    On Interpersonal Religious Tolerance

    Should&nbsp;a&nbsp;Jew&nbsp;tolerate&nbsp;a&nbsp;Christian&nbsp;energetically&nbsp;proselytizing&nbsp;on a&nbsp;street&nbsp;corner&nbsp;in their&nbsp;Jewish community? Should an atheist tolerate evangelical anti-abortion activists outside an abortion clinic? There are a variety of situations that may call for interpersonal religious tolerance today. In this thesis, I develop and defend a two-level conception of interpersonal religious tolerance. I intend for this flexible two-level conception to encourage one to expand one&rsquo;s worldview and to make positive judgments of other&rsquo;s religious beliefs and practices, without demanding that one does so in order to tolerate others&rsquo; beliefs or practices.</p

    Evaluating Trends in American Pika Habitat Occupancy at Niwot Ridge Long-Term Ecological Research Site

    Climatic controls on species and their distributions are predicted to become more influential in the coming decades. In North America, one species expected to be especially impacted by climate change is the American pika (pika). This species is adapted to cold weather and struggles to thermoregulate as temperatures rise. It is also highly territorial, making pika populations easy to monitor. These characteristics have made pikas useful for studying climatic controls on habitat occupancy throughout their range. Southern subspecies might be especially vulnerable to warming; a 2016 study of O. p. saxatilis in the southern Rocky Mountains projected possible extirpation in Rocky Mountain National Park (ROMO). I evaluated evidence for this prediction using 2016-2024 occupancy data from 72 permanent plots established 15 km south of ROMO. I found no evidence of declining occupancy through 2024 but generalized linear modeling of occupancy as a function of climatic covariates demonstrated that winter temperature and winter snowfall were the most robust predictors. Plots with higher snowfall during cold winter temperatures were more likely to remain occupied, while wetter years and warmer winters reduced occupancy, likely due to a less insulating snowpack. Such climatic controls suggest an uncertain future for this subspecies. Modeling pika occupancy and its drivers gives us insight into both local and widespread ecological impacts of climatic changes and can help inform where to concentrate efforts to conserve pikas.</p

    From Standing Apart to Standing Together: The Social (Re)Organization of Biological Field Stations Through Computer-Supported Cooperative Work

    Biological field stations&mdash;scientific facilities adjacent to natural environments&mdash;are a resource for many researchers across scientific domains. These facilities provide essential support to researchers (e.g., housing, equipment, laboratory space, and staff expertise) that is necessary to facilitate science. Scientific research, including field research, is increasingly digital and data-intensive. However, despite advances in data-intensive environmental research, digital connections between field stations and the research they support, as well as the connections between field stations as a global network, are often missing. Station directors argue that these missing connections obscure their value in our ever-growing digital world. Thus, this dissertation addresses the question: How could field stations, individually and collectively, address these problems of disconnection from the larger scientific enterprise? To answer this question, I conducted a three-year qualitative and ethnographic study across 20 field stations examining the social organization of field station-supported research. I found that the research project is central to how science is conducted, and only portions of projects eventually become shared through downstream research outputs, like journal articles or datasets. This makes projects problematically and pervasively inaccessible to other researchers and to the broader scientific enterprise. I conceptualize this condition as &ldquo;dark projects.&rdquo; Interestingly, while projects are dark to the scientific enterprise, field stations are aware of projects, since they facilitate access, but lack visibility of the project&rsquo;s important downstream outputs. In response to the empirical findings, a final phase of research alternates between ethnography and infrastructuring to co-design infrastructure interventions with a field station director. These interventions illuminate dark projects using metadata that is standardly available but rarely employed. Through these interventions, field stations can attach their role to the larger research trajectory of projects by shifting the reporting of science from something researchers solely control post-fieldwork to something the field stations can also report by publishing projects at the point of station access. I argue that this shift redistributes power towards the station and research locations, providing an example of infrastructure intentionally designed to resist extractive colonial harms and to demonstrate field stations&rsquo; value by standing together, individually and collectively.</p

    Quasi-stars as a Means of Rapid Black Hole Growth in the Early Universe

    JWST observations demonstrate that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) exist by redshifts z ≳ 10, providing further evidence for &ldquo;direct collapse&rdquo; black hole (BH) formation, whereby massive (&sim;103&ndash;5M⊙) SMBH seeds are generated within a few million years as a byproduct of the rapid inflow of gas into the centers of protogalaxies. Here we analyze the intermediate &ldquo;quasi-star&rdquo; phase that accompanies some direct-collapse models, during which a natal BH accretes mass from and energetically sustains (through accretion) an overlying gaseous envelope. We argue that previous estimates of the maximum BH mass that can be reached during this stage, &sim;1% of the total quasi-star mass, are unphysical, and arise from underestimating the efficiency with which energy can be transported outward from regions close to the BH. We construct new quasi-star models that consist of an inner, &ldquo;saturated convection&rdquo; region (which conforms to a convection-dominated accretion flow near the BH) matched to an outer, adiabatic envelope. These solutions exist up to a BH mass of &sim;60% of the total quasi-star mass, at which point the adiabatic envelope contains only 2% of the mass (with the remaining &sim;38% in the saturated-convection region), and this upper limit is reached within a time of 20&ndash;40 Myr. We conclude that quasi-stars remain a viable route for producing SMBHs at large redshifts, which is consistent with recent JWST observations. &nbsp;</p
