Transitivity of President Jokowi's Speech Text at the G20 Event: Systemic Functional Linguistics Study
Using SFL analysis, this study seeks to describe the transitivity elements of Joko Widodo's speech at the G20 Summit. Through this research, it is hoped that insight will be gained and research development will be enhanced in the field of transitivity analysis contained in a text or similar material, and this research will then serve as a reference or source of information for future researchers. There are both spoken and written varieties of spoken language. Speech is one manifestation of oral communication. Empirical, practical, and theoretical phenomena constitute the primary foundation of research-based reasoning. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method and simple quantitative reasoning to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the quantity and presentation of tabular data. The data being analyzed is spoken data that is subsequently transcribed into words, phrases, clauses, and phrase groups. The data source is an audio-visual recording of Jokowi's speech obtained from the YouTube page of KompasTV.com. The method of data acquisition employs the listening technique, which is supported by the note-taking technique. In presenting data analysis, researchers employ general methods. The findings revealed that the types of processes detected in the data were mental, relational, behavioral, and verbal, with material processes dominating in appearance. Participant I and Participant II were discovered as humans and abstracts, respectively. The types of circumstances discovered took the form of extent, cause, matter, and function, and the manner of circumstance appearance predominated
Morphological Words Awareness in Reading Text Comprehension by Indonesian EFL Teachers
Since English is a foreign language in Indonesia and its teaching and learning is a text-based approach, it is essential to address the role of morphological words in the text. This current research aimed to investigate the awareness of English teachers on morphological words, specifically derivational and inflectional words, during reading text comprehension. The data used for this research was primary and secondary. A survey to collect the data was administered to 71 teachers from 24 (of 34) provinces attending an online professional in-service training program. The tool was a closed-ended questionnaire, adapting a 5-Likert scale with ten statements concerning derivational and inflectional words. The options of the questionnaire respectively are strongly aware, aware, hardly aware, unaware, and strongly unaware. The data were analyzed using the relative frequency distribution formula. Although it contradicts observation during the online training, this research revealed that the quality of awareness covering derivational and inflectional words was situated between 60%-80%, and the category is aware. The mean score of awareness of derivational and inflectional words are 76.29 and 74.05. The implication of this research to participants in implementing derivational and inflectional word awareness in reading text comprehension is immediate for their real teaching routines in the classroom
Transitivity Analysis of Taylor Swift's Lyrics in Midnights Album
The research analyzes 20 songs in Midnights (3 a.m. version), a record-breaking album by Taylor Swift using Halliday’s transitivity framework and Simpson’s stylistic approach to the lyrics that are regarded as a form of verbal play. The objective is to prove that the transitivity choice is stylized for supporting the theme building of songs in Taylor Swift’s Midnights album. The transitivity analysis is taken as the tool to reveal the mind style impregnated in the lyric texts. Three dominant types of processes found are the human experience of the external world (material 41,09%), the internal world of consciousness (mental 16,89%), and the identification and classification to relate one aspect of the experience to another (relational 29,11%). These three dominant proccesses build the ideational meaning of the music album which reflects the songwriter’s view of the world. The songs are found to be taking four subjects of experience which are being in love, being in a bitter relationship, facing self-contempt, and scheming revenge. Such construe of the world is represented by the transitivity processes found in song lyrics enunciating one’s outlook on reality through song lyrics. The findings of the result are contributive to English learners who have an interest in examining texts of popular culture
Translation of Subtitle Texts by Visually Impaired Students: Process Analysis and Translator Subcompetencies
This article discusses the process of translating subtitles from English into Indonesian by visually impaired students. The approach used was a qualitative approach. Furthermore, this approach has two aspects of discussion, namely genetic (the translator) and objective (the translated text). First of all, the genetic aspect of this research is the translator sub-competence of visually impaired students. Furthermore, the objective aspect in this research is related to the translation process and the translations they produce. The data were collected using observation, true assignment, and recording techniques. Based on the research results, the translator’s sub-competencies include a) bilingual sub-competence; b) extralinguistic sub-competence; c) instrumental sub-competence; d) transfer sub-competence; e) strategic sub-competence; and f) psychophysiological components. To improve the quality of translation of visually impaired students, the researchers have compiled eight translation recommendations, such as translators must: pay attention to the suitability of the meaning of the source language, avoid omitting linguistic units, pay attention to word classes, and so on. Based on these recommendations, it is imperative that visually impaired students implement them in order to improve their capability as early-career translators
Theme and Thematic Progression Analysis of Pre-Service Teachers' Recount Text
This study investigates patterns of the theme and thematic progression in a recount text by a pre-service teacher in Indonesia. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative case study research design. The data were obtained from six pre-service teachers’ texts. This study uses the theory of the Theme system developed by Halliday (2014) and the theory of Thematic progression proposed by Eggins (2004) as the framework to analyze the data. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers employed various approaches to building interest and depth in their work, such as coherence using sufficient textual themes and theme progressions. The theme system includes the topical, interpersonal, and textual themes delivered to make the text cohesive and coherent. Furthermore, the Zigzag pattern showed that the teacher maintained a clear focus, successfully established a logical connection, and provided elaboration in their writing. Although it needs several improvements on the higher-level theme, the teacher employed various approaches to building interest and depth in her work. The findings of this study suggest that pre-service teachers need to work on a higher level of English writing for academic and professional writing competence. Finally, it has implications for future studies that could extend this study in investigating argumentative texts written by teachers to improve the higher level of English writing and professional competence
School-related Variables Support toward the Utilization of Language Learning Strategies in a Private Bilingual High School
