    Get PDF
It is undeniable that English exerts a powerful influence on other modern languages. There are plenty of published studies dealing with different kinds of loanwords from English; both in technical and specialised fields, as well as in common and intimate ones. This paper focuses on the scope of cinema, as the filmic medium is a strong bearer of Anglosaxon cultural references and stereotypes, American ones in particular. After having analysed a corpus of film reviews, a collection of anglicisms used in Spanish with no assimilation of any kind has been recorded. These words or groups of words have been classified according to the reality they describe. Conclusions drawn refer to their characteristics and diffusion in the recipient language.

Fashion Anglicisms in Modern Greek: A preliminary investigation

    Get PDF
English nowadays is the dominant language in the domain of fashion sinceEnglish and American companies lead the fashion industry worldwide. As a result, a high number of English fashion loanwords have entered the languages of the world and become part of their vocabulary. A considerable number of Anglicisms regarding fashion is attested in Modern Greek too. This work is a preliminary investigation of fashion Anglicisms in MG through their appearance in Greek online shops and social media pages of fashion stores and magazines. Our investigation shows that fashion Anglicisms in MG are present in the MG vocabulary and are used by MG speakers in their transliterated or non-transliterated forms. In particular, we examine in detail how Anglicisms exist in their non-transliterated form in the MG language system, a fact that is, among others, related to prestige perceptions of English that are dominant in Greek society

A Corpus-based Study of I am thinking in Political Speeches

    Get PDF
This paper examines the occurrence of I am thinkingin political speeches as opposed to general discourse. This combination containing a verb traditionally considered incompatible with the progressive seems to be evolving and extending its range of functions. Data drawn from a reference corpus of British English shows that I am thinkingserves a wide array of discursive functions, besides its basic propositional cogitate meaning (parenthetical, filler, narrative and interpretative). In political speeches the construction has developed an almost exclusive cohesive role, i.e. the speaker’s clarification of a previous utterance. This use, which derives from the interpretative progressive, is not available with the simple form, I think, a phrase extensively studied in the past decades as an epistemic unit with dissimilar functions in different types of discourse (Simon-Vandenbergen 2000). This analysis, furthermore, makes an important contribution to the understanding of the progressive as a marker of contingency (Goldsmith & Woisetschlaeger 1982; De Wit & Brisard 2014), highly interpretable in a situational or linguistic context

    Get PDF
This article analyzes the role of Lazarillo and the picaresque genre in giving voice and narrative presence to a kind of character unprecedented in literature and history. First, I will review some of the positions which claim the presence of the anonymous individual in public discourse, and then I will study how the revolutionary narrative structure of Lazarillo is combined with the strategy of offering the story of a subaltern who plays at controlling not only his discourse but also his actions.

Does social identity affect business performance?

    Get PDF
The business founder’s social identity is crucial to explaining his or her behaviour and attitude in business decision-making. Drawing on three types of entrepreneurial social identity identified by Fauchart and Gruber (2011), this study examines how social identities influence the entrepreneur’s way of managing his/her firm and its consequences for business performance. Based on a survey of newly created firms, the results support the conclusion that effectuation channels the effects of specific identities - Darwinian and missionary- on business performance

Borderless companies versus born globals: Why we do need another label

    Get PDF
This article is intended to show why borderless firms should be distinguished from traditional born global firms (BGs). Borderless firms have an internationally dispersed configuration of downstream, upstream and support value-added activities, an entrepreneurial team not bounded by a home base, and multinational founders, management teams and/or a multinational workforce. The concept of borderless firms emerged from analysis of empirical evidence and is intended to countervail the excessive focus of BGs literature on downstream activities. Drawing from five case studies, we found that borderless firms may be the result of ex-ante planning. However, most often, the internationally dispersed configuration of value chain activities seems to emerge from effectuation approaches, stemming from networking, including unexpected interactions, which may be envisaged as instruments to overcome constraints or to explore new business opportunities. The article shows that borderless firms present features which differentiate them from traditional BGs. Implications for entrepreneurs and researchers are provided in the concluding section

Does the availability of human and social resources condition a new technology-based venture’s performance? And the technology strategy chosen by the entrepreneur to compete in the market place? This study found out that neither one nor the other, if they are considered in isolation. Results show that the technology-based venture’s performance depends on how well the entrepreneur’s resources allow the chosen technology strategy to be executed, in other words, the fit between the resources and the strategy. The authors reach this conclusion after studying a sample of 175 Spanish new technology-based ventures

Innovation is nowadays more than a challenge, a reality that should prevail in the teaching practices of any teacher. It also maintains a direct relationship with lifelong learning and it is, therefore, one of the multiple tasks that are directly or indirectly assigned to teachers of the 21st century. In this monograph there is a total of four innovative teaching experiences which constitute a sample of other proposals framed in several universities located in different parts of Spain. On the other hand, even though these proposals are diverse, they all have common places and therefore converge under the terms that give title to this monographic section, namely: innovation, communication and teaching practices

What role does entrepreneurial motivation of founders play in the internationalisation decision of SMEs? To answer this question, we analyse a sample of 296 entrepreneurs who had founded their businesses in Brazil, and our results suggest that the individual’s opportunity motivation conditions the decision to embark on international operations in SMEs even years after of having started-up the business. These results point to the need for authorities not only encourage an increasing number of new ventures, but also the need for making efforts to generate a particular category of entrepreneurial motivation, that is, the opportunity motivation

En busca de interacciones fructíferas entre las empresas multinacionales del turismo y los gobiernos locales en África / Looking for fruitful interactions between tourism multinationals and local governments in Africa

    No full text
Studies on the internationalization of the developed-economy tourism industry towards developing economies commonly analyses the challenges that such activity entails for the parties involved –the foreign tourism business and the local community– from two distinct perspectives: (1) the specific challenges tourism MNCs face to successfully operate in an African country, and (2) the specific problems faced by local authorities and population because to Tourism MNEs activities. Being aware of the benefits of a fruitful relation between these two parties, we go beyond the isolated perspectives and try to answer the following questions: (1) what are the mechanisms available to tourism MNCs to interact with the local authorities and their possible effects? and (2) what are the key factors to successfully interact with government in Africa? We answer these question from the evidence of a case study
