Unveiling Students of Midwifery Needs towards HOTS-based English for Specific Purpose Reading Materials
Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) are crucial in today`s fast-paced world of healthcare education. Healthcare professionals frequently encounter complex, unpredictable situations. HOTS enables them to assess patient conditions, make informed decisions, and solve problems effectively. These skills need to be taught to students of healthcare education. One of the ways is through the provision of HOTS-based learning materials in teaching English for specific purposes. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the students` need for English in relation to their future careers as paramedics. This study explores the needs of DIII Midwifery Study Program students at the Health Polytechnic, Ministry of Health in Palembang. Using a mixed-method approach incorporating both quantitative and qualitative, the research data were gathered using surveys for collecting quantitative data and semi-structured interviews for collecting qualitative data. The data was examined utilizing the Target Situation Analysis, Deficiency Analysis, Present Situation Analysis, and Strategy Analysis criteria for requirements analysis put forward by Hutchinson and Waters (1987). The study revealed that students of the Midwifery Program had a high interest in learning English, especially HOTS-based English reading materials. Additionally, the lecturer of English was also in need of a specific source of English material related to midwifery to support students learning English for specific purposes, as such material was not available in her teaching context
The Limola Language and Its Syntax: Unveiling the Functions, Structure, and Categories
Investigating the linguistic system of a regional language offers significant advantages from both the linguistic and cultural conservation perspectives. By examining a language's linguistic system, researchers can identify specific patterns employing subjects, verbs, objects, and other sentence elements while also documenting and preserving the language. Analyzing the syntax of the Limola language can provide new insights into general syntactic theory. The purpose of this study was to describe the syntactic functions, categories, and roles of Limola using a syntactic typology approach, clearly illustrating its syntactic functions, categories, and roles. The data for this study comprised phrases, clauses, and sentences in the Limola language, collected through instruments completed by sources and informants from two villages: Sassa and Makumpa. Data collection methods involved observation (survey), elicitation, and documentation. In drawing conclusions and discussions, triangulation presents the findings based on relevant theories. The results indicate that the syntactic categories in Limola are divided into five main categories: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and numerals, as well as two categories of function words, namely prepositions/conjunctions and pronouns. Each category plays a vital role in shaping Limola`s meaning and sentence structure
Teaching English Speaking through Discourse in the State Islamic Universities in Borneo
Introducing accurate discourses and understanding the discourses that students encounter in their daily lives is crucial for enhancing the teaching of spoken English language. To enhance students' linguistic proficiency, the method of teaching speaking through discourse involves immersing them in authentic dialogues and diverse communication scenarios. This is a descriptive qualitative research, employing a case study approach. The participants of the research are the teachers and students of the State Islamic University of Sultan Aji Muhammad Idris Samarinda and the State Islamic University of Antasari Banjarmasin. To collect data for the study, the researcher used a variety of research instruments, such as interviews, field notes, and questionnaires. This study's data analysis method adheres to the principles of qualitative research. The interactive model was used for the data analysis, which included stages for data collecting, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Research findings indicate that students have a preference for teachers who not only teach English language curriculum but also demonstrate how to achieve a successful future. For English teachers, it is important to teach students not only English-speaking materials but also proper behaviour and politeness. In terms of English language proficiency, students highlight that speaking is the primary skill in acquiring English since it demonstrates their mastery of the language
Students' Perceptions of the Challenges of ESP Courses: A Study from an Indonesian University
The current study aims to investigate challenges experienced by ESP students. Conducted at the University of Hamzanwadi (East-Lombok, Indonesia), this study employs both quantitative and qualitative methods with two instruments to collect data, questionnaires and interviews. The questionnaire was electronically sent out to 100 ESP students to discover challenges they have been dealing with, which was then statistically analyzed. In addition, semi-structured interviews were carried out with a representative of 20 ESP students to examine their perceptions of the challenges, which were then qualitatively analyzed using a coding system. The results of quantitative data revealed that the students have been experiencing 5 types of challenges in learning ESP with Linguistic Competence and University Support being the two most challenging issues for over 90% of students. Meanwhile, the qualitative data showed that the five challenges were intercorrelated and affected each other. Pedagogical implications gained from this study include university officials should provide support to facilitate ESP students with potential challenges and to help them eradicate the challenges. Despite these, several limitations in this study are found including it recruited a relatively small number of participants, and it missed to explore solutions that students have employed to tackle the challenges as it can provide us with meaningful insight into the general overview of ESP courses from students’ perspectives
