Public land management on the Upper Mississippi: Exploring relationships between management imperatives and ecosystem biodiversity
Presently, public land management structure tends to disregard the interconnected nature of the social and ecological systems within managed landscapes. Since these social and ecological systems so heavily influence the identity of landscapes, it is critical that land managers understand the interactions and effects land management has with ecological structure and function. This knowledge helps land managers create more effective, sustainable, and efficient management plans and decisions. This research uses a portion of Upper Mississippi River as a case study for analyzing and discussing public land management on the Mississippi and how its structure may be influencing the ecological identity of floodplain forest habitats. Ecological biodiversity data was collected through historical and modern research methodology. These two types of data sets were analyzed and compared to formulate a comprehensive narrative of the impacts “nested” management imperatives, management structure, land use legacies, and historic management decisions are having on present day measures of floodplain forest biodiversity

This project is part of the Meiothermus ruber genome analysis project, which uses a collection of online bioinformatics tools to predict gene function. We investigated the biological function of the gene Mrub_3014, which we hypothesize is a component of the CRISPR-Cas prokaryotic defense system. We predict that Mrub_3014 (DNA coordinates 3054943..3055575) encodes CRISPR-associated protein Cse3/case which function as an endonuclease. Our hypothesis is supported by identical hits for Mrub_3014 and b2756 to the KEGG, Pfam, TIGRfam, CDD and PDB databases, as well as a low E-value for a pairwise NCBI BLAST comparison. Both protein products are predicted to be localized to the cytoplasm. Finally, both proteins share numerous highly conserved amino acids, when compared to the consensus sequence of Pfam domains (PF08798 and PF08798)
Off to College with August and Ana: Social Change and the Reconstitution of Feminine Norms at Augustana College in the Postwar Period, 1945-1962
This project examines the changing demographics and culture surrounding higher education in the United States in the period following the Second World War and the relationship to normative constructions of femininity at Augustana College between 1945 and 1962. The college used a variety of means to reconstitute feminine norms, including social and sexual control and ritualized expressions of heterogamy, to construct a rigid femininity for women students. This allowed the college to reassert its norms and values in a changing world and to create continuity with the past. The Augustana Coed of the postwar period was white, northern European, middle-class, and asexually heterogamous. These norms constrained higher education for women within known parameters
