Fish and Reptiles of the ReBecca’s Hollow Site, Williams Fork Formation, Late Cretaceous (Edmontonian), Colorado & ‘Between the Dinosaurs’ Toes’: Approaches to Exhibiting Microvertebrate Fossils in Museum Displays (With Emphasis on the Cretaceous Period)
The ReBecca’s Hollow locality of the Late Cretaceous Williams Fork Formation (northwestern Colorado) yields a diverse, actinopterygian-dominated, vertebrate fauna from a freshwater environment. This assemblage is temporally correlative with the Horseshoe Canyon and St. Mary River Formations in Alberta but has many faunal similarities to Lancian localities from MT, WY, and the Dakotas. The discrepancy in fauna between the WFF and its Canadian contemporaries supports the hypothesis, proposed by others, for discrete faunal/climate zones between northern and central Laramidia across the Campanian-Maastrichtian boundary. The microvertebrate fossils from this locality provide important paleoeological data but, like other small fossils, are difficult to display and interpret in a museum setting. I propose a display method based on notions of worldbuilding and contextual learning that visually explain these specimens to museum audiences.</p
Multistage Polymer Networks for Designing Optical and Optically Processed Materials
This thesis explores the design of multistage polymer networks to separate desirable enduse properties from those optimal for processing purposes. Sequential control of light, heat, or other external stimuli enables this feat. Additional control is provided by spatial patterning of light as employed in the fields of holography, mechanophotopatterning, and volumetric additive manufacturing. Therefore, by comparing mechanical, geometrical, and optical properties throughout the stages of production, this work demonstrates the benefit of a multistep approach.
The first part of this thesis pertains to the implementation of a 3-stage network to prepare glassy holographic photopolymers. In Chapter 3, the combination of a urethane matrix, acrylate writing monomer, and a latent rigid core epoxide, enabled holographic writing in the desired rubbery state. Subsequent epoxide activation resulted in a final Tg of 101 °C with a storage modulus on the order of GPa at ambient temperature. A corresponding diffraction efficiency of 89% with 0.3% haze was achieved in 50 µm thin films.
The second part of this thesis focuses on the use of a dual-cure approach to spatially fix the topography of mechanophotopatterned films. In Chapter 4, this work prevented further topographical evolution via allyl sulfide dynamics by increasing the crosslinking density and Tg following patterning. The inclusion of 65 wt% bisphenol A diglycidyl ether mitigated the residual dynamics upon homopolymerization with a thermally latent acid. Surface features fixed by this cure remain within 1% of their original height after extended light exposure. Furthermore, in Chapter 5, the dual-cure system was employed to provide spatially fixed and consistent results to validate a computational model.
The final part of this thesis employs a multistage approach to prepare a negative photoresist for VAM. In Chapter 6, a polyurethane scaffold with degradable thioester linkages was combined with a variety of low-viscosity methacrylate writing monomers. Therefore, this scaffold provides accessibility to these monomers, and the mechanical properties they provide, without object settling due to gravity during the printing process. The scaffolding was later removed by aminolysis with little damage to the printed parts or their mechanical properties. Further, added inhibitor and real-time chemical and mechanical monitoring enabled high resolution printing with consistent timing. </p
Wavepacket-Mean Flow Interactions in the Kadomtsev–Petviashvili Equation
The interaction between a two-dimensional, vanishing amplitude (linear) wavepacket and a nonlinear, one-dimensional expansion wave is analyzed. Utilizing wave modulation theory in which the wavepacket’s oscillation period is much shorter than the total evolution time, approximate solutions are found to the governing partial differential equation, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, which models a variety of nonlinear wave phenomena. The conditions on the incident wavepacket’s wave vector that lead to either trapping or transmission of the wavepacket by the background mean flow are analyzed, and the evolution of the wavepacket amplitude is also determined. These solutions of the two-dimensional KP-Whitham modulation system in the harmonic limit are compared to analogous solutions of the one-dimensional Korteweg-deVries-Whitham modulation system.</p
Playbooks and Pageviews: How Wikipedia’s NFL Pages Reveal the Evolution of Digital Fandom
This thesis explores Wikipedia’s role as a collaborative knowledge platform by analyzing the documentation of the National Football League (NFL). Wikipedia serves as both a real-time event tracker and a long-term historical archive, making it a valuable case study in digital fandom and collective knowledge production. This research examines how Wikipedia contributors document franchise histories, season developments, and player careers, with a particular focus on major events like the Super Bowl and the NFL Draft.
Using temporal and network analysis, this study identifies key patterns in Wikipedia engagement. Pageviews and edits spike during major NFL events, demonstrating that Wikipedia functions as a dynamic reference tool for fans. While much of this activity is reactive, certain contributors update pages preemptively, ensuring that information is available before widespread public interest. Network analysis reveals that a small group of highly active editors is responsible for most NFL content, while casual contributors make sporadic updates.
A case study of the NFL Draft investigates whether Wikipedia activity can predict draft outcomes. A machine learning model trained on Wikipedia pageviews and edits shows that pre-draft engagement strongly correlates with first-round selections, though it is less effective at predicting mid-to-late-round picks.
