This paper talks about what role the US has had through the English learning, and how it contributed to the settlement and the development of proficiency of English in Korea. It has been aiming for English up to the present of English education in Korea, right from the beginning; there were American teachers, special guest teachers for teaching English at the first modern School of Korea, and American missionaries who established very first private schools and taught Korean students English through English in a small group using American school textbooks. US army military government in Korea formulated the first plans for English education at Korean school before Korean government formation after liberation. It also surveys the historical background of English teaching in Korea. It is divisible into three distinct periods: (1) Dawning, the late period of Chosun, (2) Downturn, Japanese colonial era, and (3) Development process since 1945. This may help us to be equipped with the awareness and understanding of the main issues in English education in Korea and its implication for the language education. English education in Korea has not existed as an international language but as a necessary language for success in Korean society.departmental bulletin pape

Electronic discourse has become an increasingly important part of our everyday lives. This study explores codeswitching among Japanese-English bilinguals in their electronic discourse, such as emails and text messaging. Over 1000+ emails/text messages were collected from two groups of Japanese-English bilinguals, namely 20 adults and 20 teenagers. Syntactic analyses showed different types of codeswitches: tagging, intrasentential, intersentential, and lexical switches. Functional analyses revealed a strong tendency to switch for different pragmatic functions, such as speech acts, including apologies and expressions of thanks, as well as humor and emphasis. Furthermore, individual differences and age differences were also observed.departmental bulletin pape

いることがわかった。This study aims to illustrate the 15-year career formation process of a Thai secondary school
teacher of the Japanese language, referred to as “A,” who majored in Japanese-language
education and became a teacher after graduation. In order to reveal the factors that influenced
A’s career choices, this study uses the trajectory equifinality approach. The official support
provided by the Japanese government is also analyzed as a factor. The analysis reveals that A’s
interactions with the Thai environment (society, history, and culture) created a sense of value
which influenced A’s decision to be a teacher. Those values are classified as follows: 1) a career
as a secondary school teacher can lead to a better life; 2) the career is rewarding because it
involves student growth; and 3) the career is rewarding because of opportunities for professional
development. The official support provided by the Japanese government is one of the factors that
influenced A’s career choices.departmental bulletin pape
Can the Hostess Speak?: “Ex-Hostess” Author Narratives and Its Readers’ Responses
Since around 2000, hostesses have expanded opportunities to write and/
or speak about hostesses. This has become a kind of social phenomenon. This
paper focuses on the hostesses’ narratives about hostesses and considers the
following two questions. Firstly, in the expanding opportunities of narratives
by hostesses, can hostesses who talk about hostesses represent (“speak for”/“represent”)
those who do not? This question is about representation. Secondly,
how do readers/listeners respond to the narratives of hostesses by
hostesses? This question is about readers’ responses. In order to answer these
questions, this paper analyzes one of the novels written by “ex-hostess” Yuzuki
Muroi, Dragonfly(1999), in which the protagonist comes to identify herself as
a hostess.
Firstly, previous literature on hostesses is introduced, and its problems
and significance are presented. Secondly, I consider the effects of the stigma
attached to hostesses in regards to issues of representation. By employing
Spivak’s subaltern theory, I argue that it is impossible for the hostesses who
talk about hostesses to represent those who do not talk. Then, I examine how
“ex-hostess” author Yuzuki Muroi narrated about hostesses in her novel
Dragonfly. In this novel, hostesses are characterized as being greedy, slutty and
irrational. These characteristics are in accordance with the stereotyped and
socially stigmatized image of hostesses. The “real” hostess in this text is not
merely the occupation but is also presented as a person who identifies with
the stereotyped image of hostesses.
Finally, by employing Foucault’s author function theory, I study how
readers responded to Dragonfly. Among the readers’ interpretations, I found
that the readers considered what was written in the novel to be the “reality”
of the hostess world. The author’s identity as an “ex-hostess” guarantees the
authenticity of the narrative of hostesses and convinced the readers of its
reality.
In conclusion, the current study clarifies that the “real” hostess in the
readers’ minds was fabricated in a consistent manner with Muroi’s narrative
and the preexisting stereotyped image, due to Muroi’s identity as “ex-hostess”
which guarantees its authenticity.departmental bulletin pape
