The expression of motion events in Japanese L1 narratives : a developmental approach
近年,様々な言語や文化で使用されている移動表現に関する研究が活発に行われている。本研究では,Frog, where are you?(Mayer, 1969)という絵本を用いて,子どもと大人が母語である日本語で物語を作成する際の移動表現に注目した。その結果,日本語母語話者には,動詞枠付け言語(verb-framed language)で特徴的な経路動詞や後置語句を使用する傾向がみられ,衛星枠付言語(satellite-framed language)で一般的に用いられる様態動詞の使用は少なかった。ただし,擬音語・擬態語,副詞表現を使うなど他の方法によって様態描写が付加されていた。また,軌跡の表現もあまり精緻化されていなかった。一方で,静的な終点に焦点を当てるなど,静的な場所の描写が多かった。これらの結果は,動詞枠付け言語における移動表現について報告されている傾向を多く反映している。このように,母語である日本語のツールを使ってナラティブを作ることで,子どもであっても,言語に適した修辞的なスタイルを実現させつつ,“thinking for speaking”を行うことができる。In recent years, there has been a considerable amount of research on the topic of expressions of motion across languages and cultures. This study focuses on the expression of motion in children and adults creating stories in their first language, Japanese. Oral and written narratives were elicited by using the wordless picture book, Frog, where are you? (Mayer, 1969). The results show that the Japanese narrators tended to use Path verbs, as is common in verb-framed languages, instead of Manner verbs, which are common in satellite-framed languages. However, manner was added in other ways, such as by using onomatopoeia / mimesis and adverbial expressions. Furthermore, trajectories were not highly elaborated. Instead, there were many descriptions of static locations, such as those focusing on the static end-point. These findings reflect many of the tendencies reported for expressions of motion in verb-framed languages. Using the tools offered to them by their first language, Japanese, to create stories, even child narrators demonstrate a rhetorical style which is language-appropriate and reflects “thinking for speaking” (Slobin, 1996a, p. 76).departmental bulletin pape
Exporting culture : diffusion process of Japanese food product in the U.S market
Based on international marketing theories, this paper analyzes product diffusion processes of Japanese food companies in the U.S market. In recent years, Japanese food companies have been rapidly expanding overseas as the domestic market matures. However, the food industry is highly culturally sensitive and tastes vary largely depending on the market. Therefore, food export has an element to export culture and therefore it is assumed to be difficult to expand without common cultural background. This paper attempt to reveal the diffusion process of Japanese food product in the U.S. market by analyzing standardization-adaptation marketing strategies of each stage in the product life cycle. Two research questions are raised in this paper. One is “how are Japanese food companies doing standardization-adaptation marketing in the US market?”, and the other is “how is the marketing strategy changing according to the stage of advancement?”To answer these questions, this paper reviewed existing studies on global standardization-adaptation theories and those strategies in the food industry. The standardization-adaptation debate has yet to produce a logic of these simultaneous achievement and balance between them. Furthermore, in the case analysis of Japanese food companies in previous research, all of them were limited to individual case analysis, and there was no research that considered the standardization-adaptation strategy from the comparative analysis.In order to analyze product diffusion processes of Japanese food companies in the U.S. market, this paper conducted a comparative case study on marketing strategies of three Japanese food companies, Ajinomoto, Itoen, and Kikkoman. Their marketing strategies are analyzed from the perspective of the five stage model of product life cycle. Through analyses, effective marketing strategies in each stage of product life cycle while Japanese food companies expanded their the U.S market share were revealed.Theoretical implication of this paper suggested more generalizable logics on marketing strategies of food companies pursuing simultaneous achievement of standardization and adaptation in the US market with a new dynamic analytical framework. As a practical implication, this paper suggested a methodology on “exporting culture”, which was considered to be difficult due to the high regionality of taste.departmental bulletin pape
Insights from the revision of teacher training system in Thailand : what kind of competency should secondary Japanese language teachers possess?
本研究の目的はタイの新しい教員養成制度のゴールと制度的枠組みを明らかにし、日本語教員養成への影響を探ることである。タイでは教育学部での教員養成が 5 年から 4年課程に移行した。新制度で求められる「専門職としての教員」のコンピテンシーは従来と異なるのか、どのようにして質を担保するのか、日本語教員養成課程はどう対応しているかを探るため、タイ語の公的資料の分析及び現地での調査研究を行った。結果、求められるコンピテンシーは大きくは変わらず、むしろ実習の重要性が増していたこと、学位認定や検定試験等を通してその質を同程度に担保しようとしていたこと、日本語教員養成課程では日本語学習時間が大幅に減少するものの、専門職としての教員養成が重視されていたことが明らかになった。公的機関からの派遣等でタイの中等日本語教育に関わる日本人は増加している。本研究の成果は今後の協働や支援のあり方を考える上で重要なものとなる。The purpose of this study is to identify the goals and framework of the new teacher training system in Thailand and to investigate its effect on Japanese language teacher training. Research questions are as follows: 1. Are the needed competencies of “teachers as professionals” different from those in the past? 2. How will the quality be ensured? 3. How does the Japanese language teaching program respond to these changes? The findings of the survey showed the following points: 1. Competencies remained relatively the same, but the importance of practical training increased; 2. Through official licensing exams and degree certification, the same level of quality was guaranteed; 3. Although the time spent studying Japanese was reduced in the Japanese language teaching program, the emphasis was on training teachers as professionals.
