The Appreciative Mindset and its Congruency with Brené Brown’s Research

According to Bloom et al. (2008), there are six components of the Appreciative Mindset (i.e., care about and believe in the potential of each student, practice gratitude, continually hone one’s craft, remember your power, be insatiably curious, and be culturally aware and responsive). These six components are congruent with Brené Brown’s research on courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. The purpose of this article is to define the Appreciative Mindset and delineate its six components and how each component is congruent with Brené Brown’s research

Epistemologies of Ignorance With/in Curriculum Studies: The Politics of Not Knowing and Black Lives Mattering

The notion of epistemologies of ignorance is a fruitful site atwhich to probe issues of ignorance and knowledge in relation tothe production of both, particularly how blindness becomes thenecessary organizer for the insights we make and the interplay of dominant and subjugated discourses jockeying for recognition. (Malewski & Jaramillo, 2011, pg 3).“Epistemologies of ignorance ...center the ‘subject’ -woman, man, child, teacher, student-not as objects of knowledge production, but as sensuous beings who affectively live out the contradictions embedded within ignorance” (Malewski & Jaramillo, 2011, pg. 5)

The Perceived Effect of Learner-Centered Pedagogy in Secondary Active Learning Spaces and Impact on Student Engagement

This study collects perceptions from educators about how pedagogical practices could be transformed for a learner-centered concentration in active learning spaces to support student engagement. Seven participants provide data through a focus group, interviews, and observations. Four main themes are identified: (1) Collaboration and Engagement, (2) Learner-Centered Pedagogy, (3) Professional Development, and (4) Positive Classroom Behaviors. Professional development focused on best practices helps to build teacher capacity and collective efficacy. With an investment in professional development for educators focused on learner-centered pedagogy, there are opportunities to realize a return on this investment in increased student engagement and collaboration. The researcher recommends a tiered-pyramid representation of an integrated active-learning system, with a solid foundation of learner-centered pedagogy

A Committee to Manage Innovative Learning Spaces: Balancing Committee Size, Cross-Campus Representation, and Decision-Making Power

The growth in active learning classrooms represents a major shift in the pedagogy and built environment of higher education. While a robust literature exists to discuss the development, use, and evaluation of these innovative learning spaces, the practical considerations of managing innovative learning spaces has not received the same level of attention. This article describes the management model at _____ University, outlining key workflow considerations: committee size, cross-campus representation, and decision-making power. The conclusion sets out future research opportunities related to the institutional dynamics of innovative learning space management

EPA Particulate Matter Data - Analyses using Local Control Strategy

Statistical Learning methodology for analysis of large collections of observational, cross sectional data can be most effectivewhen the approach used is both Non-parametric and Unsupervised. We illustrate this using "LocalControl Strategy" on 2016 US environmental epidemiology data that we have contributed to Dryad. We invite researchers to download our CSV file, apply whatever methodology they wish, and contribute to development of a broad-based "consensus view" of potential effects of Secondary Organic Aerosols (Volatile Organic Compounds that have predominantly Biogenic or Anthropogenic origin) within PM2.5 particulate matter on Circulatory and/or Respiratory mortality. Our analyses here focus on the question: "Can life in a region with relatively high air-borne Biogenic particulate matter also be relatively dangerous in terms of Circulatory and/or Respiratory Mortality?

A New Journal and a New Collaboration

This journal has been a long time coming. When Julie Garlen andmyself began the Curriculum Studies Summer Collaborative (CSSC)we talked about creating a journal as an extension of the Collaborative. But, we were both early in our careers and it felt overwhelming to takeon such a project. So, it was put on hold. The idea came back up a fewyears ago when Marla Morris joined the planning council of the CSSC.She argued, convincingly, that it was necessary to have more outletsfor Curriculum scholars to publish their work. Attaching the journalto the Collaborative was a natural fit. We discussed what it might looklike and worked together to get the journal started

Junior high school students’ perception of physical factors in the classroom based on the Online Q Method

Students spend a lot of time in the classroom, and the physical environment in the classroom plays an important role in the development of students. It is necessary to scientifically investigate students' views and opinions on the physical factors in the classroom. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this study used the Q method online and allowed 40 junior high school students to rank 32 physical factors in the classrooms according to their own perspectives. The results can provide a reference for the reconstruction and construction of classrooms in middle schools and contribute to the design of learner-oriented humanized classrooms
