Humor Detection
Humor is a very complex characteristic concept that defines us as human beings and social entities. Humor is an essential component in personal communication. How to create a method or model to discover the structures behind humor, recognize humor and even extraction of humor remains a challenge because of its subjective nature. Humor also provides valuable information related to linguistic, psychological, neurological and sociological phenomena. However, because of its complexity, humor is still an undefined phenomenon. Because the reaction that make people laugh can hardly be generalized or formalized. For instance, cognitive aspects as well as cultural knowledge, are some of the multi-factorial variables that should be analyzed in order to understand humor\u27s properties.
Although it is impossible to understand universal humor characteristics, one can still capture the possible latent structures behind humor. In my work, I will try to uncover several latent semantic structures behind humor, in terms of meaning incongruity, ambiguity, phonetic style and personal affect. In addition to humor recognition, identifying anchors, or which words prompt humor in a sentence, is essential in understanding the phenomenon of humor in language.
Proposed technique is created using the concepts of linguistics and it has significant accuracy of over 70+% compared to 23.06% of Word Index power method
Analysis of Heteroplasmic Variants in the Cardiac Mitochondrial Genome of Individuals with Down Syndrome
Individuals with Down syndrome (DS, trisomy 21) exhibit a pro-oxidative cellular environment as well as mitochondrial dysfunction. Increased oxidative stress may damage the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The coexistence of mtDNA variants in a cell or tissue (i.e., heteroplasmy) may contribute to mitochondrial dysfunction. Given the evidence on mitochondrial dysfunction and the relatively high incidence of multiorganic disorders associated with DS, we hypothesized that cardiac tissue from subjects with DS may exhibit higher frequencies of mtDNA variants in comparison to cardiac tissue from donors without DS. This study documents the analysis of mtDNA variants in heart tissue samples from donors with (n = 12) and without DS (n = 33) using massively parallel sequencing. Contrary to the original hypothesis, the study’s findings suggest that the cardiac mitochondrial genomes from individuals with and without DS exhibit many similarities in terms of (1) total number of mtDNA variants per sample, (2) the frequency of mtDNA variants, (3) the type of mtDNA variants, and (4) the patterns of distribution of mtDNA variants. In both groups of samples, the mtDNA control region showed significantly more heteroplasmic variants in comparison to the number of variants in protein- and RNA-coding genes (P \u3c 1.00×10−4, ANOVA)
Matching Public Support for Private Product-Innovating R&D: A Theoretical Analysis
This paper develops a theoretical model of product innovation where research and development (R&D) effort by a monopolist firm is endogenous and its outcome uncertain. The government attempts to aid such efforts with a matching grant. We consider different scenarios depending on whether two parties act simultaneously, act sequentially, or take part in a dynamic cooperative game with a trigger strategy. We also consider cases (i) when the products are exported, (ii) when the firm lobbies for R&D subsidy, and (iii) when the firm is foreign owned. We characterize situations when government intervention increases the chances of product innovation and when it does not
Finding the Right Fit: A Comparison of Process Assumptions Underlying Popular Drift-Diffusion Models
Recent research makes increasing use of eye-tracking methodologies to generate and test process models. Overall, such research suggests that attention, generally indexed by fixations (gaze duration), plays a critical role in the construction of preference, although the methods employed to support this supposition differ substantially. In two studies we empirically test prototypical versions of prominent processing assumptions against one another and several base models. We find that general evidence accumulation processes provide a good fit to the data. An accumulation process that assumes leakage and temporal variability in evidence weighting (i.e. a primacy effect) fits the aggregate data, both in terms of choices and decision times, and does so across varying types of choices (e.g., charitable giving and hedonic consumption) and numbers of options well. However, when comparing models on the level of the individual, for a majority of participants simpler models capture choice data better. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are discussed
Hybrid Project Management Approach for Software Modernization
Software modernization or legacy modernization, refers to the conversion, rewriting or porting of a legacy system to a modern computer programming language, software libraries, protocols, or hardware platform. Legacy transformation aims to retain and extend the value of the legacy investment through migration to new platforms [1]. Currently, I am working as a Senior Business Analyst with Blue Cross Blue Shield, one of the largest insurance provider in the United States across the health sector. I am deployed to work on their initiative towards software modernization along the healthcare industry through their software-as-a-service (SaaS) platform – “The Healthcare Online Resources (THOR)”. This service is available to numerous providers in the healthcare vertical to leverage their current operations and comprises of multiple modules including but not limited to claim adjustments, preauthorization and group coverage status. With the ongoing centralization of resources and increased competition, most of the companies are focusing on software modernization by leveraging their current technologies and hardware platforms, to remain the trendsetters and viable in the marketplace. To enhance my efficacy and understanding of the business requirements, I would like to conduct my thesis research towards the topic of “Software Modernization”. I would be able to leverage my experience as Senior Business Analyst to understand and bridge the gap between business requirements and the supporting technology backup. Being working in a multinational company, with multiple cross-functional teams, I plan to include different research results through self-surfing and interaction with these team members. Additionally, I had like to conduct surveys across these cross-functional teams mainly business and technical teams to understand and document their challenges and experience. Therefore, I strongly feel that I would be able to justify the thesis and the corresponding research
