Classroom English for More Effective Learning
Get PDFP(論文)The importance of English has increasingly been advocated, and yet a large number of Japanese have still difficulty in commanding the language. In an attempt to drastically reform English education in our country, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology formulated a Strategic Plan to Cultivate Japanese with English Abilities in 2003. Training junior and high school teachers over five years is one of the concrete measures. To this end, some college instructors were asked to carry out on-the-job training at a local level. I had been asked to give lectures, together with other instructors, to the English teachers in Oita prefecture. My presentation in 2007, the last year of the Strategic Plan, was on classroom English, English used in ordinary English classes, to enhance students' communicative competence. The bare facts are that the majority of English classes in Japan, irrespective of education levels, are being conducted in Japanese. The ideal situation, however, will be a case where English is actively and overwhelmingly used in class. After exemplifying part of classroom English, referring to a college textbook two of my colleagues and I published, I urged the attendees to act out their ordinary English class using English to the fullest. The participants were divided into ten groups and after some consultation, each group was to demonstrate their would-be English class where their students are also engaged in using the target language in response to the teachers. Although I gave two presentations to both junior high school teachers and high school teachers, this article is largely based on the presentation given to the high school teachers
The influence of rule amendments on water polo matches: Analysis of the approved rules in the FINA 2018 Men's World Cup
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to examine how FINA rules amendments influenced game situations in the 2018 World Cup. Eighteen provisions of the rules amendments were implemented for this World Cup, the most impactful provision being the shortening of secondary possession time after a shot or an exclusion. It was obvious that the rate of shooting during extra-man offense was lower than before the provision's implementation due to smaller times of possession – the offense receiving only 20 seconds of secondary possession time after an exclusion – in the 2018 World Cup. Other effects of these implementations concerned substitutes and how direct shots from a free throw were awarded outside ６ meters. It is necessary to apply these rules for the improvement of match quality.
In the future, it will be necessary to examine how these amendments to the rules affect water polo games through increased case analysis
Flow experience and self-esteem of female junior college students
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to investigate the flow experience and self-esteem of female junior college students. Participants were 84 female junior college students. They answered the flow activities, the Flow State Scale and the Self-Esteem Scale. As a result, students who engage in “creative activities” tend to have a more “clear goal and feedback” than students who engage in “viewing or watching activities”. And there is no relationship between the frequency of flow experiences and self-esteem

Support Activities in the Campus Counseling Room to a Male student with Schizotypal Personality Disorder
Get PDFThe aims of this study were to present the case of a male student diagnosed with a mental disorder (schizotypal personality disorder), to consider the support activities that the student counseling room should provide, and to consider support for people who are hikikomori (social withdrawal) presumably due to mental disorder. First, the student counseling room is a place to provide a support, in conjunction with the academic affairs office and the school clinic, for a student to adapt to campus life and graduate. At an educational institution, student counseling is not a place for therapeutic counseling. The first reason why is because student counseling is a practical and ad hoc activity, and the second reason why is because the working conditions are seldom adequate. In addition, counselors in student counseling rooms are required to have the skills to help clients resolve their current difficulties with campus life without investigating their mental disorders. Support for the client in the current case sought to encourage him to stop himself from being hikikomori (social withdrawal) and to be aware of his disorder. The counselor's intentional attitude throughout the session encouraged the client's willingness to live in society