Learning strategies play significant roles in successful English language learning, especially in the EFL context where inputs are limited. However, the use of learning strategies is highly affected by internal variables, e.g., motivation, learning style, and external variables, e.g., school-related variables. This study aims at exploring the roles of school-related variables in supporting the use of language learning strategies. This study was conducted in a private bilingual high school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and five students who fulfilled the criteria were selected as the participants. The data were collected through semi-structured online interviews and recorded for more accessible analysis. The results of the interview were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The results of the study showed that school-related variables have significant and distinctive roles in supporting the use of language learning strategies. Each variable has its parts, e.g., the curriculum deals with language input, and the learning environment can enhance students’ motivation. Thus, teachers and school principals should be aware of their prominent roles and be able to design and create supportive school-related variables for their students
The Comparison of Satirical Jokes in the Reels of @Podcastkeselaje and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah
Despite the rise of social media platforms such as Instagram, satire remains an effective way to discuss and criticize current issues and states of affairs without offending communities. Hence, this research examines the satirical jokes found in the @podcastkeselaje Instagram account and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah in order to discuss social phenomenon that exist between different states. The objectives of this study are to classify the types of satire, describe the way of the satirical jokes are delivered in the reel video and The Daily Show, and explain the comparison of satirical jokes found between Indonesian and American culture. The data was collected from 15 reel videos of @podcastkeselaje official Instagram account with a total of 67 utterances, compared to 4 episodes of Trevor Noah’s Show with a total of 11 utterances. This qualitative study employs Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Fairclough as the approach and Abrams and Harpham’s concept of satire. Based on the results of the study, Horatian satire (28,2%), Juvenalian satire (20,6%), and Menippean satire (51,2%) are the most frequently found in the reels video. The satirical jokes found in the reel videos were delivered in a direct way, either by serving humor or insulting the target harshly and indirectly expressing the satire to the target. According to the findings, the comparison of Indonesian and American satire is clearly depicted by the similarities in social, political, and racism issues due to similar social backgrounds; if Indonesia consisted of various tribes, America is consisted of various ethnicities. Both of the nations adhere to a democratic system which refers to the implementation of Human Rights no matter what their races, they are totally different in cultural cases related to Eastern and Western norms and values. Therefore, the background of a culture impacts the realization of the satire
The Portrayal of Men and Women in Arabic Textbooks: Insight from Indonesian Pesantren
Although gender representation in Arabic textbooks has been extensively documented, little is known about it from the perspective of local textbooks. To fill this void, the present study aims to examine gender representation in Arabic textbooks at one of the most prominent Islamic Boarding Schools in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. This study uses a case study research design and Choiroh and Taufiq's theory (2020) to analyze data. The research findings revealed that the gender representation in that textbook encompasses stereotypes, subordination, marginalization, and double burden in the themes of time, sports professions, and patient clinics. The factors behind the emergence of gender representation were classified into internal and external factors. Internal factor is caused by being written by a female Arabic teacher, while external factor includes patriarchal culture. This research implies that teachers or instructors in Islamic boarding schools need training or workshops to discuss gender equality so that stereotyping, marginalization, and the double burden that disadvantages women can be considered and avoided
Revealing the Framing of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy-Themed Poems in the Jawa Pos Digital Media: Ontological, Epistemological, and Axiological Perspectives
The digitalization era considers the media an urgent influencer for various aspects of life. The media's perspective also shapes perspectives and even influences decision-making for the community. Every media has an ideology. Framing analysis is intended to dissect the ideology of the media when constructing facts. On the other hand, the spread of digital media has impacted the ease of publication of literary writings as a factual form of self-expression. Poem as a type of literature has always been popularly chosen by the public because it contains both freedom and aesthetics. This study aims to describe the framing of the Kanjuruhan tragedy-themed poem in the Jawa Pos digital media from ontology, epistemology, and axiology perspectives. This type of research is qualitative. Data analysis descriptively positioned the researcher as the main research instrument. The data collection method uses basic tapping techniques and advanced techniques in the form of notes. The analytical procedure to determine framing is done by reading the poem carefully, analyzing the framing of the poem according to Entman's approach, and summarizing the findings. The results of framing research using an Entman’s approach seen from the depth of the perspective of ontology, epistemology, and axiology show that the poem published by Jawa Pos contains the sharpness of criticism and reflection by raising solidarity on the issue of humanism which indicates the alignment of creators to victims and criticizing state institutions and those in power. These findings add to the diversity of framing research using the Entman approach with new objects in the form of literary works. These results also indicate that framing analysis can clarify the ideology of a media in terms of everything it publishes
EFL Students' Psychological Well-Being in Learning across Different Epistemic Beliefs Levels
Epistemic beliefs of English language learning (EFL) learners are one of the factors that have increased awareness among people due to their pivotal role in influencing students' success and learning strategies and behaviors. The current study aims to compare the two variables above and thus investigate EFL university students' psychological well-being across different levels of Epistemic Beliefs. This quantitative study uses an independent sample T-test to determine the mean difference between two independent groups, which are the psychological well-being (henceforth, PWB) and epistemic beliefs of EFL students. The data was gathered by delivering online questionnaires via Google Forms to 96 students from a reputable university in East Java, Indonesia, majoring in English language education. The results indicate that there is no difference in the psychological and emotional well-being of students in the study area among different levels of epistemic beliefs (i.e., sophisticated and simple). According to the findings, investigating students' epistemic beliefs can provide insights into their educational engagement and well-being when studying. It is found that the PWB of different epistemic beliefs of Indonesian EFL learners is not that significant, and it is implied that epistemic beliefs are a spectrum that can be influenced by other aspects, such as cultural facets
