Un manuscrit perdut: el «Breviari d’amor» català de la Biblioteca del Palau

ABSTRACT - Among the lost manuscripts of the Library of the Palau Reial Menor in Barcelona, there was a volume containing the Catalan translation of Matfre Ermengaud’s Breviari d’amor and Anselm Turmeda’s Llibre dels bons amonestaments. Although this manuscript cannot be currently examined, two secondary sources remain. The aim of this paper is to offer the palaeographic transcription and the edition of Emengaut’s fragment, accompanied by a comparative study regarding the other manuscripts of the Catalan tradition. The Palau witness manuscript is essential to understand the diffusion of this encyclopaedic work as it is the earliest dated Breviari.KEYWORDS - Matfre Ermengaut; Breviari d’amor; Anselm Turmeda; Library of the Palau Reial Menor; Manuscripts; Medieval Catalan Translations

Dos fragmentos de «Ci nous dit» en una antigua encuadernación

    Get PDF
Abstract - The article reports the discovery of two small fragments of the Ci nous dit, a 14th-century French book of exempla, located in the binding of a manuscript of the Real Biblioteca de San Lorenzo de El Escorial. This allows us to assume that this collection of stories and anecdotes circulated in Castile in the Middle Ages. In addition, an evidence of its use is adduced by Pedro López de Ayala, San Vicente Ferrer and, perhaps, don Juan Manuel. Keywords - Ci nous dit, Parchment Pieces, Medieval French Exemplary Literature, Reception in Medieval Castile

«Pensemus qualiter viri prehonorati a propria diverterunt» (DVE, I, xiv, 5): els textos occitans d’un cercle de poetes toscans

    Get PDF
Abstract - This article re-examines a set of Occitan texts written by a circle of Tuscan poets and their importance for understanding the reception of troubadour culture in medieval Tuscany. Often viewed as marginal, these texts have not been adequately analyzed for what they can tell us about the use of Occitan as a literary language in Italy at the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries. Instead of casting them as unoriginal, derivative, or linguistically incorrect attempts at Occitan composition by foreign poets, this article considers their originality, innovation, and the transformations they may have undergone in their transmission history. Arguing that these texts be viewed as invaluable evidence of a vibrant Occitanophone literary culture in Tuscany, I advocate for further inquiry into the multilingual compositions of this circle of Tuscan poets. Keywords - Dante Alighieri, Occitan Literature in Italy, Occitan Literature in Catalonia, Medieval Multilingualism, Sonnet

La fi d'una llegenda: Arnau de Vilanova davant la màgia i l'astrologia

This article revises Arnau’s thoughts and practice regard-ing magic and astrology, two core aspects in the creation of an enduring legendary image. If apocryphal works are disregarded, the attitudes he sustains in his writing are in line with those of contemporary intellectuals: a rejec-tion of necromancy coupled with the acceptance of oc-cult astral properties as the foundation of natural magic. These properties are put to use in his medical treatises, where astrology is also the basis for some remedies. However, none of the treatises on medical astrology that have been transmitted under his name are his

Fiscalitat municipal sobre productes alimentaris a Castelló d’Empúries (1350–1375)

    Get PDF
During the 14th century, Catalan towns, together with those in the rest of the Crown of Aragon, issued enormous quantities of long-term debt, which took the form of sales of perpetual and lifelong annuities ("censals morts" and "violaris"), in order to finance their numerous economic needs of different types. As a consequence of the growing issuing of debt instruments, town governments had to build a fiscal system of increasing complexity to satisfy the rising annual interests. The system was based on a set of indirect taxes over commerce and the consumption of certain food and manufactured products. Castelló d’Empúries was not an exception and the town engaged and consolidated long-term debt between approximately 1350 and 1375. This article analyses the evolution of the taxes on food that the town government of Castelló was administering during this period (yield, tariffs and exempt groups), applied on wine and grapes, meat, cereal milling, bread, oil, fish and pigs. On these grounds, the article assesses whether the increasing town debt resulted in a growing tax pressure on its inhabitants, and offers an overview of the main food types that were commercialised in Castelló during the 14th century
