A Comparative Study of Japanese and Korean College Students’ Response to Gratitude
Get PDF感謝場面におけるこれまでの研究は「感謝の表明」に重点が置かれており、連鎖して 行われる「感謝表現への応答」はあまり注目されてこなかった。感謝の表明という行為 がそれぞれのことば共同体による社会文化的特殊性を保つように、その感謝表現に対し てどのように言い返すのかということも、同じくことば共同体の相互行為的規範を反 映する。本稿では、上下・親疎関係、負担程度などを細かく設定した談話完成テスト （Discourse Completion Test、以下DCT）を行い、日韓の大学生は相手からの感謝に対 してどのように応答しているのかについて分析及び考察を行った。分析の結果、日韓の 大学生は、与えられた場面や状況に応じて社会的要因を反映しながら様々な応答表現を 選択して使い分けていることがわかった。また、日本では失礼な言語行為として誤解さ れる余地のある表現が、韓国では状況に応じて用いられるなど、同じような応答表現が 日韓で異なって解釈されることもあった。This research focuses on how speakers respond to expressions of gratitude in Japanese and Korean from a contrastive perspective. This analysis of the DCT data from Japanese and Korean college students targets how they perform linguistic strategies in the speech situations of gratitude. The results show that the college students from each country used a variety of linguistic strategies in responding to gratitude reflecting the degree of the interlocutors’ relationship, indebtedness, intimacy and social status. Some strategies were misinterpreted causing misunderstanding: Korean students chose “request of reward for their kindness” as a strategy with their close friends while Japanese students regarded the response to the same situation as impolite or rude. This study can enable the learners of Japanese and Korean to perform appropriate linguistic strategies by considering a variety of social factors in the situation of gratitude.departmental bulletin pape
