    Uses Of The Genus Lavandula For Human Health: A Literature Review

    Traditionally, lavender is believed to have a variety of therapeutic and curative properties, from inducing relaxation to treating parasitic infections, burns, insect bites and spasm. There is growing evidence to suggest that lavender oil may be an effective drug in the treatment of many neurological disorders. In manufacturing, lavender is used in pharmaceutical products and as a fragrance ingredient in soaps, cosmetics, perfumes, potpourri, and decorations. Several animal and human investigations suggest anxiolytic, mood stabilizing, sedative, analgesic, anticonvulsant and neuroprotective properties for lavender. Lavandula is commonly used for anxiety, stress, and insomnia. It is also used for depression, dementia, pain after surgery, and many other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support many of these uses. Lavender can also be used for decorative purposes, indoors or outdoors, due to its anti-insecticidal properties, but also due to the beauty of this wonderful flower

    Studies Regarding the Attack of Some Invasive Species on Trees and Shrubs from Landscape Arrangements in Cluj-Napoca Municipality

    Species of ornamental trees and shrubs are frequently attacked by invasive species recently introduced in Romania. Of these, the species Metcalfa pruinosa Say. (Hemiptera: Flatidae), native to the United States, is widespread. It is a polyphagous species. The attack is manifested in the leaves causing damage to the aesthetic value of the attacked plants. During the 2020-2021, the species of trees and shrubs attacked by Metcalfa pruinosa Say were identified and the frequency and intensity of the attack was determined. The studies were carried out in the spaces see and on the street alignments in Cluj-Napoca. Observations were made on all plant species to determine the frequency of the attacked leaves. The species we reported on 47 species that systematically belong to 23 families. Metcalfa pruinosa Say. was reported on most plants, and the most attacked plants were: Ligustrum vulgare L., Fraxinus excelsior L., Robinia pseudoacacia L., Aesculus hippocastanum L., Acer platanoides L., Buxus sempervirens L., Thuja accidentalis L

    Phyllopertha horticola Linné - Pest in blueberry plantations in the Mărişel area (Cluj County)

    Phyllopertha horticola Linné (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) is one of the most common phytophagous beetles in Central Europe. In 2020 the blueberry growers from the Mărişel area reported the presence of a new beetle that attacked the fruit’s flowers and leaves. The species was identified at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca as the garden chafer. In the following year, the plants attacked by the garden beetle were monitored in the blueberry plantation in the Mărişel area. For monitoring the garden chafer, three rows of land were randomly selected in each plot with intervals of 20 plants per row. Each plant was analyzed individually and the number of adult beetles reported on the plant was noted. The observations were made between June and July 2021. In the Elliot variety, the share of plants reported with adults of Phyllopertha horticola Linné was between 50% and 60%, the average being 55%. Regarding the maximum number of adults/plant, it was between 6 specimens (raw 1) and 9 adults/plant (raw 2). In the Bluecrop variety, the share of plants with adults of the monitored species was between 10% and 45%, with an average per variety of 25%

    Health Benefits of Crassulaceae Species Frequent in Romania

    A family of succulent plants with a nearly global range and adaptation to xeric ecological conditions is the Crassulaceae. There are roughly 1500 species in this family, most of which are used as decorative plants or as part of the design of green roofs. Their pharmacological and therapeutic effects, which we list here, include analgesic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, antibacterial, and anticancer, were recently emphasized by biochemical analyses. Several researches have demonstrated the presence of the following chemical substances with biological and pharmacological action: flavonoids, sterols, ascorbic acid, trace elements, hydrocarbons, bufadienolides, etc. This paper aims to provide a short overview of the known therapeutic effects of the species from the Crassulaceae family which are frequently met in Romania. The studies can serve as a prelude to the application of these properties in the context of alternative medicine, while also opening up new research avenues for the advances of phytotherapy

In efforts to discover new strategies for neurodegenerative therapy, natural herbal sources products have aroused interest in the research community and in the pharmaceutical industry for their neuroprotective activity. Mixtures or extracts of natural products might have advantages compared to individual natural compounds, as they have multiple simultaneous target approaches, which could be a novel treatment option for neurodegenerative, considering the complexity of its pathophysiology. This review mainly focuses in vitro and in vivo trials of natural aqueous extract and compiles information on their mechanism of actions

    The research aimed the study of an invasive species that has recently appeared in our country, Corythucha ciliata Say (plane tiger or lacy plane bedbug) (Hemiptera, Tingidae). Knowing this pest is very important in order to control it, in order to keep the appearance of the parks pleasant and clean. The insect is an aggressive pest of plane trees (Platanus spp.), which harms their leaves, leading to premature defoliation. The aims of this research were: identifying and monitoring of Corythucha ciliata Say populations; observations on the host plants in the analyzed space; tracking the biological cycle of the species Corythucha ciliata Say and the extent of pest. Following research conducted in 2020-2021, the invasive species Corythucha ciliata Say, was identified in 4 locations in Transylvania, on two species of plane trees, Platanus occidentalis Linné and Platanus x acerifolia Willdenow. In the ecological conditions of Cluj-Napoca (Cluj County), the numerical density of the pest on the plane leaves was of maximum 30 adults/leaf and 63 larvae/leaf. Concerning the biological cycle, it was found that, in the temperate-continental climate of Cluj-Napoca, the species has 2 generations per year

