Capstone Project Title: Feeding Intervention Program for Teachers of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. A Capstone Proposal
Capstone Faculty Advisor: Dr. Jessica Alden, OTD, OTR/L
Abstract:
Nourishment plays a critical role in development. It is common for school-aged children to display selective eating. However, children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience selective eating at a much higher rate. Inadequate nutrition may result in decreased ability to perform student occupations. This research addresses the need for accessible and personalized resources for educators to increase food exploration in students with ASD to enhance nutritional intake. The study focuses on the current competence of teachers to perform feeding interventions and creating a program to acquire adequate skills to do so. Results showed that 63% of participants had students who were selective eaters, and 59% of participants felt somewhat confident and knowledgeable about Autism and feeding with little to no training or skills to perform interventions. Preliminary results from the post-survey reported that 100% (4/4) of participants gained knowledge and confidence in performing new intervention strategies. This highlights the necessity of an effective program of individualized intervention strategies for their students

The Development of a Continuing Education Module for Occupational Therapy Practitioners on Gender Diverse Individuals with Physical Disabilities
Capstone Faculty Advisor: Jessica Alden., OTD, OTR/L,
Abstract:
With the increasing awareness and number of gender diverse individuals in the United States, in combination with the current political climate, leads to historic and continuing medical discrimination through refusal of care, lack of education, or legal barriers to care. With occupational therapy’s emphasis on holistic care, it is important to improve the educational content for gender diverse individuals’ care for occupational therapists to apply knowledge to their care. This capstone looks at the intersectionality between gender-diverse individuals and physical disabilities and aims to educate occupational therapists on how gender-diverse individuals approach basic activities of daily living and how they manage dysphoria so that occupational therapists can incorporate gender-diverse care into practice within the context of physical disability care
