The Art of Transcription: Rachmaninoff’s Styles of Arrangement as a Window into His Compositional Strengths
This study examines Rachmaninoff’s transcriptions as a revealing window into the broader scope of his compositional strengths. Though often dismissed in his own time as a stylistic traditionalist, Rachmaninoff’s work in transcription demonstrates a remarkable joining of harmonic daring, pianistic idiom, and rhetorical control. Far from derivative, these works illuminate the composer’s ability to distill essential musical content and reimagine it with creative authority. By surveying select examples—Lilacs, Daisies, Wohin?, the Violin Partita in E Major, and Liebesleid—this paper outlines the architectectural and textural strategies Rachmaninoff employs, categorizing his transcriptional methods into florid vs. conservative, and direct, elaborated, or paraphrased forms. These distinctions reveal a nuanced artistic instinct often overshadowed by critiques of his adherence to tonality, as well as overall musical form. As this paper argues, the transcriptional process itself—requiring survey, prioritization, and distillation—mirrors the very compositional virtues that define Rachmaninoff’s voice. In these transcriptions, we find not merely reworkings, but rhetorical reimaginings that speak powerfully to Rachmaninoff’s enduring relevance as both artist and reformer.</p
Enhancing Spin Squeezing in Sr Optical Lattice Clock through Digital Noise Reduction
Optical atomic clocks utilizing strontium are the gold standard of timekeeping. Generating entanglement by spin-squeezing has the potential to continue pushing the limits of clock stability below the fundamental performance limit for unentangled ensembles, the standard quantum limit (SQL). One way to do so is by using an optical cavity to transduce interactions between the atoms and to improve the cavity readout, one needs to minimize the noise of the stabilized cavity length. Noise in a control loop can arise from many different sources, including mechanical resonances of the piezo (PZT) used to control the cavity length, so addressing this noise can improve clock stability and maximize the capabilities of quantum sensing.
For this project, I measured the transfer function of the piezo-cavity system, inverted this transfer function, and extracted the poles and zeros. I then programmed this tailored digital filter on a Red Pitaya using an open-source Python package, PyRPL. Challenges still remain with the device implementation into the control loop, but afterwards this would ultimately contribute to improved clock precision and attain better spin-squeezing generated by the cavity.</p
Developing Interactive Musicianship through Chamber Improvisation
Chamber music relies heavily on connection and communication between musicians, yet many ensembles struggle to achieve this consistently. This paper explores how collective improvisation can serve as a powerful tool for developing interactive musicianship within chamber settings. Drawing on existing research, teaching strategies, and personal ensemble experience, the study highlights how improvisation fosters listening, trust, flexibility, and a sense of shared musical purpose. Through analysis of frameworks from figures like Derek Bailey, Augusto Monk, and Wiff Rudd, and the synthesis of multiple improvisation systems, the paper proposes a four-step guide designed to help chamber groups implement improvisation into their rehearsals. The goal is to help musicians not only play better together, but also think, listen, and create more collaboratively.</p
Engaging with University History: Planting One Seed at a Time
University archives often hold materials related to little-known aspects of university history. At the University of Colorado Boulder (CU Boulder), the libraries made use of an archival collection to develop One Seed, a seed giveaway program that told the story of how red sunflowers were originally cultivated there over 100 years ago. One Seed has been a popular program among students, university employees, and alumni, drawing attention to a unique part of university history, as well as the remarkable materials within the library archives. This article details the development and first three years of One Seed, showing how CU Boulder libraries used the program as an outreach tool while also forming partnerships across campus. Additionally, the article offers recommendations for replicating the program including considerations for state seed laws and institutional holdings.</p
Bound by Resistance: A Cultural Study of Indigenized BDSM
