    A Comprehensive Review on Sugarcane Bagasse in Food Packaging: Properties, Applications, and Future Prospects

    This comprehensive review examines the potential of sugarcane bagasse as a sustainable alternative in the food packaging industry. The study analyses recent research on bagasse-based packaging materials, focusing on their composition, mechanical properties, biodegradability, and applications. Sugarcane bagasse, primarily composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, offers promising characteristics for developing eco-friendly packaging solutions. The review highlights the enhancement of material properties through the incorporation of cellulose nanofibers and the formation of bio-composites. Various applications in rigid and flexible packaging, as well as active and intelligent packaging systems, are explored. The study also addresses challenges such as raw material variability, processing complexities, and limitations in barrier properties, even as bagasse-based materials demonstrate significant advantages in terms of biodegradability and environmental impact. The study identifies key areas for future research, including standardization of processing methods, improvement of barrier properties, and ensuring food safety compliance. Additionally, the review discusses the potential economic implications of adopting bagasse-based packaging materials and the need for life cycle assessments to fully understand their environmental impact. The integration of bagasse-derived components in advanced packaging technologies, such as antimicrobial and antioxidant systems, is also examined. Overall, this review underscores the significant potential of sugarcane bagasse in revolutionising food packaging, while emphasising the need for continued research and development to overcome existing limitations and optimise its properties for widespread industrial adoption

    For the First Time on the UASVM-CN Campus? A Web Application that Assists in the Identification of Classrooms

    The campus of the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca (UASVM-CN) is known as a green oasis in a busy town. The campus area is »26 ha and finding certain locations here can be challenging for new students or visitors. Overall, the evolution of technologies, smartphones, tablets, facilitate new software approaches to classical situations such as finding a classroom on a huge campus. The main aim of our research is to design and deploy a web application that assists visitors in finding a classroom on the campus. The design and development of the web application are based on ArcGIS online, i.e. a GIS that allows the transformation of spatial data into web maps and web application. The geospatial data are conveyed into thematic maps of the footprints for 2 of the buildings on the campus: ICHAT and Horticulture. The geodatabase used for these buildings was enriched with specific data needed for classrooms’ characterisation. Web application allows to fix the user’s position on the campus map and, using the search options, the map will zoom to the building where the classroom is located, emphasizing its position on the surveying plan

    Past, Present and Future Premises on Technical Approaches Regrading the Afforestation of Lands Outside the Forest Fund in the Apuseni Mountains

    The lands afforested outside the forest fund are, mostly, degraded or in the process of degradation, and to a small extent they are abandoned agricultural lands or on which shelter-belts are installed. A series of studies and technical guidelines elaborated for the afforestation of some areas in Romania, which include mountain and hilly areas from the period 1950-1990, were analyzed, in parallel with those drawn up today. Site-mapping methodology refers to the sampling of climatic factors from nearby weather stations, the characterization of existing soils and vegetation. The afforestation of degraded lands in the Apuseni Mountains began towards the end of the 19th century and three periods can be distinguished: 1890 - 1918; 1918 - 1944 and 1944 - 1989. As species used, priority was: Scots pine, Black pine, Larch, Strobe pine and Spruce. After 1989, afforestation was carried out with difficulty, they were carried out according to a technical project drawn up by specialists in the field. In the present paper, some research developed since the 50s until the 90s were analyzed, these being compared with the current site-mapping works, establishing the main differences between them, and based on the differences, the directions of future technologies were established

    The main purpose of this paper is to analyze the methods of reducing water pollution due to phytosanitary treatments. Thus, the sources of surface water pollution with plant protection products are divided into point sources, which mainly refer to the handling of these products within the agricultural farm, as well as diffuse sources, which mainly refer to the processes related to rainwater runoff from the land surface and soil erosion and due to drift at the time of application of the plant protection products. Methods of reducing surface water pollution are also analyzed, addressing both technological and legislative aspects.       &nbsp

    Functional Plant Substrates in Sourdough Fermentation: Hops, Kombucha, and Grape Pomace

    Sourdough fermentation represents a cornerstone of traditional and modern baking, offering enhanced flavour, texture, and nutritional benefits. With the increasing demand for sustainable and functional food products, plant-derived substrates have emerged as transformative tools in artisanal and industrial bread production. These ingredients address critical challenges such as microbial stability, shelf life, and sensory quality while contributing unique biofunctional properties like antioxidant activity and antimicrobial effects. Despite their promise, challenges such as bitterness from hops, phenolic inhibition in grape pomace, and the scalability of kombucha starters underscore the need for precise optimization strategies. Emerging biotechnological approaches, including encapsulation, synthetic biology, and genetic engineering of microbial strains, are explored as solutions to maximize the efficiency and consistency of these substrates. This review provides a roadmap for integrating plant-derived fermentation substrates into sustainable baking practices, with implications for meeting consumer preferences and advancing functional food innovation

