trans-speciesism. It has been defined, shown its origin and evolution, listed its main features and objectives. It is identified as a phenomenon in connection with transhumanism/post-humanism. After presenting the state of the question, a study of people who claim to be trans-species is proposed in the light of Enoch, a character in Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood. With this dialogue between trans-speciesism and the Anthropology that underlies the novel, a possible connection is made between Enoch's quest and the longings that can motivate identity changes in trans-species people.Peer reviewe

Cariprazine as a maintenance treatment in dual schizophrenia : A 6-month observational study in patients with schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 The Author(s).Schizophrenia is often associated with substance use disorders, particularly cannabis use disorder (CUD). However, treatments frequently fail to address both conditions simultaneously. This study aimed to evaluate the antipsychotic effectiveness of cariprazine in patients with both schizophrenia and CUD in a real-world setting. A 6-month observational study was conducted on 58 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and CUD, treated with cariprazine. Antipsychotic effectiveness was measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale and the Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia Scale, along with the Improvement and Severity scales. Cannabis consumption and addiction severity were assessed using the Cannabis Abuse Screening Test and the Severity of Dependence Scale, while functioning was evaluated with the Sheehan Disability Inventory. Cariprazine treatment resulted in significant improvements in schizophrenia symptoms (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale change: -47.88 points, P<0.0001; Clinical Global Impression-Schizophrenia Scale change: -8.26 points, P<0.0001). Cannabis use and dependence also decreased (Cannabis Abuse Screening Test change: -7.0 points, P<0.0001; Severity of Dependence Scale change: -7.88 points, P<0.0001), alongside improvements in functioning (Sheehan Disability Inventory change: -9.48 points, P<0.0001). These results suggest that cariprazine is effective for both schizophrenia and CUD, though further research is needed to confirm these findings.Peer reviewe

Colorectal Disease published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd on behalf of Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.Introduction: Benchmarking colorectal surgery outcomes informs quality improvement. The ESCP CORREA 2022 snapshot audit aimed to assess contemporary colorectal resection practices and short-term outcomes across European countries and beyond. Methods: An international prospective multicentre audit was conducted in which adults undergoing elective or emergency colorectal resection during a 6-week period (January–April 2022) at participating hospitals were included. Data on patient demographics, indications, surgical approach (open, laparoscopic or robotic) and 30-day postoperative outcomes (complications, reoperation and mortality) were collected for analysis. The outcomes were analysed and compared with those of previous audits to identify trends in colorectal surgery. Results: The study enrolled 3521 patients (56.8% men) from 216 hospitals across 53 countries. In 72.2% of the cases, the indication for resection was malignancy, followed by diverticular disease in 9.0%, Crohn's disease in 3.7% and ulcerative colitis in 2.3% of the cases. Of the surgeries, 74.4% were elective. Minimally invasive surgery was performed in 55.2% of the cases (48.7% laparoscopic and 6.5% robotic). Primary anastomosis was performed in 90.3% of the patients. The 30-day anastomotic leak rate was 7.96%; in malignant and benign diseases, the leak rates were 7.3% and 10.2%, respectively. The leak rates for right, left, anterior rectal resection, pouch and subtotal colectomy were 6.9%, 7.7%, 9.7%, 16.0% and 11.8%, respectively. In the multivariable analysis, the risk factors for leakage included male sex (9.3% vs. 6.3%, OR = 0.69, 95% CI 0.51–0.95, p = 0.023) and emergency surgery (11.4% vs. 7.1%, OR = 1.58, 95% CI 1.10–2.27, p = 0.013). Thirty-day mortality was 2.38%. Conclusions: This large international audit provides the status of the management of colorectal surgery. This shows that minimally invasive techniques are widely adopted, and 30-day mortality is low; however, anastomotic leak rates remain persistently high. These findings highlight the ongoing need for targeted research and quality-improvement initiatives to reduce anastomotic failure and improve outcomes of colorectal surgery.Peer reviewe

Myth in Shadow of the Colossus according to the mimetic theory of René Girard

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Author(s). Published by Intellect Ltd.This article proposes to incorporate René Girard’s mimetic theory into the study of ludomythology using the game Shadow of the Colossus (Team ICO 2005) as a case study, comparing the existing analyses of the game with the results of this new approach. Textual analyses argue that the game portrays a tragic world and that the actions of the player character are morally negative. Our approach suggests that this perspective corresponds to the foundational myth created by the persecutors of scapegoats, an accusatory narrative that legitimizes the sacrifice of victims. Girardian hermeneutics, supported by methods of video game narratology, reveals this rhetorical mechanism while also suggesting that, within the game’s world, the victims are innocent and its protagonist is a hero seeking to abolish the legitimizing foundations of violence which are inherent in the sacrificial society to which he belongs.Peer reviewe

Novel Biomarkers for SARS-CoV-2 Infection : A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors. Background: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has posed significant challenge to global healthcare systems, necessitating reliable biomarkers to predict disease severity and mortality. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the prognostic value of novel biomarkers in COVID-19 patients. The aim of this study was to identify and prioritize the most prognostically relevant novel biomarkers associated with COVID-19 outcomes. Methods: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence. A systematic search of PubMed and Web of Science was performed to identify studies on the COVID-19 biomarkers. Observational studies that compared poor (severe disease/mortality) and good outcomes were included. For continuous measures, standard mean differences (SMDs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), and summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve analyses for the biomarkers were used. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle–Ottawa scale. Results: Of the 2907 screened studies, 38 were included (21 in the meta-analysis). MR-proADM showed higher levels of prediction for poor outcomes (SMD = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.11–1.69; AUC 0.74–0.96; sensitivity, 85%; specificity, 71%). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) showed a high correlation with disease severity (SMD = 1.07, 95% CI: 0.79–1.35; AUC 0.73–0.98; sensitivity, 86%; specificity, 78%). Increased KL-6 levels were associated with lung injury (SMD = 1.22, 95% CI: 0.24–2.19; AUC 0.85–0.95). Other biomarkers (suPAR, miR-155, Galectin-3) showed promise but lacked sufficient data for pooled analysis. Heterogeneity was observed among the included studies in terms of diagnostic accuracy. These findings indicate that elevated levels of MR-proADM, NLR, and KL-6 are significantly associated with COVID-19 prognostic accuracy to guide patient management. Conclusions: MR-proADM, NLR, and KL-6 levels demonstrated strong prognostic value for COVID-19 severity and mortality. These biomarkers can enhance clinical decision-making.Peer reviewe
