Intercultural Communication and Mentalization: From the Viewpoint of Intercultural Adaptation Support and Stress Response
Get PDF日本の外国人在住者は近年急激に増加し，総務省は施策として多文化共生社会の推進を進めているが， 実際の取り組み内容は異文化適応の二側面のうち，外国人を受け入れるホスト側の日本社会・文化の情 報情報やスキルの伝授に留まる「社会文化的適応」の側面に偏り，滞在年数や日本語能力の高さが「臨 床心理的適応」の促進に繋がらない現状がある。 本研究ノートでは，新しい文化に出会うゲストと，迎え入れるホスト側の間での異文化適応支援で生 じている困難を，メンタライジングの概念を用いることで検討した。異文化適応をミクロの異文化間コ ミュニケーションで捉え，異文化間コミュニケーションではゲストとホスト双方に文化的ストレスによ る反応として非メンタライジングの状態が生じる可能性について考察した。
With the sudden increase of the population of foreign nationals in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communication is trying to facilitate the policy of a multicultural society; however, actual content of the support places disproportional emphasis on “socio-cultural adaptation” of intercultural adaptation, and neither foreign national’s duration of visiting nor high capacity of Japanese language leads the facilitation of “clinical psychological adaptation”.
This paper aims to apply and discuss the concept of mentalizing to the difficulties in intercultural adaptation support between the foreign guests who encounter the new culture and the hosts who are accepting guests. Considering intercultural adaptation as an interpersonal communication from a microscopic point of view, the possibility of the activation of non-mentalizing modes as a response to the cultural stress in both guests and hosts in intercultural communication is discussed.departmental bulletin pape
Exploring Global Citizenship in American Liberal Arts Colleges: From the Case Study of Four Colleges
Get PDF本稿は，グローバル化の影響を受けて変化する高等教育において，高等教育の市民性の醸成という社 会的な役割に焦点を当て，アメリカの 4 つのリベラルアーツ大学の先駆的な事例を分析する。具体的に は，教育プログラムの中にいかにグローバルなレベルの市民参加が統合されているか，またグローバル レベルの市民参加プログラムがどのようにデザインされ実施されているのかというリサーチクエスチョ ンを設定し，2018 年 2～4 月に 23 名の教職員への半構造化インタビューおよびドキュメント調査を実施 した。4 大学に共通して見られる特徴としては，組織主導，教員主導，学生主導の 3 つの意味において オーナーシップが共有され，多様な取り組みが行われているという点，救世主コンプレックスや文化的 観光に批判的な視点をもちながら教職員および学生のあり方を見直すような制度やプログラムが導入さ れている点，ローカルとグローバルの間を繋ぐ問題意識を意識的に学内に持ち込む取り組みがなされて いる点，大学の使命とその他の制度が連動している点が挙げられる。
This article aims at examining the social role of higher education to nurture global citizenship in the context of accelerated globalization. The research took the case study approach to 4 liberal arts colleges in the United States for the purpose of understanding the underlining perception and institution that support the innovative cases. In concrete terms, two research questions were posed: How do the colleges integrate civic engagement at the global level into the education programs?; and how do they design and implement the programs as an institution? The author conducted the semi-structured interviews with 24 faculty and staff members in total and analyzed the documents of four colleges in February-April, 2018. The study revealed four common characteristics across the four colleges, namely, 1) a combination of institution-led, faculty-led, and student-led approaches; 2) intentional programs that attempt to avoid savior complex and cultural tourism; 3) intentional integration of common issues that link the local level with the global level into various education, research, and training programs for faculty, staff, and students, and; 4) consistency in university mission and the institutional, educational, and financial measures to enhance civic engagement at the global level. In sum, various actors are collaboratively promoting the concept of global citizenship in education, training, research, and service with shared ownership, with the different degrees and dynamics across the four colleges.departmental bulletin pape

Self-reflexivity and the Labor of Translation: Insights for Comparative Rhetoric
Get PDFAs opportunities for transnational engagements continue to increase in the age
of globalization, there is a pressing need for responsible methods that attend to
the power asymmetries inherent in all comparative endeavors. Scholars of
comparative rhetoric have called attention to the importance of self-reflexivity
and the ethical complexities of speaking for/about others. Meanwhile, scholars
in translation studies have grappled with similar questions as an increase in
intercultural research across disciplines has brought translation issues to the
fore. This paper examines advancements in translation studies scholarship that
have inspired translation scholar-practitioners to embrace self-reflexive
practices in their work. One promising way forward is calling for more
nuanced, personal accounts of the hidden labor of translation in comparative
work: honest accounts that confront, rather than suppress, the frustration and
disorientation that often accompany such labor. I conclude with implications

How Korean College Students Respond When Receiving Gratitude: Linguistic Strategies for Expressing Gratitude in a Korean Speech Community
Get PDFWhen a person feels indebted, expressions of gratitude are performed in an effort to
readjust the balance in the relationship between the interlocutors; they employ linguistic
strategies to deliver their feelings in the appropriate ways to fit the norms or rules of
communication in their speech community. That person needs to consider various factors
such as the degree of the indebtedness burden, the relative degree of intimacy and the speech
situation. Previous Korean literature concerning gratitude situations, however, has focused on
how to express gratitude but has ignored the response to the expressions of gratitude. This
research focused on how speakers respond to expressions of gratitude in the Korean language
and culture. It analyzes the DCT (Discourse Completion Test) data from Korean college
students paying attention to how Korean people interact in speech situations of gratitude from
the perspective of linguist strategy. DCT analysis shows that depending upon elements such
as intimacy, age or social status, degree of indebtedness, Korean college students adopt a
variety of linguistic strategies to respond to gratitude. This study can help learners of Korean
choose and perform the appropriate linguistic strategies without fear of pragmatic failure.departmental bulletin pape