    What people commonly call wormwood, the scientific world calls this medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium L. A commonly known species of the genus Artemisia is Artemisia absinthium L., with a rightful place in the history of medicine. Globally, there is a growing interest in identifying those natural antioxidant compounds that can be used safely in the food industry and preventive medicine. It is no coincidence that this medicinal and aromatic plant has attracted the attention of history. Due to the bioactive compounds with beneficial effects on human health, effects demonstrated or still under study, this plant did not remain in the shade. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the studies conducted so far that demonstrate the beneficial effects of Artemisia absinthium L. extracts and essential oil. In addition to the already known therapeutic effects, we can mention the following: stimulating digestion and appetite, anthelmintic, antibacterial and antifungal activity, antioxidant, neuroprotective, immuno-stimulating, cytotoxic, hepatoprotective. All the above creates the intrigue on which the evaluation of compounds that can be used in the pharmaceutical and food industries will be performed

    At the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Cluj-Napoca there is an old and valuable tradition regarding the knowledge and valorification of medicinal and aromatic plants. In this institution, a Medicinal Plant Resort was established (in 1904), with activity until between the two world war period, being known and appreciated in the country and abroad. Starting with 1970 (50 years ago), the scientific researches in the field of medicinal plants were resumed at USAMV Cluj-Napoca, within the Phytotechnics department of this institution. The Cluj Department of Phytotechnics has carried out multi-annual research contracts with the Fundulea Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Department, since its establishment (in 1975) and has maintained scientific collaborations with the Faculty of Pharmacy from Cluj-Napoca, with Plafar Cluj etc. Since 1993, when The Hop and Medicinal Plants Culture Research Center was established at the Cluj Phytotechnics Department, the investigations in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants have diversified. Under the shield of this research center, since its establishment (in 1993), the journal "Hop and Medicinal Plants" is published, which publishes scientific papers on medicinal and aromatic plants, made at USAMV Cluj-Napoca and other institutions of research in the country and abroad. This paper presents the evolution of investigations in the field of medicinal and aromatic plants within USAMV Cluj-Napoca, highlighting the studies conducted from 1970 to the present. During this period (for five decades)8are presented the doctoral theses referring to medicinal and aromatic plants defended in USAMV Cluj-Napoca. Finally, the paper includes books of medicinal and aromatic plants developed and published by teachers from Phytotechnics in Cluj

    The Effects Of Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia L.) Powder On The Quality Characteristics Of Dark Bread

    This study was conducted to investigate the effects of bitter melon (Momordica charantia L.) powder on the dark bread quality characteristics. The bitter melon powder was blended with dark wheat flour at different levels: 1.5%, 2%, 2.5% and 3% for preparing bread samples. Physical-chemical, antioxidative, and sensory properties, were studied. By increasing bitter melon powder content in bread increased ash, protein, and fat content were recorded. With respect to the specific volume of the bread, a slightly decrease with the increased level of bitter melon powder was found, without affecting the quality characteristics of the bread. Also, the addition of BMP led to a decrease in the total carbohydrate content for dark bread with the 3% bitter melon powder. Moreover, the addition of 3% BMP registered a positive influence on the total phenolic content and on the antioxidant activity of bread. The nutritional and sensorial results of the present study demonstrated that 2.5% BMP could be added in the bread manufacturing without affecting the bread aftertaste, offering promising healthy and nutritious alternative to consumers

    Preliminary Research On Some Alchemilla vulgaris L. Medicinal Teas

    The flowering aerial parts of Alchemilla vulgaris (Rosaceae) are frequently used in the phytotherapy of some gynaecological, gastrointestinal and oral diseases. This study was performed in order to evaluate the quality of some Romanian commercial medicinal teas containing Alchemillae herba, by determining of polyphenols composition, as well as the antioxidant potential. The phenols contents (total polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, caffeic acid derivatives) were spectrophotometrically determined. The antioxidant activity assessed by the DPPH test indicated that only one sample (Av3) showed antiradical action, in accordance with the total polyphenolic content (77.75±0.82 mg GAE/g vegetable product). The high tannins concentration (41-59 mg GAE/g vegetable product) is important for the astringent and antihemorrhagic action of the products. TLC analysis showed the presence of important phytoconstituents, such as hyperoside, isoquercitrin and caffeic acid. The quantitative differences between the polyphenols content of the three tested products may be due to the conditions under which the raw material was harvested and stored. These could influence the quality of the medicinal product, that’s why the analytical control is important
