Radical Love--Is It Radical Enough?
Get PDFAbstract The author applies a critical fearanalysis from his own critical repertoire to the seven articles on Freire’s “radical love” in the Special Issue IJCP 5(1), 2015. He concludes that the articles offer some useful insights on love but do not adequately nor fully engage the dialectic or dialogical Love-Fear dynamic found in most wisdom literature and major religions around the world through time. He provides his critical fearanalysis based on four Love-Fear models for inquiry that demonstrate linear binary, dialectic, and trialectic modes. His conclusion is that without a Freirean dialectic (e.g., Love-Fear as meta-motivational forces) applied to the understanding of “radical love,” an inadequate radicality will be gained and such discourses will ultimately fail enhancing an effective critical pedagogy for today’s political “culture of fear” context. Conceptual Logistics as a Form of Critical Pedagogy
Get PDFStill carrying on today, traditional approaches to learning in higher education are centered on a procedural transfer of teachers’ knowledge to their students. In order to improve old and new educational practices, a critical examination of the dominant components of the knowledge transfer process is necessary. Using the model of education advocated by Paulo Freire and others, Critical Pedagogy, the authors critique textbooks, a cornerstone of college classrooms. Their design and common use in classrooms are discussed to examine the important role textbooks play in constraining student learning. Using the liberating learning environment as a template, 34 years and 12 editions of a dominant Communication Studies textbook, Human Communication: The Basic Course, are interrogated to identify how authors, publishers, and faculty are misusing textbooks and the negative impact this has on learning. To address these issues, the authors propose necessary changes through a framework of liberating pedagogy employing Conceptual Logistics and powerful models of knowledge transfer.
Monitoring Implementation of Active Learning Classrooms at Lethbridge College. 2014-2015.
Get PDFHaving experienced preliminary success in designing two active learning classrooms, Lethbridge College developed an additional eight active learning classrooms as part of a three-year initiative spanning 2014-2017. Year one of the initiative entailed purchasing new audio-visual equipment and classroom furniture followed by installation. This significant increase in scale created opportunities to expose an even broader group of instructors and students to active learning classrooms. Year one research entailed investigating student and instructor perceptions on three topics, (1) equipment and technology, (2) learning environment design and (3) interaction. A Mathematical Analysis on the Transmission Dynamics of Neisseria gonorrhoeae
Get PDFIn this project, we analyze an epidemiological model describing the transmission of gonorrhea. We address two stratifications: one based on age groups and one based on education levels, each with a core sexual activity class and two noncore sexual activity classes. Using parameters based on sexual behavior in the United States, we address the impact of the average number of partners per year for each sexual activity class on the behavior of the model around two equilibrium points: a disease-free equilibrium and an endemic equilibrium. The focus of the project is to identify the conditions leading to the existence of each of the equilibrium points, analyze the stability of these points, and discuss the results. Ultimately, the goal of the project is to find conditions for the bifurcation of the two equilibrium points, in order to find the conditions resulting in the eradication of gonorrhea
