Appreciative Advising as a Theory-to-Practice Framework for Recruiting and Retaining College Student-Athletes
This article showcases how the Appreciative Advising theory-to-practice framework can be used to help recruit and retain prospective college student-athletes. With the world of college athletics continuously expanding to new opportunities for players, colleges and universities are tasked with creating new ways to recruit and retain student athletes in their systems. Appreciative Advising is a theory-to-practice approach used widely by academic advisors that has enhanced student success outcomes and can easily be adapted by college coaching staff to enhance their recruiting efforts

Conceptualizing and Operationalizing a Value of Communication Scale for Use in Training and Development Applications
In this two-part study, a value of communication (VOC) is conceptualized and operationalized to determine the worth an individual places on communication and its professional development for application in communication center training programs. In Study 1, a survey methodology evaluated the initially proposed VOC scale. An exploratory factor analysis was applied to identify a reliable 8-item single-factor solution and was also compared with other known self-reported communication trait variables to examine the scale’s potential convergent validity. In Study 2, a confirmatory factor analysis was applied using a survey methodology to validate the VOC scale further. Following a set of model modifications, a reliable single-factor 6-item scale was identified and proposed for use in communication training and development applications. The successful confirmation of a valid and reliable scale aims to provide a stable measure that can be utilized to help predict an individual’s willingness to invest time and energy in communication training and development

The dangers of approaching research, organizations, and people from a deficit-based perspective are explored before examining two frameworks, Eve Tuck’s (2009) desire-based research and Appreciative Education (Bloom et al., 2013) that employ an anti-deficit approach. The purpose of this article is to draw parallels between Appreciative Education and desire-based research in hopes that others might be further inspired to conduct additional research on these two topics

Moving Towards Intercultural Communicative Competence and Intercultural Citizenship: Lessons from Second Language Acquisition and Language Pedagogy for the Communication Center
Studies show English language learners (ELLs) experience increased communication apprehension and foreign language anxiety more than primary English speakers. Strategies to better assist ELLs with their public speaking skills are needed, especially within communication centers. One way is to better understand the intercultural aspects of the ELL student population on specific university campuses. Using foreign language pedagogy, this article explores best practices for communication center tutors working with ELL clients. Communication centers can use this information to assess traditional tutoring models and examine how their center meets the needs of this student population. The authors argue for an organizational structure of support and inclusivity, which may be achieved with a stronger emphasis on intercultural competency, including ways to address proficiency levels and practice cultural empathy. With proper support, communication consultants can achieve intercultural communicative competence and intercultural citizenship

The implementation of economic principles in communication centers can optimize their operations, increase efficiency, and improve customer satisfaction. Orientation and Social Inclusion: Supporting Students With Visual Impairments In Active Learning Classrooms
The percentage of undergraduate students in the U.S. who report a visual disability is over 3.5%, and worldwide over a billion people claim a significant visual impairment. As more higher learning institutions build Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs), it’s critical to understand how these students experience such a different style of learning environment. Although many students do not register their visual impairments at the college level, this report examines students who sought disability accommodations in their ALC classes to help them succeed. This paper identifies two dimensions, divided into 10 factors, of the learning experience in these classrooms and how students faced the challenge of these environments. To improve the future learning experience for these low-vision students, a list of pedagogical recommendations is included
Impact of a STEM Living Learning Community on First-Year Science and Technology Students' Success at a Historically Black College and University
Student retention and lack of encouragement are post-secondary institutional barriers that play a critical part in why African Americans are represented in small numbers in STEM (National Science Foundation, 2017). Historical Black Colleges and Universities have always promoted a supportive learning atmosphere for African American students. Living learning communities were created to improve academic outcomes and encourage social engagement. The findings of this study suggest that an LLC at an HBCU plays an integral role in sustaining programmatic retention for STEM majors and improving the academic and social outcomes of first-year science and technology students.
