The Unknown Properties and Uses of the Optative Marker –(y)A in Turkish
In standard Turkish, there is an undefined form of the optative mood marker, which is close to being standardized. In this study, I aim to show that this optative mood marker only surfaces in the first person singular and plural forms only contrary to its standard counterpart, and to show that the optative mood marker paired with past markers are both overtly and covertly the alternative forms while facilitating the use of a simple reverse engineering method, based on the linear order of the TAM markers in Turkish. I claim that alternative form behaves exactly like the standard form. Inferring from the results of the reverse engineering method, I also claim that these results further support the assumption that first person singular and plural optative paradigms are not transparent (Kahnemuyipour & Kornfilt, 2006).departmental bulletin pape
Higher Education Institutions’ Responses to the COVID-19 Outbreak: An Analysis of Crisis Communication Patterns in 12 Universities’ Public Announcements
Under the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, higher education institutions have been required to develop effective crisis communication. This study investigates the communication strategies of 12 higher education institutions in the United States and Japan during the COVID-19 pandemic based on the situational crisis communication theory (SCCT). Publicly available messages on each institute’s COVID-19 web page were analyzed and examined in terms of how each institution managed to secure its reputations in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and offered information to multiple audiences. These analyses were conducted by employing the text analysis program Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count 2015 (LIWC2015) and R (Version 4. 1. 0). The result delineates that higher education institutes’ responses to the COVID-19 pandemic relate to SCCT (instructing information, adjusting information, managing reputation).departmental bulletin pape

Refining and validating a Japanese university english teachers’ self-efficacy questionnaire
In applied linguistics, many researchers have been studying teacher self-efficacy. Some of them have been improving and validating the instrument to measure it. The purpose of the present study is to validate an adapted version of Praver’s (2014) questionnaire. The modified questionnaire, a 30-item 6-point Likert scale, was comprised of 10 items measuring efficacy for student engagement (SE), 10 items measuring efficacy for instructional strategies (IS), and 10 items measuring efficacy for classroom management (CM). The questionnaire was answered by 33 English teachers who work at a Japanese university, and a Rasch analysis was performed to examine its validity. The results showed that although there were a few items that should be replaced, most of the items functioned well. The modified items increased the difficulty level so that they could even measure the self-efficacy of able teachers.departmental bulletin pape
