The Communication Center as a Transcendent Physical and Virtual Space
Get PDFPractical solutions are needed to ensure that communication centers remain viable resources for the 21st century student (Nair, 2011). In order to preserve the communication center’s status as a necessary campus space, and to increase its influen ce beyond a single physical location, technology must be employed as a means to enhance student communication skills. This paper proposes utilizing virtual reality, augmented reality, and wearable technology as solutions to common concerns facing communica tion centers as they seek to increase the public speaking and general multimodal communication skills of students. To guide the potential usage of the aforementioned technologies, and as a lens through which their effects can be better understood, cognitiv e theory of multimedia learning and digital literacy are applied here.
“I don’t want to be imported or exported”: Critical pedagogy and the English writing and research course in the UAE
Get PDFFreire developed his theory and practice in community literacy courses in Brazil and although his work has had global influence, critical pedagogy’s relevance in the Arabian Gulf remains unexplored. The present study examines the role that critical pedagogy—student-centered teaching wherein agency and critical thinking are fostered through open inquiry and exploration of social and cultural issues connected to everyday life—plays in the English writing and research courses offered at three private Universities in the United Arab Emirates. Freire wrote, “I don’t want to be imported or exported. It is impossible to export pedagogical practices without reinventing them.” Just as English-language institutions often reinvent broader aspects of curriculum from the West to adapt to local culture, so too do practitioners of critical pedagogy need to adapt Freirian philosophy to avoid colonial, uncritical mindsets. The investigators focus their study on student experience, culture, and critical thinking. The study relies upon teacher surveys, interviews with course directors and program administrators, and analysis of teaching artifacts. The ultimate goal is to attempt to introduce critical pedagogy in English writing and research courses in the UAE in order to shift from passive rote learning styles to more creative, transformative methods

An Investigation of University Students' Classroom Seating Choices
Get PDFThe classroom is crucial for students, and seating position within the classroom can affect students’ performance. This study conducted a survey to investigate the relationship between seating zones and academic performance among 174 university students in Beijing. The results revealed differences in student performance in terms of seating position in small- and medium-sized traditional classrooms. However, the results did not indicate a similar hierarchy of student performance in terms of seating zones in larger traditional classrooms, horseshoe classrooms, collaboration classrooms, and computer classrooms. Additionally, the results revealed that most students considered the layout of a classroom to affect their performance

Adoptees are marked with an invisible difference, a virtually unrecognizable otherness that they bring with them into the classroom. Adoptees often spend a lifetime feeling the absence of their severed biological ties, awareness of the void created in their sense of self, and masking the ineffaceable marks that adoption has marred them with. Modeling Gun Ownership As A Social Disease
Get PDFGun violence is a leading cause of premature deaths in the United States. Evidence has linked higher levels of firearm ownership to an increased risk for violent crimes perpetrated with a firearm. Given that connection, the goal of this study is to use mathematical modeling techniques to better understand how different social conditions may impact gun-ownership rate. To accomplish that goal, we formulate an SIR-type model that treats gun ownership like a contagious social disease. The model divides the population into three classes: non-susceptible, susceptible, and gun owners. Model simulations are conducted to assess the effectiveness of different approaches in lowering gun-ownership rate. Model predictions suggest that anti-gun propaganda and stricter gun laws may have a significant effect in reducing the gun ownership population and the prevalence of gun-related violence in North Carolina
Informal learning spaces and their impact on learning in tertiary education: Framing new narratives of participation

This article outlines a model of participatory analysis that accounts for the conceptual complexity, lived experience and broad intentions of informal learning space. Further, the article contributes an educational language and orientation to the learning space narrative to inform post-occupancy evaluations and future projects
Leveraging Faculty Reflective Practice to Understand Active Learning Spaces: Flashbacks and Re-Captures
Get PDFAlthough learning spaces research is not new, research approaches that target the specific teaching and learning experiences of faculty and students who occupy active learning classrooms (ALCs) is nascent. We report on two novels data collection approaches: Flashbacks and Re-captures. Both leverage faculty reflective practice and provide windows into the rich and varied teaching and learning activities that active learning spaces afford. Findings suggest that in ALCs, faculty are easily able to design “activity strings,” multiple active learning activities knitted together within the same instructional period. Further, over time, activity strings become regular occurrences, manifesting as “instructional routines.
Creating Intentional Paths to Citizenship: An Analysis of Participation in Student Organizations
Get PDFThis study examines undergraduate students’ that graduated from a Midwestern university in May 2013 through December 2015 and their perception of their development of core competencies identified by Bok (2006), related to their participation in student organizations. The results indicated that students who participate in student organizations are significantly more likely to develop citizenship and other related skills and abilities. Furthermore, their degree of involvement, measured by the number of organizations they participate in, their level of involvement and the role students have within the organization can impact their development of competencies.
