Regional Dynamics of Globalization: Comparative Analysis of the Porcelain Industry in Japan
Full text linkThis paper analyzes the process of globalization through analysis of the porcelain industly in Japan in the late 19th centluy. The study of porcelains illuminates the dynamics as well as impacts of globalization on regional industry and local communities. The study investigates how the relations of those who were engaged in the production and distribution of porcelains influenced the process of development of the porcelain industry along with the increase of transnational interactions in the late 19th centluy. This study compares two major sites of porcelain production to illustrate the regional differences in manufacturing and distributing porcelains, including the major agents, the sources of funding, and the activities themselves. Aalysis showed that the pre-existing relations and practices shaped the ways of organizing resources for the development of the porcelain industly. While some producers and merchants gained public funding and institutional support for establishing factries with new machinery and export of products, others took a more independent path in the process of introducing new technology in production and developing trade networks. Comparative regional analysis illuminates regional variances of the relations of those who were engaged in the porcelain industry that formed variant paths of industrial development along with globalization.departmental bulletin pape
