Agri-Food Industry Discourses on Temporary Foreign Workers

    No full text
This presentation provides an overview of ongoing research on the agri-food industry’s messaging surrounding temporary foreign workers (TFWs). TFWs are a central and growing component of Ontario’s agri-food workforce, providing a source of reliable seasonal labour as the industry anticipates continued shortages of local workers over the next decade. Simultaneously, agricultural migrant labour has been a topic of contention in recent years, with academic research and news articles highlighting the potential for exploitation and negative health outcomes faced by TFWs. Several groups representing the agri-food industry have taken measures to influence public opinion on these matters through media campaigns featuring websites, social media, newspaper articles, and educational materials. The research featured in this presentation addresses an absence of academic literature on this subject through critical discourse analysis. This project involves the analysis of written and oral texts on TFWs produced by agri-food groups in order to engage with industry discourse on migrant labour. Key insights include the central arguments presented by these texts, the rhetorical and stylistic choices made, and the ways these texts align or conflict with established academic literature. This research will have implications for the formation of policy surrounding agricultural TFWs and public discourse on this subject

    A Pluralistic Approach to Health

    No full text
In his chapter on Responsibility and Fairness, Larry Temkin (2022a) considers the conflicting ideals of fairness and efficiency in the context of universal health care. While it is unfair for someone to die from a preventable disease because they live in a rural area, it is additionally inefficient (or does less good) to cater to those living in the countryside as a large proportion of the medically needy live in major cities. Temkin argues that an effective altruist approach emphasizes the importance of maximizing the greatest good, however, a pluralistic approach considers the conflicting ideals of fairness and efficiency and thus acknowledges the importance of conducting trade-offs between values that are required to effectively aid the needy. This paper supports Temkin’s pluralistic approach to aid and therefore rejects an effective altruist approach to aid by considering the conflicting ideals of fairness and efficiency in the context of global health. I argue that while issues of efficiency and inefficiency are imperative, fairness presents itself as an equally important moral value because it is grounded in human rights. Furthermore, I maintain that when we act fairly, we do so because we feel that we have a moral duty to treat others in a way that is just and inherent (that which is the intention of human rights). I will support this argument by illustrating how fairness and efficiency conflict in a public health setting and utilize the controversy surrounding vaccinations during the Covid-19 Pandemic as an example. &nbsp

Temporal Origins and Eternal Controversies: A Philosophical Inquiry into the Eternity of the World in Islamic Thought

    No full text
This paper evaluates arguments for and against the eternity of the world presented by the prominent Islamic philosophers Averroes, al-Kindi, and al-Ghazali, as well as their Greek predecessors Aristotle and Philopinus. This evaluation attempts to show the inconsistency of arguments supporting an eternal world and derive consistent principles from non-eternal arguments. On this basis, I contend that time and creation necessarily have a beginning. The analysis begins with Aristotle’s argument, highlighting its logical inconsistency exposed by Philopinus’ counterargument. Al-Kindi contributes by demonstrating the absurdity of infinite time and arguing that bodies and time are interdependent, precluding the possibility of the material universe’s eternality. Al-Ghazali\u27s rejection of the eternity of the world introduces the idea of God creating time, which provides a framework for a necessary beginning of time. Averroes challenges this position by attempting to reconcile eternity with the impossibility of actual infinities, but his account is shown to contain logical inconsistencies. I then outline an argument asserting the world’s necessary beginning. I draw on al-Ghazali’s insight into God’s role in creating time to expand al-Kindi’s demonstration of the impossibility of infinite material time to immaterial things. By establishing that neither material nor immaterial things are eternal, I conclude that the universe cannot be either. As such, this essay contributes to the discussion regarding the enduring problem of the universe’s origin by addressing inconsistencies in previous arguments to present its own solution

    No full text

This study analyzed how Canadian post-secondary libraries have managed and administered their web-scale discovery service and how adopting a discovery service has changed the traditional boundaries of standard library functions. Through a combination of survey responses and semi-structured interviews, the author investigated how Canadian academic libraries organized around their web-scale discovery service. Academic libraries can manage their discovery service from a Technical Services unit, a Library Systems, or a Web Services department, or by a committee. However, there is consensus that a discovery service requires collaboration and cooperation among many functional areas. Discovery service leaders often have organizational awareness to break down the silos between traditional library functions to perform the various duties related to managing and administering their web-scale discovery service. Individuals responsible for their discovery service are flexible and work collaboratively with staff in many different areas and often have a strong user-centred focus.

Factors influencing sports talent development in Senior High Schools in the Upper East Region of Ghana

    No full text
Despite the increasing interest in examining predictors within sports talent development, there is a dearth of studies in the Ghanaian context. Yet, Senior High Schools (SHSs) in the Upper East Region of Ghana are expected to help talented student-athletes grow their potential. This necessitates empirical research on factors that predict sports talent development within the Ghanaian context. Against this background, this study examines factors influencing sports talent development in SHSs in the Upper East Region of Ghana. Using a questionnaire, data was collected from two hundred and three (203) sports coaches (123 male and 80 female) since the core responsibility of developing sports talents lies with them. Multiple regression analysis was calculated using SPSS version 25 to identify the factors that predict the development of talents in sports. It was found that adequate sports facilities significantly made the largest contribution (β = .300, p<.05), followed by expert coaching (β = .271, p<.05), regular training (β = .260, p<.05), and family support (β = .151, p<.05). However, genetics made only small and not significant contribution. Therefore, it was recommended that coaches should encourage and guide talented athletes to train regularly to develop their talents. Again, SHSs should provide talented student-athletes with adequate sports facilities and equipment, and qualified coaches to help them develop their sports talent. Also, parents, siblings, and friends should provide support to talented student-athletes in any way possible.

Communication barriers and deaf learner misbehaviour in a South African special needs school

    No full text
Mainstream schools often encounter problems with learner behaviour which disrupt effective teaching and learning. Inclusive special schools with learners with disabilities, including learners who are deaf, are not spared such problems. This is so especially when they face the challenges of communication barriers. This paper focuses on the influence of communication barriers on misbehaviour by learners who are deaf. The research was a qualitative case study conducted in Gauteng province of South Africa at an inclusive special needs school with learners with disabilities. It aimed to establish the effectiveness of interventions for managing behaviour among the learners. The study found that effective communication plays a vital role in the positive management of the behaviour of deaf learners. It recommends that the learners who are deaf be provided access to language and specialized communication support and language resources such as oral interpreting, sign language, and hearing aids.

    wiisagi-ma’iingan

    No full text
The Ojibway word for coyote or “bitter wolf” is wiisagi-ma’iingan. Often revered as tricksters or messengers in Ojibway culture and lore, it is a misunderstood and ubiquitous being that has the ability of transformation.  It is imperative to understand that the revival of traditional knowledge and language is combined with the long-term process of decolonization. While writing this piece, the author asked themself, “How do we find ourselves again in an identity that has been fragmented?” Indigenous cultural identity is in a constant state of renewal and restoration. The theme is focused on finding a sense of home and identity in the Indigenous body. How the concepts of trauma and loss can create these hidden worlds inside us and how they can redefine the different ways in which we relate to each other and the natural world around us. Trauma is not just a past occurrence; it is the imprint left by that experience on the mind and body. This imprint has ongoing consequences for how Indigenous peoples manage to survive in the present. There is hope of recovery in the fractured self and through the history of loss, Indigenous peoples continue to reclaim their own sense of belonging
