論文内容の要旨 
 
アンナ・タットンの論文「クィア・ビロンギングネス：日本におけるクィア
女性およびトランスジェンダーのための物理的スペースの役割の探求」は、日
本全体の LGBTQ+の人々の生活におけるコミュニティグループの重要な役割に
ついての質的社会学的調査を提示する。一部の空間は祝いや喜びの場として機
能するが、他の空間は日本の法律で十分に保護されていないマイノリティグル
ープにとって特に意義深く不可欠なピアサポートを提供する。  
日本における LGBTQ+コミュニティに関する既存の研究の多くは、バーのよ
うなナイトライフの場か特定の地域に焦点を当てる傾向がある。これに対し
て、本研究は「クィアスペース」─「ナイトライフ外に存在し非商業的な
LGBTQ+の人々のために/によって作られたスペース」として本論文で定義され
る─が、クィア女性やトランスの人々による自己認識の形成において果たす役
割を調査する。アンナ・タットンは、広範なフィールドワークを通じて、
LGBTQ+コミュニティスペースのメンバーまたは主催者と 45 回のインタビュー

を実施した。インタビューに加えて、彼女は参与観察に取り組み、自由形式の
調査質問やアンケートを通じてデータを収集した。 
このプロジェクトは、合計 58 人の参加者から収集された質的および量的デ
ータの質的分析を含む。その中で、45 人がインタビューを通じて貢献し、14
人が自由形式の調査質問を通じて貢献した（重複あり）。参加者のうち、42 人
は日本人で、16 人は非日本人であり、全員が日本に 5 年以上居住している。ジ
ェンダーアイデンティティに関しては、26 人のシスジェンダー女性、4 人のト
ランスジェンダー女性、3 人のトランスジェンダー男性、8 人のノンバイナリ
ーまたは X ジェンダーとなっている。これら 51 人の参加者が非異性愛者と自
認した。残りの 7 人は、異性愛者または不明と自認しており、クィアの子ども
たちの親またはアライとしてコミュニティの構築に積極的に関与していた。彼
らの観点は、この研究の焦点にとって貴重で妥当性があると見なされる。 
この論文は、いくつかの中心的な研究課題に取り組んでいる。それらは、日
本における LGBTQ+の人々が直面している切迫した問題は何か？、草の根から
の運動やコミュニティスペースは彼らの生活にどのような役割を果たしている
のか？、そして、対面での交流の代替としてのオンラインスペースの可能性と

本研究の結果は、コミュニティスペースへの参加と参加者の幸福感および自

アスペースがより広い LGBTQ+コミュニティを包括し代表することを保証する

Anna Tatton’s dissertation, "Queer Belongingness: Exploring the Role of 
Physical Spaces for Queer Women and Trans People in Japan,"  offers a qualitative 
sociological investigation into the vital role that community groups play in the lives 
of LGBTQ+ individuals across Japan. While some spaces serve as sites of celebration 
and joy, others offer crucial peer support—particularly significant for minority 
groups not adequately protected by Japanese law. 
Much of the existing research on LGBTQ+ communities in Japan tends to focus 
either on nightlife venues, such as bars, or on specific regions. In contrast, this study 
investigates the role of “queer spaces”—defined in the dissertation as “spaces made 
for and by LGBTQ+ people, existing outside of nightlife and non-commercial”—in 
shaping queer women and trans people’s sense of self. Through extensive fieldwork, 
Anna Tatton conducted 45 interviews with individuals who were either members or 
organizers of LGBTQ+ community spaces. In addition to interviews, she engaged in 
participant observation and collected data through open-ended survey questions and 
questionnaires. 
The project comprises a qualitative analysis of both qualitative and quantitative 
data gathered from 58 participants in total. Of these, 45 contributed through 
interviews, and 14 through open-question surveys (with some overlap). Among the 
participants, 42 were Japanese and 16 were non-Japanese, all of whom had been 
living in Japan for five years or more. The gender identities represented included 26 
cisgender women, 4 transgender women, 3 transgender men, and 8 non-binary or X-
gender individuals. Fifty-one participants identified as non-heterosexual. The 
remaining seven—those who identified as either heterosexual or unsure—were 
actively involved in community-building as parents of queer children or as allies. 
Their perspectives were deemed valuable and relevant to the study’s focus. 
The dissertation addresses several central research questions: What are the 
pressing issues facing LGBTQ+ individuals in Japan? What role do grassroots