BDSM, or Bondage, Discipline/Dominance, Submission/Sadism, and Masochism, is a term that raises many eyebrows. BDSM is a practice where one’s imagination determines its boundaries. In these spaces, people engage in their freakiest desires, from being flogged to being urinated on. However, beyond the latex and leather, BDSM has served as a means of resisting and rebelling against normative structures for a long time. These practices have been used by participants to throw away authority and redefine intimacy. Individuals who engage in BDSM use acronyms like S.S.C (safe, sane, consensual) and R.A.C.K (risk-aware consensual kink) to teach others that these practices do not and should not ever encourage extremes like sexual harassment, assault, or rape. These acronyms make it easy for others to understand BDSM’s heavy reliance on education, consideration, and empathy of all parties. Contemporary artists have used BDSM in their art to celebrate the identities of oppressed communities that have historically been erased and devalued. This thesis engages with artwork by Dayna Danger, Peshawn Rae Bread, and myself and how we utilize “Indigenized BDSM” practices and imagery that focus particularly on processing and healing racial, sexual, and gender-based trauma to subvert patriarchal, colonial, and heteronormative systems. BDSM, in a Western context, was created to bring like-minded people together in celebration of their sexuality specifically. The key difference between traditional BDSM and Indigenized BDSM is the intention behind the practice. In addition to helping people feel comfortable with their sexualities and kinks, Indigenized BDSM throughout the artwork that I discuss plays a restorative, empowering, and resisting role, aligning with the Indigenous values of respect and care for all living beings, education on how to properly engage with and honor specific cultures, and encouraging consent and sovereignty. This is why the term “Indigenized BDSM” is particularly important for this thesis. Indigenized BDSM is about racial healing, however it can be practiced by any person of any culture, just as Indigenous teachings and values are not limited to specific people and can be honored through educating others on the practices. From studying the culture and history of this art, this thesis concludes that Indigenized BDSM as a social and artistic practice gives communities a way to take back control of their identities and bodies, regardless of their role in the bedroom, by helping people to explore, respect, and empower themselves and others.</p
Tracking Performance Studies Incorporating Machine Learning-Enabled Smartpixels
The High-Luminosity upgrade to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) heralds a promising era for high-energy physics. Unprecedented data rates will follow the increase of instantaneous peak luminosities. However, the CMS experiment cannot fully profit from this upgrade due to limitations on its Trigger—tasked with filtering uninteresting events—which cannot access the high-precision data available exclusively from the innermost part of the Tracker. Smartpixels are proposed for solving this issue through on-chip data reduction enabled by neural networks. Besides providing the necessary background on the LHC and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, this work explores the High-Luminosity upgrade from the perspective of the CMS Tracker and Trigger. Additionally, it motivates the use of hardware-based triggers and presents Smartpixels as a promising solution for this purpose. I dive into the on-chip implementation and the relevant performance studies. Next, the limitations and next steps for Smartpixels are discussed.
A Toy Detector model is developed to validate Smartpixels. This simulation models key physical processes, including multiple scattering and resolution smearing. Various detector layer configurations are studied and the corresponding resolution improvements are quantified. The Toy Detector is benchmarked against a simulated ttbar sample to evaluate its accuracy and to study the efficiency of Smartpixels under realistic conditions. Multiple efficiencies for Smartpixels are studied and the corresponding resolution improvements are quantified. Finally, potential future directions for the Toy Detector are discussed. </p
Hurricane Impacts on the Phosphorus Cycle
Phosphorus (P) is a key element crucial for life. P from land cycles through the ocean via primary productivity before being deposited in marine sediments. However, many parts of the marine P cycle remain poorly understood. For example, the coastal ocean, being closest to land and directly influenced by terrestrial inputs, plays a particularly important role in P cycling by delivering P that fuels plankton growth at the bottom of the food web, but details need to be clarified. In this study, sediment cores were collected from the Mississippi Delta region in the period between August 2021 and August 2022 and analyzed for P content. The samples were processed using a sequential extraction method for phosphorus in marine sediments (SEDEX) to separate different forms of inorganic P, with comparisons made between samples collected before and after Hurricane Ida on August 29th, 2021. Exchangeable P, primarily derived from phytoplankton and zooplankton, generally increased with depth and exhibited small but significant differences between pre- and post-hurricane. In contrast, P contained in calcite and apatite (CFAP) showed decreasing trends with depth and greater variability downcore. Residual P, attributed to terrestrial runoff, remained consistently low and showed no discernible trend. Overall, the impacts of Hurricane Ida on P appear minor, although continued research is necessary to confirm this. Comparison with the findings of Ruttenburg and Berner (1993) reveals important discrepancies in CFAP depth trends, suggesting that CFAP formation may be more complex and dynamic than previously thought.
