FP-25-08 Older Adult Cohabiting and Married Couples

As gray divorce has increased over the past few decades (Brown, Lin, & Julian, 2024), many older adults have chosen cohabitation over remarriage when repartnering (Brown et al., 2019). In 2000, fewer than 1 million older men and women cohabited (Brown, Lee, & Bulanda, 2006). By 2017, this number had grown to approximately 4 million (Stepler, 2017) and reached 4.6 million by 2022 (Julian & Brown, forthcoming). This rise in later-life cohabitation reflects a broad shift in relationship patterns, with cohabitation operating as an alternative to remarriage in later life (Brown & Wright, 2017). Using data from the 2023 American Community Survey, this Family Profile examines older adult couples, defined as those with at least one partner who is aged 50 or older. We provide estimates of cohabiting and married household heads, explore marital history, and assess educational homogamy among cohabiting and married couples. Additionally, we analyze average age differences between partners in these unions. This is an update of FP-22-16 (Julian, 2022)

A Case Study on Institutional Response to Strike Activity and its Relationship to Strike Length

Between 2022 and 2023, labor union and strike activity on college campuses increased to represent over 35,000 new workers, with many of these workers being graduate students (Herbert, 2023). As strike activity has continued into 2024 and beyond, it is necessary to understand how institutions responded to strikes to consider how their response may impact strike length. In this paper, I utilize the University of Michigan’s (U-M) response to the Graduate Employees organization strike of 2023 as an instrumental case study to explore the relationship between institutional response to strike activity and strike length. I use Cohen and colleagues (1991) theory of organized anarchy to review publicly available documents published by U-M to find instances of problematic goals, unclear technology, and fluid participation in decision making that may result in increased strike duration. I use the findings of this case study to suggest a path forward for institutions who find themselves on the brink of a labor strike

Analyzing Northwest Ohio Industries and Utilizing the SHAPE program to Increase Sustainable Practices

The purpose of this project is to dive deeper into the corporate perspective on sustainability and why manufacturing companies should take action on such an important topic. Is there a true balance for businesses between increasing profits and reducing waste? Why should businesses care about being branded as a sustainable company? What efforts do companies need to take to truly be branded as “sustainable?” These are questions that drove the research and development of this project. After looking into these guiding questions, this project develops a program to help monitor and measure the successful sustainability practices that various Northwest Ohio industries take part in

At the Outset: An Exploration of Jazz and The Music Video

This project centers around the creation of an original jazz composition and music video for the purpose of filling the gap in visual media used to promote jazz music. The history of music in film is briefly explored, as well as the history of jazz in film and music videos. Jazz is found to have been intertwined with film from the first widely available sound films, but the connection has since dwindled, with only a few modern jazz compositions having widely available music videos. An original jazz tune, “At the Outset,” was created for this project. The details of the planning and composition are described, with the tune featuring modern jazz influences and centering around individual improvisation. The planning and creation of a music video for the tune are also detailed. Practical processes, such as storyboarding, audio recording, and filming, are discussed. A link to the final video product is included, along with storyboards and a full score for the composition. Thematic and structural considerations in the planning of the music video are discussed in detail. The video is meant to follow the structure of a typical jazz tune, with each musical event accompanied by a new setting in the film. Costumes and imagery are discussed, with design that reflects the improvisatory nature of the music. Future research regarding the effectiveness and marketability of the music video in jazz is also discussed

Barriers to the Implementation of the Amsterdam 2022 Statement in the Secondary School Setting