initiatives and community spaces play in their lives? And what are the possibilities 
and limitations of online spaces as alternatives to in-person interaction? 
Findings from the research indicate a strong positive relationship between 
participation in community spaces and a heightened sense of well -being and self-
understanding among participants. The study also underscores the urgent need for 
improved accessibility and long-term sustainability of queer spaces to ensure they 
are inclusive and representative of the broader LGBTQ+ population.  
Moreover, the research highlights the resilience and adaptability of grassroots 
efforts in Japan in maintaining these spaces despite societal and systemic obstacles. 
Online platforms emerged as both a complementary and, at times, essential 
alternative to physical spaces—particularly when geographic distance posed a barrier 
or during the COVID-19 pandemic, when face-to-face gatherings were restricted. 
However, the study also reveals the limitations of digital interaction, including 
reduced intimacy and challenges in fostering deep, sustained connections.  
In sum, this dissertation provides a significant contribution to the understanding 
of how queer spaces function within the Japanese context. It emphasizes the critical 
role such spaces play in fostering belonging, identity formation, and collective 
agency among queer women and trans individuals. Additionally, it sheds light on the 
socio-cultural dynamics and unique challenges LGBTQ+ people face in Japan, while 
advocating for the continued development and support of non-commercial, inclusive 
spaces as essential to community well-being. 
 
論文審査結果の要旨 
 
アンナ・タットンの博士論文の面接試験は 2025 年 5 月 8 日に Zoom を通じて行われ
た。面接は 14:00 から 15:15 まで続き、候補者と 3 人の試験官が出席した。 
面接は候補者に論文を要約するように求めるところから始まった。アンナ・タットン
は、自身の研究の主要な目的と貢献を簡潔に概説し、次のように述べた。「[アンナ・タ
ットンの実際の発言が利用可能になったら挿入]。」委員会は、革新的なアプローチと方
法論的厳密性のゆえにタットンの論文を賞賛し、さらに日本の農村と都市の両方で、多
様な研究参加者を対象とする広範なフィールドワークを行ったことを長所とみなした。
委員会は、質的研究におけるそのような地理的広がりは稀であり評価されるべきもので
あると指摘した。

特に遠隔地域の非商業的クィアスペースに注目していることを指摘した。彼は、こうし
た空間がクィアの帰属意識を育む役割と影響を明確にするために重要な貢献をしてい
ることをこの研究の長所とみなした。 
委員会もこの評価に賛同し、本論文が日本におけるクィアの空間実践を理解する上
で重要な貢献をしていることを強調した。しかし、彼らはまた、修正が必要な誤字やテ
キストのフォーマットや表現の不一致など、いくつかの欠点を指摘した。  
ボンディ教授と加藤教授は、「調査結果と分析」と題された第 5 章の再構成を求めた。
彼らは、章をテーマごとに整理された 2 つの別々の章に分けることを提案した。この再
構成は、議論される幅広いトピックを体系的に整理し、章の読みやすさと一貫性を高め
るのに役立つであろう。 
もう一つの重要な提案は、論文がジェンダー・セクシュアリティ研究や社会学などの
既存の学問分野にどのように挑戦しまたは貢献するのかを明確にすることであった。著
者は、現在の学術的議論に直接関与し、批評することによって、フィールド調査のデー

最後の、あまり批判的ではないが価値のある提案事項は、参加者の言語使用—特に「ク
ィア」や「コミュニティ」などの日本語の用語と英語の外来語の使用—をより詳細に検
討することであった。言語が安全の感覚をどのように構築しまた伝えるかの分析は、さ
らなる洞察を提供するであろう。本論文は、日本でのクィアな空間の実践を調査したイ
ギリス人の研究者によるものなので、その視点はこの分野に特有の貢献をする可能性が
ある。 
全体として、審査委員会はアンナ・タットンに対し、日本における LGBTQ+研究の
分野への独創的で時宜を得た貢献を行ったことについて高く評価する。彼女の論文は高