ERP Critical Success Factors: Importance of ERP Consultants in ERP Implementation
Enterprise Resource Planning, ERP is one of the most popular and successful information technology solution used in many organizations to share information within different business units to enhance and maximize productivity. The system is expensive, time-consuming, and complicated to implement and manage. The difficulties of ERP implementation have resulted in high rates of unsuccessful ERP implementation according to the stories of many organizations that have implemented the solution. The failure of ERP implementation has then led to several studies to investigate the Critical Success Factors (CSFs) that could influence the ERP implementation during and after implementation phases. Some of the factors identified in most studies are; lack of organization’s top management support, clear project definition, ineffective user training, lack of qualified project team, lack of effective communication, incomprehensive business plan/ unclear vision, lack of detailed project planning, and lack of effective change management process. However, very few has considered the role of consultant in ERP success. Hence, this study would analyze the importance of consultant as CSF in ERP implementation
Hybrid Agile Approach: Efficiently Blending Traditional and Agile Methodologies
Agile development, in its simplest form, offers a lightweight framework for helping teams, given a constantly evolving functional and technical landscape, maintain a focus on the rapid delivery of business value. Traditional project management focuses more on distinct and predefined sequential phases. It assumes that once requirements are fixed there won’t be any changes or additions in future. In today’s world however this is not true and development teams have to incorporate changes at later stages to be competitive. This is where agile methodologies have an edge over traditional methods. Agile can handle more complex and highly adaptable projects. However, organizations focusing heavily on traditional methodologies like waterfall may find completely switching to agile potentially risky. Agile methods may have these major potential risks like agile methods are easy to misunderstand, highly visible information can be threat to financially sensitive projects. Therefore, many companies fear the adoption of Agile because an enterprise-wide adoption of the methodology will conflict with the traditional Waterfall process and create conflict. Hybrid Agile approach will help the organizations transition to agile efficiently. This paper will focus on the analyzing the successful combination of agile and traditional methodology
To Overcome Communication Challenges in Distributed/Virtual Scrum Teams
The purpose of this research is to give an overview of a scrum in distributed teams and to suggest ways overcome communication challenges in such projects. In this research proposal, the latest available research on a scrum in distributed teams will be thoroughly analyzed and evaluated to know the possible solutions for communication problems in distributed teams. A review of the literature suggested scrum is widely accepted agile methodology in software projects and also it works best within collocated teams. However, the literature review also proposes that lack of proper communication is one of the main challenge faced by distributed scrum teams which needs more research. Effective communication among teams is fundamental to the agile approach in which proper and continuous feedback are absolutely necessary to improve team productivity and software quality. It is important to have right communication tool, trust among team members, organized daily scrum meetings, proper coordination, less time zone difference between locations and no language barrier to have effective communication within virtual scrum teams. Due to progression in technology scrum projects are going distributed as there are many benefits to the organizations. A brief literature review will be conducted to study the research problem which will provide valuable solutions to the communication issues in distributed teams. This research paper will be very useful to other researchers to solve the other challenges of a scrum in distributed projects
Scrum Sim - A Simulation Game to Learn the Scrum Agile Framework
In recent times, organizations have been attempting to shift from Traditional project management methodologies such as waterfall model to incorporate agile methodologies such as scrum for their project development. The main features of these agile methods include incremental and iterative delivery that allows inclusion of the requirement changes at any stage of the project lifecycle and the most commonly used agile method is scrum. As are result of wide usage of agile mythology in the IT industry, scrum framework is now being taught in various software engineering and project management courses. Even though scrum has been introduced in various academic courses, the constraints of time, scope and facilities restrict students from getting hands on experience on real world scenarios. Many employers believe that students graduating of the universities lack the desired skills and practical experience to adopt and implement agile method like scrum. Researchers have suggested that use of simulations or games if used in complement to the traditional class room setting can enhance students learning. During our previous research on the existing software educational games, it was found that there is availability of many games and simulations based on traditional software methodologies i.e. sequential software process but a lesser number of games or simulations are available on agile methodology especially based on scrum. Also the scrum games that are available are mainly card games, board games or toy games such as “Lego Bricks” which have their own limitations. To address this problem, we have developed Scrum Sim a computer based game that simulates scrum process for a software development project. It provides a glimpse of the scrum lifecycle and represents various aspects of scrum framework in a team for a software development project. We present the game, its rules, game play and discuss its validation or evaluation results