Introduction: Athletic trainers are reasonably expected to evolve their concussion management protocols to better align themselves with the recommendations found in the Amsterdam 2022 Statement. Secondary school athletic trainers may lack the time, training, or resources to actualize these recommendations within their protocols. The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers associated with the implementation of the Amsterdam 2022 Statement recommendations in the secondary school setting. Methods: 89 secondary school ATs (44 males, 45 females) in the NATA District 1 and District 2 regions were provided with an electronic survey using Qualtrics (Qualtrics, Provo, UT), consisting of 6 demographic items (i.e., sex, race/ethnicity, initial entry-level AT education, highest level of education, years of AT experience, and state of current practice) and 11 items related to details on their currently existing concussion management protocols, their familiarity with the new recommendations in the Amsterdam 2022 Statement, and their ability and willingness to update their concussion management protocols as needed. Results: Only about half of the athletic trainers (52.11%) in this study agreed that their current protocols aligned themselves with the latest recommendations despite these recommendations being publicly available to the sports medicine community for over a year at the time of this study. Reported barriers to implementation ranged from a lack of support from relevant stakeholders to a lack of awareness or resources pertaining to the use of the SCAT6 or the new RTS progressions. Conclusion: Organizational administrators can further facilitate the implementation process by providing practical support, especially as it relates to environmental, policy, and financial resources. In addition to the provision of support, continuing education on the topic of SRC needs to remain a focal point in the athletic training profession to reduce the delay that exists between the discovery of well-researched best practice recommendations to the utilization of these recommendations in active practice

Nuanced Relationships between Teacher Collaboration and Job Satisfaction

This explanatory correlational study examined nuanced relationships between teacher collaboration and teacher job satisfaction in two school districts in Illinois. A total of N=231 K-12 teachers responded to established measures of teacher job satisfaction and teacher collaboration from the 2018 Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS). Structural equation modeling revealed a small positive relationship between one form of collaboration among teachers—professional collaboration in lessons—and job satisfaction with the profession specifically. However, two other forms of collaboration, namely teacher exchange and coordination and professional learning community collaboration, were statistically unrelated to teachers’ satisfaction with both the workplace and the profession after conditioning on professional collaboration in lessons. Limitations, implications, and future directions for research are discussed

Mentoring of Para-Athletes and Its Impact on the Preparation Process for the 2020 Paralympic Games

Many factors contribute to successful athletic performance, and athletes have reported that mentors have played a vital role in their athletic performance as well as their personal development. Mentoring relationships can have a transformative impact on people’s lives, and mentored athletes, either by peers or coaches, have higher levels of dedication, confidence, and individual performance. Having a mentor is critically important during unexpected challenges in life such as was the case with the extraordinary uncertainty for para-athletes during the postponement of the 2020 Paralympic Games. The purpose of this study was to explore how mentoring aided para-athletes’ navigating the challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings revealed that para-athletes from the United States who were preparing for the 2020 Paralympics had three primary sources of mentoring support: coach-athlete mentoring, peer mentoring, and social mentoring. Three themes were also derived from the interviews: (a) encouragement, (b) accountability, and (c) motivation to train. There is a need for para-athlete mentoring, and understanding mentoring support during challenging times in athlete development can be critical to their athletic performance

Health Tourism Facility Use of Digital Marketing and AI

The proliferation of social media platforms has fundamentally reshaped patient acquisition strategies in health and wellness tourism, creating unprecedented opportunities for providers to engage with international patients across diverse digital channels. From boutique clinics in Mexico offering specialized dental, cosmetic, and bariatric procedures, to destination medspas providing aesthetic treatments, and even comprehensive global hospitals like the Mayo Clinic, healthcare providers are leveraging multi-platform social media strategies to attract and inform potential medical travelers. Research indicates that these digital marketing approaches now encompass a sophisticated array of content formats, including short-form video on TikTok, professional imagery on Instagram, long-form educational content on YouTube, and community- 44 building interactions on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter). The strategic use of social media transcends traditional marketing, providing patients with visual testimonials, procedural previews, physician introductions, and real-time engagement that demystifies medical travel experiences. According to recent studies, 68% of medical tourists now consult social media platforms as a primary or secondary source of information before making cross-border healthcare decisions, with visual and video content showing the highest engagement rates. In addition, artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used by these organizations to reach more patients. This digital transformation enables healthcare facilities to overcome geographical barriers, build trust through transparent communication, and create targeted marketing campaigns that speak directly to specific patient demographics seeking international medical treatments