    Development and Characterisation of a New Product Based on Kelp Powder

    Seaweed has been consumed for hundreds of years due to its biologically active properties, particularly its high antioxidant activity. It is low in fat and a good source of fiber and minerals, and is considered nearly a complete protein. The new product, in addition to the kelp powder content, is distinguished by the addition of Lactobacillus paracasei culture and spelt flour. This study highlights the development and characterization of a novel kelp powder-based bakery product. Three experimental variants (B1 - muffin with 5% kelp powder, B2 - muffin with 10% kelp powder, and B3 - muffin with 15% kelp powder) were comparatively analysed. The muffins were subjected to physicochemical, microbiological, and spectrophotometric analyses. The finished product was monitored over a period of 5 days, stored at room temperature. The acceptability of the new probiotic muffin assortment was evaluated with a sample of 137 participants, mostly consumers of bakery products. The results of the analyses showed that the muffins exhibited microbiological characteristics within the allowed limits for up to 3 days of storage at room temperature, after which an increase in the total number of yeasts and molds was observed. The new product is high in bioactive compounds but low in fat due to the addition of brown seaweed

    There is a growing global trend in the consumption of cultivated medicinal and aromatic plants and an increasing demand for medicinal plants for the production of herbal medicines, health products, dietary supplements, and cosmetic products. The raw plant material from medicinal plant crops is insufficient to meet the needs of this industry. There is a preference for cultivated plant material because most pharmaceutical companies prefer raw materials that meet the required quality standards. Therefore, expanding the cultivation of medicinal plant and introducing new species into cultivation is becoming an important objective. These efforts are complemented by other advantages of cultivation (e.g., modern mechanized agricultural techniques, irrigation, fertilization, and mechanized harvesting). Molecular characterization of the species Dracocephalum moldavica, was focused on analysing the genetic structure of a cultivated plant population. Genetic analysis can provide important data regarding intra- and interpopulation genetic polymorphism, closely correlated with the adaptive capacity of the species to different pedo-climatic conditions, as well as the biosynthetic capacity of pharmacologically active compounds. This enables the accurate identification and selection of new valuable genotypes. Molecular analysis can be performed using DNA molecular markers, among which SSR (simple sequence repeats) and ISSR (inter simple sequence repeats) markers are frequently used due to their high reproducibility, relatively low cost, and avoidance of radioactivity (as is the case with other molecular markers). Daily life has become deeply dependent on these systems. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are part of the larger family of information systems, with the particularity of using spatially referenced data. Thus, databases, which form the foundation of any information system, are enriched with geographic references, meaning the mapping of represented realities. This paper presents the implementation of a Geographic Information System (GIS) for planning and managing the water network in Mitocu Dragomirnei Commune, Suceava County. Given the increasing need for access to quality potable water, the use of a GIS offers significant benefits in terms of planning efficiency and precision of infrastructure

    Effect of Rhizobium Bacteria Inoculation Rate on Yield and Yield Components of Field Pea (Pisum sativum L.) at Awi Zone, Ethiopia

    Field peas (Pisum sativum L.) is economically a significant crop in Ethiopia. The yield of field peas in our country has fell due to poor management practices of Bio fertilizer rates usage. Three rates of bio fertilizer (0, 250 and 500g ha-1) were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Number of nodules per plant, Pod numbers per plant, plant height, and effective nodule number of productive tillers, total biomass yield, grain yield, and straw yield were recorded and significantly affected by bio-fertilizer rate application. The determined or the highest grain yield (2671kg ha-1) was recorded from 250 g ha-1 bio-fertilizer rate. Almost 250g ha-1 bio fertilizer rates were superior for the research area. Nevertheless, more investigation has to be done under different locations and seasons to come up with practical recommendations correlated to the current study

    The Variability of Quantitative Traits Parameters of Facultative Wheat Affected by Sowing Time

    Facultative wheat can be an appropriate alternative for maintained high grain yield and quality in these changing conditions. Three alternative wheat genotypes were tested in a field condition for their agronomic traits- spike length, spike weight, number of grains/spike and weight of grains/spike, qualitative indices- grain protein content, wet gluten content and Zeleny index; and rheological parameters- dough extensibility, dough tenacity, deformation energy, as effect of different sowing date, autumn sowing respectively spring sowing conditions. The reaction of studied genotypes to different sowing date regarding the morphological traits shows that genotype and genotype- sowing date interaction has a significant influence on the studied traits. Regarding the reaction of individual genotype, the variability coefficient having low and medium values (6.54 % by Ciprian variety to 15.5 % for Taisa, in spring sowing conditions) in case of spike length trait, respectively medium and high values for the other characters studied, significant differences being observed between genotypes. Superior values for qualitative and rheological indices were recorded under spring sowing conditions for all genotypes, which means that the accumulation of biochemical compounds is favored. Also, the spring sowing conditions has a positive effect on relationship between the main yield components of studied facultative wheat.         &nbsp
