The Snow, the Moon, and the Blossomsas Signs of Longing for One’s Spiritual Counterpart: The Importance of the Drama Adaptation of The Great Mirror of Male Love
Get PDFAfter the impressive appearance of the comic version of The Great Mirror of Male Love (published by Kadokawa in 2016), this remarkable work of Ihara Saikaku, which has fallen into oblivion for a long time, started attracting the attention of readers who have been indifferent to classical literature. Moreover, the comic adaptation of Saikaku’s novel has opened the way for other adaptations, such as new translations into modern language, TV programs, and even a dramatization.
The aim of this paper, which has been inspired by the drama adaptation, is to suggest new sources of the chapter “3:2 Tortured to Death with Snow on His Sleeve” of The Great Mirror of Male Love. The paper questions the traditional interpretations, which relate this chapter to the Noh drama Tenko, by pointing at the feeble argumentation. Then it proceeds with the exploration of its possible connection with the Noh drama Matsumushi by referring to some symbolic expressions, which can be considered as allusions to the famous poem of the Chinese poet Po Chü-I (Bai Juyi): “in times of snow, the shining moon, and cherry blossoms, I think of you, my dear friend!”
The shocking words in the title “Tortured to Death”, can be consider as an imitation of the famous Noh play and farce. This allows us to suppose that the death of Haemon, the elder lover of the young boy Sasanosuke, was an accident caused by Sasanoske’s childishness, rather than labeling the boy as a sadist.
The paper ends up with the conclusion that the analysis of the adaptions of classical texts is akin to the investigation of their potential context. This methodology will open new horizons for the study of sources in the field of classical Japanese literature.departmental bulletin pape
Examination of “Forced Passage of the Collective Defense Bill” from a Viewpoint of Comparative Politics -Suggestion of “Legal Coup Concept” as an Ideal-type Hypothetical Concept
Get PDFRecently, books such as How Democracies Die suggested that even countries with formal democratic institutions experience decay or disfunction in their democratic processes. Recent Japanese political incidents appeared to confirm such observation.
The “forced passage of the collective defense bill” of 2015 is one of the most controversial issues in recent Japan. Although many scholars specialized in constitution studies asserted that the collective defense bill was unconstitutional, the governing party forced the approval of the bill in the national Diet.
The purposes of this paper are threefold. Firstly, the processes of passing the collective defense bill will be examined. Secondly, illegal political processes such as revolution and coup d’état, and the approval of the collective defense bill will be compared. Thirdly, the ideal types of illegal political process will be constructed. In order to analyze and understand the processes of the approval of the collective defense bill, concepts (and terms) such as “maneuver coup” and “legal coup” as an ideal type of hypothetical terms will be suggested.

The Lost Discussion on Sexual Difference in Marriage Law in Prewar Japan
Get PDF‘Until very recently, there was almost no discussion concerning marriage between same-sex couples in Japan.’ I have stated that a few times in my prior works not only because it is a widespread belief among Japanese legal scholars, but because during my master research, I looked into it and, indeed, I did not find any papers on the topic. The scarce literature almost forced me to change my research topic. Nevertheless, three years after I finished my master thesis, I randomly stumbled upon a paper referring to a prewar civil law handbook that apparently mentioned something about the issue. I quickly learned that it was merely the end of the thread of a legal discussion that stretched back to the very codification process of the Japanese civil code. Bringing back this lost discussion, identifying its origins in French Law, rediscovering its place within Japanese family law, and demonstrating its implications became the topic of my doctoral degree. In this paper, I summarize part of my findings concerning prewar Japan in an attempt to shed some light on a matter that appears to have been avoided by legal scholars in Japan: can Japanese marriage law as provided in the Civil Code really be construed as requiring sexual difference as a substantial condition for marriage? First, I analyze references to the issue in the codifying process (II). Next, I describe the scholarly discussions carried out from the end of the Meiji Era to the early 1940s, before the end of World War II (III). The *Long-C Constraint and Word-Initial Aspirates in Hateruma Yaeyama, a Southern Ryukyuan Language
Get PDF波照間方言は，沖縄県八重山郡竹富町に属する波照間島で話されている言語である。波照間方言の特 徴として，語頭の無声阻害音に強い帯気が報告されている。この帯気は，フットに関する韻律条件，す なわちフットには必ず重音節が必要であるという条件を満たすために実現していると考えられる。本論 文では，強い帯気が観察されるパターンを概観し，*Long-C 制約の適用を提案する。*Long-C 制約とは， 音声的に長い区間を持つ子音を禁止する制約である。本制約と韻律条件の結果，代替操作として頭子音 がモーラを担い，強い帯気が実現すると考える。
Hateruma Yaeyaman is an endangered southern Ryukyuan language spoken in the Hateruma island. In Hateruma, there is a limited distribution of strong aspiration in disyllabic words which is argued to be the result of a prosodic condition for a foot: all feet must have at least one heavy syllable. After presenting the distribution of strong aspiration in Hateruma, we propose the *Long-C constraint that is violated when a consonant is phonetically lengthened. The prosodic requirement for a heavy syllable in a foot, coupled with the *Long-C constraint results in a repair strategy that associates an epenthetic mora with an onset consonant that is realized with strong aspiration.departmental bulletin pape