These findings illustrate how Wikipedia balances real-time sports documentation with historical record-keeping, offering unique insights into the relationship between online collaboration, fan engagement, and digital sports media. While Wikipedia democratizes access to information, editorial patterns reveal biases in coverage, particularly for high-profile teams and players. This study contributes to broader discussions on how digital communities construct and preserve sports history in the modern era.</p
Quartz Mechanical Resonators for Circuit Quantum Acoustics
Hybrid systems that couple superconducting qubits to mechanical oscillators facilitate quantum control of individual phonons and have the potential to enable compact, highly coherent quantum memories and processors. To date, however, the utility of hybrid quantum acoustic devices has been limited by poor qubit and mechanical coherence times that are far shorter than those exhibited by their unhybridized counterparts. A primary challenge lies in the intrinsic nature of elastic waves in solids: the slow speed of sound results in a dense spectrum of acoustic modes, making it difficult to prevent spontaneous emission of the qubit into phononic degrees of freedom.
In this thesis, I will present a systematic effort to suppress loss mechanisms in superconducting qubits and mechanical resonators in the context of circuit quantum acoustics. I begin by demonstrating the use of crystallographic orientation optimization to passively suppress diffraction losses in narrow-aperture quartz surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. We then study the coupling of SAW resonators to a quasi-continuum of bulk acoustic modes; this motivates us to abandon bulk piezoelectric media in favor of bandgap-protected thin-film devices. By fabricating suspended phononic crystal resonators from thin-film quartz, we demonstrate an order-of-magnitude improvement in the coherence of this class of devices. I conclude by presenting preliminary measurements of a new flip-chip architecture for circuit quantum acoustics -- the `acoustic trampoline' -- that is designed to maximize qubit-mechanical coupling while simultaneously suppressing spontaneous acoustic emission.</p
Modelled connectivity of Antarctic krill spawning and nursery grounds along the Western Antarctic Peninsula
Understanding the connectivity between spawning and nursery grounds ofAntarctic krill (Euphausia superba) is essential for elucidating populationdynamics and informing ecosystem-based management of krill. This studyemployed a regional ocean model and particle tracking to investigate larvalkrill transport and connectivity along the western Antarctic Peninsula (wAP),a key region for Antarctic krill, over three austral summers (2016–2019).Simulations incorporated the descent-ascent cycle of early larvaldevelopment based on initial embryo sizes, along with varying larvalbehavior, to examine how physical and biological processes affect habitatconnectivity. Results revealed that nursery ground use and retention timeswere closely linked to local bathymetry. Deeper regions, such as theBransfield Strait and Marguerite Bay, retained larvae for longer durations(>50 days), while shallower nursery grounds (Gerlache Strait, GrandidierPassage) acted as secondary nursery habitats in simulations with smallerinitial embryo sizes. Simulations with larger initial embryo sizes led tonotable changes in retention, connectivity, and spawning locations, as moreembryos successfully hatched before reaching the seafloor. Interannual windvariability emerged as a key driver of larval supply pathways, influencingconnectivity between spawning areas and nursery grounds. These resultshighlight how a shallower hatching depth expands the range and reliability ofthe connectivity between spawning and nursery grounds in the wAP. By illustrating how physical forcing and biological traits jointly shape connectivity and retention between spawning and nursery grounds this study emphasizes the importance of integrating biological parameterization with physical modeling to better understand krill population dynamics.</p
The Question of Judaism in Seventeenth Century England: Judaizing as the Inevitable Conclusion of Protestant Biblicism
In seventeenth-century England, religious and philosophical engagement with Jewish ideas and with the ideas of “Judaism” and “Jewishness” deeply influenced the development of English Protestant culture. The presence of an imagined “Jew” and an imagined “Judaism” drove these English Protestants to define themselves in terms which had been consciously borrowed from what they understood to be the Jewish roots of their Christian religion. In this, they began to identify themselves as “new Israelites” and to define the Church and country which they were reconstructing as being “Israelite.” This identification emerged as the logical consequence of their embrace of a highly textual form of Christianity which placed a new emphasis on the Old Testament, which had been derived from the Hebrew Bible, and which narrates the history of the ancient Israelites. English identification with and appropriation of the Israelite narrative of the Bible created a new English culture whose ideological basis was a form of hybrid Judeo-Christianity.This thesis outlines how this culture developed in the seventeenth century. It discusses elements of the English Reformation of the sixteenth century which informed Judeo-Christian theological and political currents in the seventeenth century. In the second chapter, it will address the process by which a radical Protestant community in 1610s London adopted Jewish practices based on a belief in the necessity of continued observance of Mosaic Law by Christians and the subsequent suppression of that community. Following the examination of radicals who actively Judaized their religious practice, the third chapter will examine the ways in which religious conformists engaged in a similar process of socially acceptable moderate Judaizing, beginning in the 1550s, with emphasis on specific cases in the 1600s and 1620s. The fourth chapter will examine how this process bled into the political language of England, focusing on the specific cases of Judaic rhetoric in the process of migration to the American Colonies in the 1620s, the Israelite narrative in the English Civil Wars (1642-1651) and the Tithes Controversy (1606-1618).In this thesis, I argue that the embrace of Judaized religious practices and identities and the political embrace of Judaized rhetoric in this period created an English cultural identity which was partially Judaized and resulted in an English public which understood itself as inheritors of Biblical Israel. The product of this process was a missionary political culture which imagined itself as Israelite. Through its imperial reach, this culture changed the relationship between the political communities it influenced and Jewish people. In this, it created states where Jewish people found new homes and where their histories and traditions were considered integral to the national identities of those states.</p
