The effect of electricity reliability on the sustainability of SMEs in Fako Division of Cameroon
Purpose: To investigate the effects of the reliability of electricity supply on the sustainability of SMEs in Cameroon.
Research Methodology: This study investigates the effects of the reliability of electricity supply on the sustainability of SMEs in Cameroon. The study used a quantitative approach with the philosophical underpinnings of objectivist ontology and positivist epistemology. Primary data were obtained through closed-ended questionnaires that were responded to by 54 purposively sampled participants in the Fako division. The data were analyzed by Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) using SPSS 23 and SPSS Amos 24 software.
Results: The study revealed that sporadic electricity supply interruptions, chronic electricity supply interruptions, and momentary electricity supply interruptions have no significant positive impact on the sustainability of SMEs in the Fako Division of the Southwest Region of Cameroon.
Limitations: This study had a limitation in methodology, as it used a quantitative approach only. A better understanding of this study’s phenomenon can be achieved by adopting a mixed research method, where the qualitative aspect will provide a deeper understanding of the effects of other variables that affect SME sustainability.
Contribution: Based on the results of this study, business managers will come to the understanding that the sustainability of their businesses is not dependent on the reliability of the electricity supply. This means that other variables responsible for the sustainability of businesses can be studied qualitatively

Community Support Groups and Home-Based Care among Persons Living with HIV and AIDS in Lira District, Uganda
Purpose: This study investigated the contribution of Community support groups on Home based care to Persons Living with HIV in Lira District.
Research Methodology: We adopted a cross-sectional research design among a sample of 226 respondents. Using both the Self-Administered Questionnaires and an Interview Guide.
Results: The findings suggested that Community support groups (?=4.959, SD=0.5393) help in enhancing home-based care for PLHIV in Lira District. Further, Community support groups had a significant effect on Adherence to ART (?=0.641, P<0.05), Nutrition support (?=0.581, P<0.05), and Palliative care (?=0.638, P<0.05).
Limitations: This study covered only one district in the entire Lango sub-region yet if more districts were included, possibly the outcomes would have been different.
Contribution: This study contributes empirical evidence of the association between Community support groups and home-based care to PLHIV in Lira District. Therefore, for improved home-based care for PLHIV, stakeholders are encouraged to mobilize local communities to form Community support groups so that they can be able to offer support to PLHIV.
Practical implication: The study contributes to practice since HBC CSG can be used as a tool for improving the level of palliative care among the PLHIV in the local community given that the care for PLHIV has greatly moved away from the hospital-based to home-based.
Novelty: Studies on Community support groups are still limited since much of the literature originates from other parts save for Uganda and it is worse for Lira district
Cognitive skill instruction on enhancing retention in pupils with mild intellectual disability
Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of cognitive skill instruction on pupils with mild intellectual disability retention in spelling exercises, retaining poems, and letter recognition.
Research methodology: Research questions and hypotheses were formulated as a part of the methodology. This study used a non-equivalent pre-test, post-test, experimental, and control group design. Working memory is the cognitive skill chosen by the researchers. Flash cards, 100 frequency words, and the working rating scale were used to measure working memory in order to examine the cognitive skills of retention of pupils with mild intellectual disability. The study included ten (10) pupils. While the other five pupils comprised the control group, they did not receive any intervention strategy. Five of the ten pupils were in the experimental group and received an intervention package. The instrument was reliable with a reliability index of 0.85 and was valid for its intended use in measuring the required area. Six weeks were spent on the treatment. The t-test for independent samples was used to examine the treatment results.
Results: The study's findings showed that parents had an impact on their children's cognitive development and abilities, and special educators had a significant impact on a child's ability to remain in school.
Limitations: The researchers suggest that cognitive skill instruction should be implemented in educational settings.
Contribution: This research will provide special educators, parents, and the government with information on how well cognitive skills can help students with mild intellectual disability retain information
Investment strategy on indonesia islamic stocks using Greenblatt Magic Formula
Purpose: This study analyzes the portfolio form based on the Magic Formula investment strategy introduced by Greenblatt (2006).
Research methodology: The portfolio formed is evaluated using the Sharpe, Treynor, and Jensen indices.
Results: The results show that the Magic Formula investment portfolio provides higher returns than the reference index from June 2018 to May 2021, specifically -1.45% compared to -3.26%. The performance evaluation value of the Magic Formula investment portfolio was better than that of the reference index.
Limitations: Although the Magic Formula portfolio performs well during the study period, investment portfolios can also be built and evaluated using other portfolio formulas.
Contribution: This evidence shows that the Greenblatt Magic Formula investment strategy performs well because it can provide a greater return with less risk
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) disclosure and firm value of manufacturing firms: The moderating role of profitability
Purpose: This study examines the impact of environmental, social, and governance disclosure on firm value. This study empirically examines the impact of profitability on the relationship between ESG and firm value.
Research methodology: This study uses a panel dataset of 12 industrial goods manufacturing firms listed during the 2014-2020 period. The direct effects were tested using an FEM and the Two-Stage Least Squares was used to account for the endogeneity problem.
Results: This study finds a positive effect of ESG disclosures on firm value. The coefficients of ESG in the FEM and 2SLS results were not significant. The interaction between ROA and ESG also showed higher coefficients that were not statistically significant. The empirical analysis was robust to the use of two-stage least squares regression.
Limitations: This study presents evidence from a single sector based on a prior literature review, which may affect the generalizability of the findings to other sectors.
Contribution: This work adds to the broad ESG literature and methodologically extends past results by exploring the moderating influence of profitability.
