The Effect of Democracy, Development, Religion and Science on Animal Welfare
Get PDFThis project examined the determinants of animal welfare across five countries: India, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden and the United Stated. The dependent variable of animal welfare was measured based on the Animal Protection Index (API) developed by the World Protection, a global non-profit organization. Democracy, development, religion and science were major areas that were evaluated to determine if there were correlations with the API. Correlation with the API was tested by using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Country’s Freedom House scores were used to evaluate Democracy. Development examined each country’s Human Development Index from the UN’s Human Development Reports and GDP per Capita as a percentage of Global GDP per capita from the CIA World Factbook. The evaluation of Religion with respect to the API was sectored into the percentage of the country that were Hindu, Christian, Non-Religious and Post-Materialist taken from the PBS World Religion Map and World Values Survey. Science was examined by the percentage of citable documents in each country and each country’s Hirsch Index from SCImago. The results of this study found a strong positive correlation between Democracy and the API and Percent Non Religious and API, while a strong negative correlation was evident between Hirsch Index and API. These results suggest that the more democratic and the more a population declares themselves as non-religious, the better the API. Conversely, the more scientific efforts in a country the worse the API. These initial analyses need to be verified with larger sample sizes as well as other socio-economic factors in order to evaluate and determine what would be the best indicators of a country’s commitment to animal welfare policies

An investigation into the relationship between mrub_3013, mrub_1477, and mrub_0224: Are they paralogs?
Get PDFThis project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We investigated the biological function of mrub_3013 and the nature of its relationship with mrub_1477 and mrub_0224. We hypothesized that mrub_3013 is orthologous to b2755 in E. coli K12 MG1655 (a.k.a. cas1). We predict that mrub_3013 encodes the enzyme Cas1, which is involved in spacer acquisition in the CRISPR-Cas prokaryotic defense system. Our hypothesis is supported by identical hits for b2755, mrub_3013, mrub_1477, and mrub_0224 from the CDD and Pfam databases and highly similar hits from the TIGRfam and PDB databases, as well as low E-values for pairwise NCBI Protein Blast comparisons. We predicted that mrub_3013 would have a paralogous relationship with mrub_1477 and mrub_0224. While mrub_3013, mrub_1477, and mrub_0224 are all clearly cas1 genes, they do not appear to be evolutionarily related and may not be true paralogs

Get PDFFamilies relocating to new communities face the hardships of learning how to navigate in a new legal and cultural environment and can also experience an interruption of past forms of passing down cultural, personal, or familial traditions, such as music. My research asks the following questions: how does music exist in the memories and daily life of Iraqi refugees in the Quad Cities, and how does the community provide specific expressive outlets for them? Using a combination of interviews with resettled Iraqi refugees and community members who try to reach out to them and participant observation, this research focuses on how some displaced and resettled people remember and use music from their past, how those musical traditions and knowledge are passed down to the next generation, and how the Quad Cities community tries to provide a platform for them to share their experiences
Feminism and Faith: How Women Find Empowerment in the Roman Catholic Church