Anna Tatton’s Ph.D. dissertation defence took place on May 8, 2025, via Zoom. 
The session lasted from 14:00 to 15:15 and was attended by the candidate and the 
three examiners. 
The defence began with a request for the candidate to summarize her dissertation. 
Anna Tatton briefly outlined the key aims and contributions of her work, stating: 
“[Insert Anna Tatton's actual statement here once available].”  
The committee praised Tatton’s dissertation for its innovative approach and 
methodological rigor. They commended her for conducting extensive fieldwork 
across both rural and urban regions of Japan, engaging a diverse range of research 
participants. The committee noted that such geographical breadth in qualitative 
research is rare and worthy of recognition. 
Tatton conducted 45 interviews with community members across various locations 
in Japan, including (in alphabetical order): Ehime, Hiroshima, Kagoshima, Kyoto, 
Nagoya, Osaka, Sapporo, Saitama, Shimane, Tokushima, and Tokyo. The committee 
expressed particular appreciation for her detailed and careful documentation of 
community group events and personal narratives collected over years of fieldwork.  
Despite the overall positive assessment, the committee identified areas for 
improvement. One key recommendation was to provide a clearer conceptual 
framework, particularly regarding the central term “community.” Although Tatton 
included definitions for several key terms early in the dissertation, the absence of a 
robust definition of “community” weakens the theoretical foundation. Drawing on 
existing scholarly definitions would strengthen her ability to situate the work within 
the broader literature and contribute more critically to academic discourse. 
Professor Ammour-Mayeur, Tatton’s primary supervisor, emphasized the 
pioneering nature of the dissertation, noting that it is the first in Japan to focus on 
“Queer Belongingness: Exploring the Role of Physical Spaces for Queer Women and 
Trans People in Japan,” with particular attention to non-commercial queer spaces in 
remote regions. He commended the work for its significant contribution to clarifying 
the role and impact of such spaces in fostering queer belongingness.

The committee echoed this praise, highlighting the dissertation’s important 
contribution to understanding queer spatial practices in Japan. However, they also 
pointed out several shortcomings, including typographical errors and inconsistencies 
in textual formatting and expression that need correction. 
Professors Bondy and Kato recommended restructuring Chapter 5, titled “Findings 
and Analysis.” They suggested dividing the chapter into two separate chapters 
organized by thematic concepts. This reorganization would help systematize the wide 
range of topics discussed and enhance the chapter’s readability and coherence.  
Another substantive suggestion was to clarify how the dissertation challenges or 
contributes to existing academic disciplines, such as Gender and Sexuality Studies or 
Sociology. By directly engaging with and critiquing current academic discussions, 
the author could more clearly communicate both the novelty of the field data and the 
originality of her analytical perspective. 
A final, less critical but still valuable recommendation was to more closely 
examine participants’ language use—specifically the use of Japanese terms and 
English loanwords such as “queer” and “community.” An analysis of how language 
constructs or communicates feelings of safety would offer an additional layer of 
insight. Given that the dissertation is a study of queer spatial practices in Japan 
conducted by a British researcher, this perspective could make a distinctive 
contribution to the field. 
Overall, the examination committee commends Anna Tatton for an original and 
timely contribution to the field of LGBTQ+ studies in Japan. Her dissertation 
demonstrates a high level of scholarly engagement, methodological rigor, and 
sensitivity to the complexities of identity, space, and community. The committee 
recognizes the significance of this work—not only for its academic merit but also for 
its potential impact on broader discussions around inclusion, visibility, and support 
for marginalized communities. Once the requested revisions are included, the thesis 
will stand as a valuable and innovative addition to the interdisciplinary literature on 
gender, sexuality, and sociocultural studies.