Practical implications: This study has implications for managers and firms that are increasingly desirous of improving their firm performance by presenting a positive image to their stakeholders and how this is linked to their profitability over time.
Novelty: This study adds new aspects to the broad discussion on ESG and firm value in a developing-country context, which is consistent with the view that profitable firms mainly address ESG issues in such economies
Integrating Importance-Satisfaction Model and Performance Evaluation Matrix to improve service quality
Purpose: The Taiwanese coffee market is growing every year, together with progressive changes in national habits and the concept of drinking coffee. This study examines a particular coffee studio and explores its service quality within a competitive environment as a basis for improvement.
Research methodology: The design of service elements for the questionnaire was based on the relevant literature. The study identified 19 quality attributes as survey items, all of which were then subsumed under the Importance-Satisfaction Model (I-S Model) and Performance Evaluation Matrix (PEM) for service quality.
Results: There are 8 service elements falling in “Excellent area,” 3 service elements falling in “To be improved area,” 3 service elements falling in “Surplus area,” and 6 service elements falling in “Care-free area” as shown by the results of Importance-Satisfaction Model introduction. With regard to the Performance Evaluation Matrix which are introduced later on, 2 service elements fall in “Priority improvement area,” 17 service elements fall in “Improvement area,” and 1 service element falls in “Maintenance area.”
Limitations: The results of this study are only applicable to the analysis of the coffee studio survey, and cannot be extrapolated to explain improvements in service quality across the entire coffee industry.
Contribution: It is expected that items in dire need of improvement can be confirmed by introducing a service quality model to enhance service quality, build a corporate image, and increase competitive advantage
Effect of women empowerment on women-owned business performance in Wakiso District, Uganda
Purpose: This study identified women empowerment practices and investigated the challenges to women-owned business performance in the Kyengera Town Council.
Research methodology: This study employed a descriptive survey design using a qualitative data collection approach. A sample of 57 women was selected from 67 women who owned businesses using Yamane’s formula. Data were collected through surveys and interviews, edited, cleaned, coded to develop themes, and entered into MS Excel to generate frequency tables.
Results: The results showed economic empowerment, competence development, market information sharing, and social networking as practices for women’s empowerment. Furthermore, the results reveal economic issues, law and policy, environmental issues, sociocultural issues, geopolitics, and incompetence as key challenges.
Limitations: The study was limited by financial challenges and inaccessibility to women-owned businesses on the Kyengera town council.
Contribution: This study offers a new era for research on women’s empowerment, key to addressing the existing gap in women’s contribution to women-owned business performance. Thus, based on the results, women feel assured of their role in women-owned business performance and community development in the district.
Novelty: The originality of the study was expressed in the results elicited from the participants. Such a study has never been conducted in the Kyengera Town Council; thus, the results would provide avenues for referral for future researchers. In previous studies, male businesses were at the forefront of other areas. However, women who owned businesses in the Kyengera council were considered for study
Big Data Analytics and market competitiveness of selected firms in Lagos State, Nigeria
Purpose: This study specifically evaluates the effect of Intangible Big Data Analytics Resources (IBDAR) and Tangible Big Data Analytics Resources (TBDAR) on a firm’s market competitiveness in manufacturing firms. The authors used RBV as the main theoretical framework to investigate this.
Research methodology: This study used a survey research design. The study employed a non-probability sample and a final sample of seventy-two employees selected from manufacturing firms in Lagos State, Nigeria.
Results: The hypotheses were tested using multiple linear regressions. The empirical results showed that the organizational use of TBDAR has a significant effect on Market Competitiveness (MCOM), and that the organizational use of IBDAR has a significant effect on MCOM.
Limitations: First, the sample is restricted to only the Nigerian setting; to draw broader and deeper implications, it could be useful to take diverse samples from different contexts and sectors. Second, this study does not utilize the PLS-SEM technique to model mediators and moderators.
Contribution: This study has significant policy implications for practitioners and is an original study based on primary data from Nigerian manufacturing firms
Governance challenges and resurgence of Igbo nationalism in Nigeria: Dissecting Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)
Purpose: The remote and immediate causes of the Nigerian civil war are rather deepening in the psyche of Ndi-Igbo in contemporary Nigerian politics and administration. Amidst the introduction of the Reconciliation, Reconstruction, and Rehabilitation (3Rs) policy over four (4) decades ago, the Ndi-Igbo are not just marginalized but alienated and separated from political power and its benefits in an ethnically and religiously deeply divided federation. More divesting wounds are flagrantly being inflicted upon the Igbo nation. The course pursued by secessionist Biafra between 1967-70 has continued to resonate in Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This paper thus seeks to dissect the activities of IPOB in relation to national security in Nigeria. It also attempts a polemical analysis of IPOB as a separatist movement and the implications for the integration of Ndi-Igbo into the mainstream of Nigerian power politics.
Research methodology: The paper adopts a qualitative research approach using an in-depth review of extant literature for informed comprehension of the dynamics of secession and unification in a deeply divided federal state of Nigeria. Using a theory of Secession: The Case for Political Self-Determination, the paper submits that treatments being meted out to the people of Igbo nation are compelling to separation.
Results: It surmised that Ndi-Igbo is systematically sidelined and alienated from major political positions and that the allocation of key values is skewed against the Igbo nation. It thus recommends significant devolution of powers to foster an all-inclusive and participatory governance model.
Recommendations: It also recommends the adoption and implementation of a balanced federalist accommodative principle for national cohesion, integration, and development of the Nigeria state