The Representation of Social Actors in EFL Textbooks: Systemic Functional Linguistics Perspective
Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) has gained popularity as a linguistic theory, especially in the field of education where it provides a useful method for examining textbooks. The goal of this study is to examine how social actors are portrayed in a particular textbook utilizing SFL framework. Textual data were gathered from a sample of the textbook, and transitivity patterns of process categories and pronoun usage were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that the pronoun "he" was primarily utilized and that the material process, which denotes physical actions, was most commonly used, depicting men as the main actors. These results imply that the texts in the textbook reflect how social actors are portrayed and represented in speech and offer an understanding of their functions, choices, agency, and relation
Women's Domination in Their Relationship with Language in the Movie "Tilik The Series"
This research aims to describe the dominance of women in the film "Tilik The Series" through dialogue and scenes using note-taking techniques. There were 8 episodes taken as research data. Through this technique, 9 dialogues related to female domination were obtained. The analysis was carried out using Sara Mills' critical discourse analysis. The research results show that in society, women occupy a position as subjects who can voice their opinions through loud speech and physical actions. This is done by the characters Bu Tejo to the parking attendant, Bu Tejo to Nopek, and Yu Ning to Pak Tejo. The actions taken by several figures encouraged village women to do the same. This shows that women have the power to influence other women. Furthermore, women who are abandoned by their husbands receive a low position and negative nicknames in society. The research findings from the film "Tilik: The Series" suggest a significant transformation in the roles and perceptions of women in society. Women are portrayed as subjects who are empowered, capable of leadership, and able to challenge traditional gender norms and stereotypes, while still respecting cultural traditions. This implies a move towards a more gender-inclusive and equitable society where women have a more significant voice and influence in both public and domestic spheres
The 'Face' of Indonesian Cosmetics: Investigating Language Choices in Local Brand Advertisement Boards and Consumers' Preferences
English has been extensively chosen by multinational companies for the purpose of advertising cosmetics in expanding circle countries. However, studies focusing on the language choices made by Indonesian local cosmetic companies for their advertisement boards and the consumers’ preferences regarding these choices are scanty. The goals of this study, thus, are double-layered. First, the choices of language in each element of the advertisement board copywriting- brand and product names, taglines, slogans, and product descriptions- were revealed. Second, the consumers’ preferences regarding language choices on each of these elements were explored. The language choices were revealed by scrutinizing 98 collected local cosmetic advertisement boards using the types of language choice by da Silva (2017). Preferences were gathered using a survey adapted from Hornikx et al. (2010) and da Silva (2014) and were explored using thematic analysis. The findings show that English dominated all elements of copywriting in the local cosmetic advertisement boards- in brand and product names, taglines, slogans, and descriptions. The study, however, pointed out the gap between the domination of English and consumers’ preferences. A significant number of people chose Bahasa Indonesia as the voice for these advertisements mainly in the aspect of slogans and brand names. The findings show that the choice of Bahasa Indonesia in brand names was more preferable as it projected the products’ national identity in the global market and consumers’ national pride. The same preference was also found in the product descriptions as most consumers deemed Bahasa Indonesia to promote better understandability. These findings suggest that Indonesian cosmetic companies’ language choice policy for product advertisements needs to be revisited
An Analysis of Cohesive Devices in EFL Students' Essay Writing
Students need to be able to make effective use of cohesive devices in order to produce high-quality essays. This research aimed to investigate the use of cohesive devices in EFL students’ essay writing in the 2nd Semester of the English Language Department at a State University in North Sumatera. The data sources of this research were essays and transcripts of interviews. The method used in this research was qualitative content analysis and case study. The model used in data analysis were frequency count and content analysis by applying interactive models such as data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion. The research finding showed that Reference (59%) was the predominant grammatical cohesive device used by EFL students in essay writing compared to other types. Meanwhile, Ellipsis (0.3%) was the lowest. Moreover, compared to lexical cohesive devices, EFL students used Repetition at the highest rate (89%) in their essay writing whereas the percentage of Hyponyms used was the lowest (0.3%), however, Meronyms did not appear in this research. Furthermore, the students had adequate knowledge to apply grammatical cohesive devices appropriately (990 data), as opposed to the incohesive use acquired (105 data). Whereas in terms of lexical cohesive devices, all the phrases are cohesive. In this regard, the reasons for incohesive writing by students are interference from their native language and overgeneralization whereas the interference of the learning context is not found in this study. In conclusion, the understanding of cohesive devices can improve and embellish the knowledge in building a good and true sentence. This is also useful in avoid students from writing inappropriate sentences. Therefore, English writing lecturers are expected to help students facing obstacles such as the use of cohesive devices by applying explicit teaching and increasing their performance in terms of cohesive devices in essay writing
