First records of Tropidia albistylum Macquart (Diptera: Syrphidae) in Canada

    No full text
Flower flies, or hover flies, (Diptera: Syrphidae) are a family of true flies found in most terrestrial ecosystems. The flower fly genus Tropidia Meigen includes four species found within Northeastern North America, with three of these four species previously recorded from Canada. Here we report the first records of Tropidia albistylum Macquart for Canada, as well as a digital record from iNaturalist. We also include an updated map of the species’ known range using records from institutional collections and iNaturalist observations. A brief description of habitat is discussed

In the last decade, the Gender-Transformative Approach (GTA) has pivoted the frame used by international cooperation and academic research in gender integration; however, there is insufficient information regarding how the GTA operates in executing projects and programs. We evaluated a development project in rural areas of Valle del Cauca (Colombia). The project was implemented by Autónoma University and funded by the International Development Research Center (IDRC). The project sought to remove barriers to recruiting, retaining and advancing women in science and technology fields for promoting green industries in the South American Country. The project was designed within the GTA as one of the theoretical approaches for its implementation. Our goal was to identify to what extent the project\u27s activities have impacted the successful inclusion of GTA. Based on the Typologies of Change: Gender Integration in Agriculture and Food Security Research developed by the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT), we designed a methodology that allows us to map i) what strategies enable gender equality and transformation in the project ii) what level the strategies impact (individual, community, organizational) iii) the relationship between the strategies and the results. Our research included an exploratory phase where we conducted informal interviews in the field. We reviewed the project\u27s documents and conducted 12 semi-structured interviews with diverse actors (beneficiaries, project team, institutions, and organization representatives). Our results indicate that combining soft and hard strategies enables transformations at the individual and community levels

The purpose of this study is to define and describe the experience of peer-orchestrated development (POD) groups, a unique model of collaborative learning being applied in a marriage and family therapy (MFT) graduate program. PODs are study and work groups consisting of four to eight members that are required to convene weekly between class meeting dates to discuss readings and collaborate on assignments and projects. Students typically remain in the same POD for the duration of their graduate program (three years). Using a phenomenological approach, the Giorgi method (1991), the current study will analyze the themes that emerge from the experiences reflected by four graduate student co-researchers participating in POD groups. The study includes a review of the literature related to collaborative learning groups in MFT programs, highlighting deficiencies in the current body of research, as well as a discussion of the implications and suggestions for further research.

The population of Canadians identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and two-spirit (LGBTQ2+) has been growing rapidly over the last several years. As such, the number of sexual and gender diverse (SGD) couples has also been growing, and relational and systemic therapists, such as couple and family therapists (CFTs), may find an increase in the demand for LGBTQ2-affirming therapy. However, many of the tools available to CFTs were developed based on the experiences and needs of cisgender and heterosexual people. In this article, I present a theoretically-agnostic tool for use with SGD couples that expands on existing seven and eight C’s frameworks for assessment with couples. Each C in the initialism represents an important area of couple functioning that should be assessed in couple’s therapy. By expanding on the description of the application of each C to better reflect the unique experiences of SGD couples and adding two new C’s – community and creativity – the ten C’s model guides CFTs in completing a holistic assessment of SGD couple’s functioning. Further, given the high prevalence of trauma exposure and traumatic stress among SGD populations, I argue that to be LGBTQ2-affirming means to be trauma-informed. Therefore, my description of each C is infused with this lens. My hope is that practicing clinicians will find this tool useful as they move towards creating a more affirming practice for SGD clients.

Analyzing trends and suggested instructional strategies for Geometry education: Insights from Uganda Certificate of Education-Mathematics Examinations, 2016-2022

    No full text
Geometry education plays a pivotal role in fostering analytical, spatial, and problem-solving skills among students. Nonetheless, there is still a problem with how well geometry training in Ugandan schools accomplishes these objectives and this is evident in the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations. To close this gap, a comprehensive examination of data taken from Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) reports covering the years 2016 to 2022 was carried out; with an emphasis on candidates’ performance, the study looks at common geometric ideas, pinpoints areas of weakness for candidates, and assesses response quality. This study\u27s content analysis reveals notable variations in the quality of responses to various mathematics areas, with geometry consistently having the largest percentage of poor responses. Interestingly, in most areas, attempt levels positively correlate with response quality; but, in the case of geometry, this correlation reverses, suggesting that learners in this domain confront different problems. These problems include using geometric principles for problem-solving, combining algebraic and geometric concepts, and spatial visualization. The study advocates for using technology, active and problem-based learning; as these approaches provide opportunities for experiential learning, and conceptual knowledge reinforcement to learners.  All this will support ongoing attempts to enhance mathematics education, particularly in the field of geometry, within the Ugandan context

Investigating the Effects of Dark Period Light Exposure on Sex Expression In Female Cannabis sativa

    No full text
Hermaphroditism in female plants is a common problem in the cannabis industry. Cannabis sativa florogenesis is dependent on photoperiod, and industry experts suspect disruptions to the photoperiod contribute to hermaphroditism. The goals of this report are to (i) determine the relationship between hermaphroditism and dark period light exposure in C. sativa, (ii) identify a causal mechanism that could explain female hermaphroditism, and (iii) recommend a course of action for indoor cultivators. A literature search suggested that hermaphroditism in C. sativacould be the result of a very low fluence response. To test this idea, 403 plants grown indoors were inspected for male flowers. The distance of each plant from the nearest grow room door—the proposed source of dark period light—was used to calculate relative dark period light intensity values for each plant. Linear regression analysis was used to assess the relationship between relative light intensity and males per plant. The average males per plant was 0.136, compared with an intercept coefficient of 0.125 (p=0.00197, R2=0.0162). Based on these results, proximity to a door does not affect hermaphroditism. Because the actual light intensities during dark periods in this study were likely too low to cause very low fluence responses, this study cannot confidently evaluate the relationship between dark period light exposure and hermaphroditism in C. sativa. Management at the study site would be advised not to spend resources addressing grow room door light leaks

Chantal Akerman as "auteur": contradictions of the discourse and posture of a filmmaker

    No full text
