    The virtue and values education centre. Establishing a research and transference centre for virtue and character education in Spain

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Amid the renewed international interest in values and moral education, virtue and character education are increasingly recognized as key approaches to fostering human flourishing. This paper examines the development and work of the Centro de Educación en Virtudes y Valores (CEV), a research and transfer centre for character education in Spain. While such centres have grown globally, this study asks: What are the key features of a research and transfer centre designed to promote character and virtue education across educational contexts, such as culturally specific environments like Spain. The study uses a descriptive and exploratory case study approach. Data were collected using a mixed-methods design, including surveys, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of internal reports and programme evaluations. These methods enabled a triangulated understanding of the CEV’s educational philosophy, programme implementation, and institutional impact. The first section explores the centre’s anthropological foundations, educational rationale, and programme design. The second outlines the CEV’s transfer efforts in universities and schools, including diagnostic tools and teacher training programmes. Findings suggest that the CEV distinguishes itself through its neo-Aristotelian and Thomistic anthropological framework, emphasis on teacher flourishing and accompaniment, and its culturally adapted virtue taxonomy. Evaluations of its programmes show high satisfaction and impact among participants, reinforcing the value of sustained, relational, and context-sensitive character education. The paper concludes by identifying future lines of research, such as comparative studies with other character education research centres and the long-term impact of teacher formation on educational communities.Peer reviewe

    European CO2 emissions persistence Analysis. A comparative IPCC contributor study with fractional integration

    Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Authors.This paper investigates the persistence of CO2 emissions in the largest European economies (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands) from 1970 to 2023 by using a fractional integration framework. With this purpose, we contribute to the existing literature by investigating two research questions. First, to assess persistence in the specific subsectors, organized by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) standard categories; and second, to study their cross-country and cross-sectoral long-term and short-term relationships. The main findings suggest clear evidence of persistent patterns in emissions and their associated components, with a significant negative trend in all cases except France. Regarding the relationship between crossed components, we find evidence that transportation and industry demonstrate a high degree of correlation, yet no evidence of cointegration is observed. Conversely, waste shows a high level of cointegration across countries but no correlation. We find different patterns for the remaining components, with no discernible relationship observed across sectors within a single country or across different countries for the same sector. These findings suggest that despite the EU's substantial commitment to reducing carbon emissions, there appears to be no coordinated strategy across the different countries to fully implement these policies.Peer reviewe

    Novel Real-Time Acoustic Power Estimation for Dynamic Thermoacoustic Control

    Publisher Copyright: © 2025 by the authors.This paper presents a new procedure for the real-time processing and analysis of data from thermoacoustic systems. The approach focuses on continuously acquiring and adjusting measurements of acoustic wave pressure, enabling the instantaneous estimation of acoustic power. This is crucial for real-time control and decision-making, especially in applications that require rapid power estimation, such as the control loop implementation in thermoacoustic engines, where conditions are constantly changing and dynamic adaptation is essential. Two methods for estimating the power delivered to the load are proposed: (method 1) instantaneous power evaluation, which calculates the power consumed by the resistance in the resistance–capacitance (RC) load, and (method 2) one-period average power calculation using the well-established two-microphones method. These methods are validated with both different synthetic signals and experimental measurements. The results reveal that the new method provides real-time accurate estimations of the power delivered to the acoustic load and, thus, has shown potential for control-based applications.Peer reviewe

    Model-free and model-based connectedness in highly, medium and lowly correlated financial returns : analyses of OECD inflations

    Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2024.This paper deals with the analysis of inflation in financial returns by using model-free connectedness framework which includes investigating persistence in the series and data from 22 countries from April 1958 to November 2023 which are grouped into highly, medium and lowly correlated returns. The results indicate that 10 countries, among the members of G12 are listed among highly-medium correlated inflation returns. The G7 countries are listed with high-medium inflation returns, of which France, Germany, Italy, and the USA are net shock transmitters, while Canada, Japan and the UK are net shock receivers. Total connectedness indices are positively related to the correlations, and the connectedness is found to increase astronomically towards late 2020 due to economic and financial market integration. Global financial crisis such as that of 2007–2009 and the COVID-19 pandemic have reset the integration of economic variables again. A policy recommendation is therefore given at the end.Peer reviewe

All rights reserved.Orienteering is a booming sport within the physical activities in the natural environment and is included in the curriculum of Physical Education (PE). It is an excellent activity from a didactic point of view because it does not need to be competitive, it is challenging, cooperative, inclusive, accessible, and there is a possibility of success for all participants. Although orienteering is the most taught content within these activities, teachers identify barriers that make it difficult to carry it out or improve its practice. This study analyzed the GPS Orienteering app, whose main feature is that there is no need to place physical flags or QR codes. A total of 85 students of the degree in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, in the subject related to physical activities in the natural environment, experienced a learning progression of orienteering, including the use of this app, of which their perceptions and use were explored. In conclusion, the app is user-friendly and practical, efficiently organizing a race and generating valuable data without requiring flags or QR codes.Peer reviewe

    Colorectal and emergency surgical patients in the literature supporting EHS and AHS guidelines on abdominal wound closure : a granular analysis

    Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.Background: To critically appraise the evidence supporting the European and American Hernia Society (EHS/AHS) guidelines on abdominal wall closure in colorectal and emergency surgery patients, we conducted a granular analysis focused on the representation and quality of available data. Methods: References that addressed key questions (KQ) and recommendations in the original guidelines were screened and included if colorectal/emergency surgery was reported. Data extraction was performed with a standardised form and authors were contacted for missing data. Quality and risk of bias were assessed independently by two reviewers. Results: Out of 33 studies included: 15 systematic reviews and one literature review were rated low or critically low (AMSTAR 2); 12 randomised controlled trials had moderate to high risk of bias (Cochrane RoB-2 tool); five observational studies were of low to very low quality (GRADE) with serious risk of bias (ROBINS-I). 32 studies included colorectal (n = 15,856) and 14 emergency patients (n = 4,582). To answer KQ1 on ‘minimally invasive or open surgery’ and ‘type of incision’ 9/10 studies included colorectal and no studies included emergency patients. 1/4 and 8/9 studies included colorectal/emergency patients for recommendations regarding trocar sites closure (KQ2) and closure after laparotomy (KQ3). Regarding the use of mesh (KQ5), 11/11 studies included colorectal/emergency patients. 3/3 and 1 studies included colorectal patients for KQ6 (abdominal binders) and one for KQ7 (restriction of activity), but none included emergency patients. Conclusion: Recommendations for KQs 1, 3, 5, 6, and 7 appear applicable to colorectal patients, whereas evidence for KQ2 remains insufficient. For emergency patients, recommendations related to KQs 1, 2, 6, and 7 should not be extrapolated. This study further highlights critical limitations in the evidence base, including the lack of patient-centred outcomes, and underscores the need for targeted, high-quality research in these populations.Peer reviewe

    Effect of red meat consumption on cardiovascular risk factors : A systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

The aim of this systematic review and Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) was to investigate the effects of red meat consumption on cardiovascular risk factors concerning different comparison foods. Methods: A systematic search of RCTs was conducted from the inception to April 2024. Studies compared diets containing red meat to those replacing red meat with various foods. Comparison diets were classified into high-quality plant protein sources, animal protein, mixed animal and plant protein and carbohydrates. The effects of the dietary interventions on cardiovascular parameters were evaluated using a random-effects NMA, with an analysis of interactions between the intervention and control groups. The outcomes were the mean changes in blood lipids, blood pressure, and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the red meat group compared to the comparator group. Results: Thirty-six RCTs were included in the analysis. Consuming plant proteins resulted in a greater reduction in total cholesterol (TC) levels (mean difference (MD) = −0.14; 95 % credible interval (CrI): −0.28 to −0.001, p < 0.05) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (MD = −0.19; 95 % CrI: −0.36 to −0.03, p < 0.05) compared to red meat interventions. In contrast, interventions combining animal and plant proteins increased TG levels more than red meat interventions (MD = 0.21; 95 % CrI: 0.06 to 0.34, p < 0.05). The certainty of the evidence for all outcomes ranged from very low to low. Conclusion: The findings of this NMA indicate that the effect of red meat on cardiovascular risk factors depends on the comparison food. Replacing red meat with plant protein sources was associated with favorable changes in TC levels and LDL-C.     Characteristics and outcomes of acute pulmonary embolism among patients with polyvascular, single-vascular or no atherosclerotic disease : insights from RIETE

    Publisher Copyright: © The Author(s) 2025.Background: The role of atherosclerosis in pulmonary embolism (PE) prognosis remains uncertain. Our study assesses characteristics and outcomes of acute PE patients according to the presence and extent of atherosclerotic disease. Methods: Using data from the RIETE registry, acute PE patients were classified into three groups based on personal history: (1) polyvascular atherosclerosis, (2) single vascular atherosclerosis, and (3) no symptomatic atherosclerosis. Primary outcomes included recurrent PE and venous thromboembolism (VTE), arterial events, major bleeding, and all-cause death. Hazard ratios (HR) and Kaplan–Meier curves for clinical outcomes were estimated using Cox regression models. Results: Among 47,578 acute PE patients, 1,040 had polyvascular, 6,191 single-vascular, and 40,347 no atherosclerosis. During a median follow-up of 331 days, Adverse outcomes were more frequent in patients with atherosclerosis (vs. no atherosclerosis), rising with the number of affected vascular territories. Recurrent PE rates were 2.8, 1.6, and 1.2 per 100 patient-years in the polyvascular, single-vascular, and no atherosclerosis groups. Multivariable analysis showed a dose-dependent relationship between atherosclerosis and recurrent PE risk, with HRs of 3.2 (95% CI 1.7–5.9) and 1.6 (95% CI 1.1–2.3) for polyvascular and single-vascular disease (vs. no atherosclerosis). The risk of all-cause death followed a similar trend, with HRs of 1.3 (95% CI 1.1–1.6) and 1.2 (95% CI 1.1–1.4), respectively. Major bleeding appeared to be influenced by overall health status and antithrombotic therapy intensity.Peer reviewe
