Mrub_3020, a paralog of mrub_1489, is orthologous to \u3cem\u3eE. coli\u3c/em\u3e casC (locus tag b2761)
This project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We investigated the biological functions of two genes: mrub_3020 and mrub_1489. We make two hypotheses in this investigation: a) mrub_3020 is orthologous to the gene b2761 in E. coli K12 MG1655 (a.k.a. casC); b) mrub_1489 is a paralog of mrub_3020. We also predict that the two genes encode unique proteins: mrub_3020 with DNA coordinates 3060491…3063190 encodes a CRISPR – associated helicase (Cas3) that supports the Cascade complex of the CRISPR – Cas adaptive immune system by destroying the invading viral DNA; mrub_1489 with DNA coordinates 1516312 …1519548 encodes a metal-dependent phosphohydrolase that serves as a helicase and is part of the CRISPR – Cas system. Our hypotheses are supported by data obtained from different bioinformatics tools. Tools like EcoCyc and GenBank® confirmed that both E. coli cas3 and mrub_3020 genes are orthologs, and they serve as helicases in their respective CRISPR/Cas systems. Additionally, essential evidences like the adjacent positioning of the mrub_3020 and mrub_1489 genes to Type 1 CRISPR – Cas operon show that these genes are paralogs. Mrub_3020 and mrub_1489 are shown to encode proteins that are involved in the CRISPR/Cas system and they are helicases. The phylogenetic tree generated to assess the evolutionary relationship between mrub_3020 and mrub_1489 shows that the former gene shares a branch with other species, while the latter gene seems to be distantly related to other species

Genetic Sequencing for Measuring Biodiversity in Recent and Ancient Marine Sediments
Taxonomic biodiversity, measured by counting the number of species present in a given area, is the most common method of capturing ecosystem biodiversity in recent and ancient environments. While this method is widely accepted, it is limited by poor preservation and identification of many individuals, making it impossible to include every species within an ecosystem and resulting in the loss of some diversity information. To address this issue, we measured the genetic biodiversity (in which species are determined based on sequencing of their DNA) of shallow marine ecosystems by extracting and sequencing the 18S ribosomal gene from bulk carbonate sediment samples taken from several locations around the Caribbean island of Grand Cayman. By comparing genetic and taxonomic biodiversity, we hope to provide a more reliable, or at least a supplementary, measure of molluscan biodiversity in this ecosystem.
Sediment samples were collected from three shallow (~8-10-ft depth) marine locations around Grand Cayman. These sediments were mostly composed of calcium carbonate from shell fragments of bivalves, gastropods, and other calcareous macroorganisms. Molluscan taxonomic diversity was measured by identifying individual shells. DNA was extracted using the QIAquick PCR Purification kit by QIAgen, and we attempted to amplify a hypervariable ~110 base pair fragment of the 18S rRNA gene using a high-fidelity PCR master mix. We determined that either our PCR protocol needed to be adjusted, or we did not have any DNA from the target region tested, as PCR failed to produce results

In this paper, I analyze attitudes towards classes across the political spectrum. I found that while liberals have more positive views of class, conservatives have a wider range of attitudes. Do Stands of Native Trees Harbor Different Invasive Species Than Stands of Planted Pine?
The most outstanding invasive species that can be found at Augustana’s Green Wing Environmental Laboratory are honeysuckle, buckthorn, multiflora rose, garlic mustard, autumn olive, and oriental bittersweet. These plants are not only disrupting the ecosystem at Green Wing, but they are doing it all over the country. The result of their disruption is that they have taken over entire habitats and left natural species with no way to compete for survival. To study this we used the line-point method as well as other forms of data collection to compare a non-native pine tree habitat to an area dominated by native trees. We repeated the line-point method ten times in each ecosystem, which gave us 1,600 total data points. Following our analysis, we could conclude that there were significantly more invasive species in the top canopies than native species, and there were more invasive species in the lower canopy of the area dominated by native trees in comparison to the lower canopy of the non-native pine ecosyste
Consumer Capitalist Christmas: How Participation in Christmas Frames Us as Religious Subjects
Christmas seems to start earlier and earlier every year. It starts with the music that plays on the radio, then retail stores begin to drape their shelves with red and green streamers, followed by Christmas movies running on every other channel. Every December, Christmas feels almost inescapable. The holiday manages to find its way into every facet of public life in the United States. Christians and non-Christians alike find themselves exchanging gifts with friends and loved ones on the 25th of December every year. Christmas is able to be so pervasive because of how unassuming it is. You participate in the rituals of Christmas because it markets itself as being trivial and wholesome. Christmas is much more than a Christian holiday, it is a secular consumerist holiday that has an unassuming nature and has Christian trappings. I will be looking over the many ways that Christmas is able to frame us as religious subjects and how the annual rituals that take place in America every December play a role in shaping how we perceive our world
Marketing Channel Effectiveness of New Medications/Medical Technology
This research project will study what marketing platforms/channels are most effective in the dissemination of new medical product news. Many people like myself have an illness/disease that requires daily medication, or require the daily use of a medical device. Due to the increasing influence of Direct to Consumer advertising of pharmaceuticals and the constant development of new medications and devices, patients may now more often go to the doctor with perceptions of what they should do to manage their illness/disease. This study aims to look at how the developers of these medications/medical devices promote their products currently and how certain channels may be more effective for their marketing efforts
Diversity of the brown alga Dictyota between deep and shallow reefs of Hawaii
In this presentation, I compile the results of 10 weeks of an NSF-funded REU during the summer of 2018. This research is regarding the biodiversity of Dictyota species found in the mesophotic and shallow reef ecosystems in the Hawaiian islands
