Private Access to Medicine in Stone Butch Blues and the Framework of Transsexual/Transgender
Get PDFSince the emergence of transgender theory and the transgender movement,
the two categories of transsexual and transgender have been a major point of
confrontation in discussions about the bodies and identities of gender variant
people. This paper discusses Leslie Feinberg’s novel Stone Butch Blues (1993),
and the controversy between Jay Prosser and Judith Halberstam regarding the
reading of its protagonist as another instance of this confrontation.
Prosser positions the experience of the protagonist Jess, a stone butch, as
a bodily narrative of a transsexual, while Halberstam frames it as representing
a transgender masculinity which is not based on the distinction between
lesbian butch and FTM transsexual. There is, however, an element that is easily
overlooked in this oppositional framework of transsexual versus transgender:
the relationship of Jess’s private access to medicine and the questions of class.
As I argue in this paper, when people can access medical services related
to gender reassignment without having to take the official route via a country’s
public health system, the framework of transsexual versus transgender is only
partially effective. For, under such circumstances, it is class rather than medical

“Early Marriage” from the Perspective of Those Who Have Experienced It: A Report from Bangladesh
Get PDFThere is an increasing understanding that “early marriage” has a negative
impact on the physical and mental health, as well as the education of girls.
Hence, efforts to eradicate early marriage are being promoted.
Bangladesh is one of the countries with a high rate of early marriages.
Previous studies on early marriage in Bangladesh point out that the level of
education and ignorance towards potential risks are influential factors in
determining the likelihood of early marriage. Therefore, approaches to
eradicate early marriage through the promotion of school education and risk
awareness are being taken. Yet, despite the fact that in Bangladesh – especially
with regards to women – the education index has increased, the rate of early
marriages remains high.
This paper aims to examine the social meanings of and the ways
individuals think about early marriage in Bangladesh through interviews with
people who experienced early marriage. This field research shows that the
actual situation of the participants is different from the prevailing opinion
regarding early marriage that ignorance towards potential risks and low levels
of education are the main causes of early marriages.
This research identifies two key factors underlying early marriage. One is
a growing awareness of the importance of education for having better job
opportunities and a greater income. The second one is the current situation of
women in Bangladesh, who have to rely on marital status for socioeconomic
safety. Parents choose early marriage as a result of the influence of both factors.
In other words, on the one hand there is a traditional understanding of
marriage, as a strategy to avoid potential future risks for girls and women and
ensure a stable social life. On the other hand, marriage is also seen as a way
for girls and young women to continue their education after, which then allows
them to get better employment opportunities, thus raising their and their
family’s status. However, while acknowledging that early marriage is
considered as a new strategy to ensure a better life for girls and young women,
this paper does not affirm early marriage as such. Rather, this paper aims to
question the effectiveness of current measures to end early marriage based on

Maintaining Student Motivation When Using Authentic Reading Materials
Get PDFAuthentic reading materials have become a standard part of many second
language (L2) classes as they provide rich linguistic input and expose students to
a broad range of information. Many advocates of their use claim that such
materials motivate learners. However, there are concerns that without effective
selection and scaffolding of these texts, they may have a negative impact on
learner motivation. In this paper, I outline research into the motivational effect of
the use of authentic reading materials on L2 learners. I also provide a number of
suggestions as to how teachers can scaffold the materials so as to increase