「ポリアモリー」概念における人種主義と植民地主義 
―モノガミー制度上でのポリガミーの排除に着目
して

「ポリアモリー」とは「複数の愛」を意味する、1990年代に米国で生み出され
た造語であり、一般に同意の上で複数の人と恋愛・性愛関係を結ぶ実践を指す言
葉として知られている。本稿では、ポリアモリーが米国で支持を広げつつあるに
も関わらず、一夫多妻制や、一妻多夫制のような「複婚」を意味するポリガミー
が周縁化されるという対照的な状況を踏まえ、「ポリアモリー」概念を人種主義
と植民地主義の観点から批判的に考察することを試みた。特に、ポリアモリー
の「倫理的」な側面に 注目し、そこで重視される個人の主体性の尊重や自由と
いった、しばしば普遍的とされる価値観が、人種主義や植民地主義、ヘテロノー
マティヴィティを内包する「一夫一妻制」としてのモノガミーの優越を担保する
ために動員されていることを歴史的な文脈から論証し、「倫理的」なノンモノガ
ミーとしてのポリアモリーは、モノガミーの構造上の特権性をおびやかさない形
で構築されていることを検証した。
まず、第1章では、ポリアモリーがモノガミー制度に対抗する 1960年代の性
解放の文化であるノンモノガミー（一対一の婚姻関係に縛られない恋愛・性愛
関係）を起源に、その後1980年代の保守派のバックラッシュを受けて「倫理的」
なノンモノガミーとして再構築されるなかで大衆化していった、米国にて発達し
た恋愛・性愛関係のあり方であることを示した。つまり、関係するすべての当事
者を尊重した上で行う、制度上のモノガマスな婚姻制度 にとらわれない「自由」
な恋愛、性愛実践としてポリアモリーは提示されている。しかし、ポリアモリー
の「倫理性」は、関係性へのコミットメントや関係性の長期的な持続などの保守
的な家族観を取り込むことでも担保されており、また浮気やスウィンギング、ポ
リガミーといった他のノンモノガミー実践と区別される形でポリアモリーが定義
されているような、ポリアモリーの排除的で保守的な側面も示した。
第2章では私的領域における個人の自由を重視するゆえに、すでに法的に周縁

化されているにも関わらず、法的な包摂に対して消極的なポリアモリー・コミュ
ニティの傾向に焦点を当てた。そして、この法的承認に対する忌避感は伝統的な
モノガミー結婚に取り込まれることに対する嫌悪感から生じており、モノガミー
の特権性自体を解体することを意識していないことを論じた。
続く第3章では「ポリアモリー」が大衆化する一方で、「ポリガミー」が依然
として全米で犯罪化されているという状況を起点に、ポリアモリーはポリガミー
を人種化して排除してきたモノガミーの植民地主義、西洋（白人）中心主義に迎
合していると論じた。ここで、ポリアモリーの倫理性を担保する、私的領域にお
ける個人の選択の「自由」がまさにホモナショナル、ホモノーマティヴな言説
においても運用されていることを示し、ここで強調される個人の選択の「自由」
が、個人のポジショナリティや特権性と不可分な関係にあるにも関わらず、その
差異を無視した形で提示されることが問題だと論じた。そして第4章では、以上
の議論を踏まえて、ドラマ『カンバセーションズ・ウィズ・フレンズ』における
恋愛表象が倫理的な「ポリアモリー」か、倫理的でない「不倫 /浮気」か、とい
う形で倫理性をめぐり議論されている点を検証した。
よって本稿では、「ポリアモリー」は「一対一のカップル規範」に抗っている
としても、西洋近代に人種主義と植民地主義、そして異性愛規範に基づき特権的
に構築されたモノガミー制度を、脱歴史化して前提におい た上で、そのモノガ
ミー制度のもと維持される「倫理観」に基づいてその正当性を主張するという点
で、モノガミー制度と、それが支持する人種主義や植民地主義、 異性愛規範に取
り込まれていることを明らかにするものである。なお、本研究は主に米国の動向
を対象にしており、日本のポリアモリー・アクティヴィズムはまた異なる様相で
あると考えられる。