A Historical Survey of the Musicological Researches on Korean and Japanese Cultures: Perspectives for a Future Cooperation of Musicologists in Asia
Get PDF1990 年代から続くいわゆる「韓流」ブームは、今も衰えを見せていない。
音楽学の分野においても、安田、閔による日韓の学校唱歌の共同研究を一
例として、その後も、植村、高、宗、藤井らの充実した研究が続いてい
る。今後は、日韓の関係だけでなく、欧米の影響を受けつつ近代化を実現
してきた他のアジア諸国の状況とも比較検討しながら、より広い視野での
アジアにおける文化変容の問題を論じることが必要であろう。今日の急速
なグローバル化の中で、音楽学には、さらに重要な役割と新たな展開が期
待されており、その意味でも、アジアの音楽学者が、対話を通して協力し
ながら、健全な未来を築いて行くことが望まれる。かつて1913（大正2）
年に発表された、兼常による朝鮮半島の伝統音楽の研究は、現地の音楽家
の協力を得て行われ、当時の政治社会的状況による限界はあるものの、一
つの理想的な学問的交流の態度を示す前例と言えるだろう。安田、閔、高
の研究による日韓の学校唱歌の詳細な継続的研究は、欧米、日本、韓国の
関係性の中で、1880 年代から1920 年代にかけて、どのように東アジアの
音楽文化が形成されたかを知る上で重要な業績である。1970 年代に発表
された、小泉による韓国音楽の研究において、韓国の遊牧民族に起源を持
つとされた「三拍子」の問題は大きな話題となった。日本では、一時はそ
の学説が受容されたかに見えたが、本来、アジアの学者によって広く議
論されるべきであった課題であろう。1980 年代以降は、韓国の多くの演
奏芸能が日本で紹介されて特に関心を集め、これは2000 年代に入ってか
らの、韓国の伝統音楽、ポップスに関する学問的関心の拡大に繋がった。
ウェスト＝イースタン・ディヴァン・オーケストラを通してのバレンボイ
ムの活動にも象徴されるように、音楽、そして音楽家は、敵意という壁を
容易に乗り越えることが出来る。音楽学的関心を通して平和を実現するた
めに、音楽学者がさらに協力して未来に向けて活動する必要があり、その
ために、日韓だけでなく、アジアの音楽学者が協働しなければならない時
が来ているのである。李王朝時代、朝鮮通信使を通して日本と交流してい
た詳しい記録が残されており、今日と同じように、国の違いを越えて、音
楽を含む、お互いの文物に人々は強い関心を持っていた。日韓の関係改
善が膠着している今だからこそ、相互の学問と文化の交流が重要なので

On Peace in Albert Schweitzer’s Theology
Get PDF本稿は、アルベルト・シュヴァイツァーAlbert Schweitzer（1875-1965）
によるさまざまな平和論の中から、とくに神学及び説教の中で取り上げら
れた平和論に焦点を当てて、彼の平和論のキリスト教的本質構造について
検討したものである。
最初に取り上げるのは、説教における平和論である。ここでの基本路線
は、信徒たちの日々の信仰生活に即した心の平安という形での平和思想で
ある。しかし、それは決して単なる安静な状態ではなく、神の霊 Geist が
その人自身の精神 Geist をしてこの世での活動へと駆動する力となる。そ
こから平和は、人々の平和的あり方として同心円状に拡大し、最終的には
人類規模にまで至ることで、平和の国としての神の国をも示唆するものと
なる。
次に神学的著作での平和論を問題にする。遺稿『神の国とキリスト教』
では、キリスト教の歴史に即して神の国観の変遷が詳論されている。その
最後の時期が20世紀後半の冷戦の時期である。この時、シュヴァイツァー
の念頭には、まさに神の国の実現か、そうでなければ人類の滅亡かという
究極の選択肢すらあった。その時期までに、彼は生への畏敬の倫理思想や
人間性の理念などを通じて、広く人々にも訴える形で平和思想を説いて
いた。
そこで最後に、このように一般的な形で説かれた平和論の根底にも、平
和の国としての神の国の理念が生き生きと存するところを論じる。生への
畏敬が最初に説かれたのが説教であることからも分かるように、生への畏
敬の思想には、普遍化されたキリスト教的平和論が反映している。それと
同時に、平和の理念はあらゆる宗教や思想にも存在するという確信があっ
た。彼が文化哲学の文脈の中で生への畏敬や人間性の思想として平和論を
