Adorno introduced the notion of “newness” into philosophy of music (§ 1), a notion he later intertwined with the notion of “truth content” (§ 2). To release the two notions from the critical theory, the paper links both notions to a philosophy of music, though radically conceived. A correct ontology of newness allows one to extend music’s truth content plus their material (§ 2.1.) and formal (§ 2.2.) axes to the negative time of the listener. Musical creation involves immanent listening to history and society, but at the same transcendent listening, a response “to the unconditionality of the eternal in the negative of the occasion” (§ 3). Webern’s musical language seeks to reach the utopian place of newness itself. The paper seeks to extend newness to the listener’s artistic creation, regardless of his or her place in what the paper dubs “music listening triangle.”Adorno colocou sob a mira da filosofia a noção de “novidade” em música (§ 1), que posteriormente intersetou com a noção de “conteúdo de verdade” (§ 2).

“Read, Imagine, Play”: memory of a kids e-lit exhibition
From 13 to 15 July 2023, the "Kids e-Lit Exhibition: Read, Imagine, Play" was held at the Exploratório - Centro Ciência Viva in Coimbra (Exploratorium). The initiative was part of the official programme of the Electronic Literature Organization Conference 2023, whose theme was "Overcoming Divides: Electronic Literature and Social Change". Curated by Ana Maria Machado, Ana Albuquerque e Aguilar and Jaqueline Conte, respectively professor and researchers from the PhD Programme in Materialities of Literature at the University of Coimbra, the exhibition featured ten digital literary works for multimodal and interactive reading. As rarely before in the history of ELO conferences and integrated exhibitions, the target audience was not primarily made up of conference participants. The focus was on external audiences, especially children and young people, and reading mediators. The aim of this article is to record the memory of this exhibition and the works presented in it, as well as to present the difficulties and challenges of building a relevant selection of digital productions, while seeking to avoid technical issues and ensure a good reading experience.
Tudo é História: Cardoso Pires e a lente intrometida
In this short study, we will try to establish a typology that recognises how Cardoso Pires uses history, past and present, and how it interferes with the narrative, conditioning it explicitly. We have divided the study into four parts, which aim to account for this discursive subtlety: historical theatre? / Satire of the past in Alice mode; present history, intrusive, conditioning the discourse; detective story with history in the background; history glimpsed through an augmentative lens. He is not the author of novels or historical plays as such. However, history is very present in all his works, an intrusive history, which is there, which intrudes on discourses, makes them vulnerable and puts pressure on the characters, without them realising how much they are indebted to the environment and external circumstances that surround them.
By reading the Uses of the Territory, Milton Santos’s theory, active and conflicting forces are identified in the dispute for natural resources and the power of hegemonic actors. With the intensification of agriculture in the Brazilian Cerrado, exacerbated consumption and pollution were also activated. This sometimes resulted in the scarcity of important water resources for the entire national territory, directly affecting traditional populations and conservation areas. The challenge here is to expose the antagonism of interests between users of the territory for planting and selling commodities and the territorialised communities, those who have an organic relationship with the place. This study is based on the theory centred on the perspective of the Global South - Santos, Porto-Gonçalves, Quijano, Mbembe, Mignolo, among others - in dialogue with Morin's Complexity Theory - non-Global South. This qualitative research is based on exploratory research, carried out in 2022, in the municipality of Chapada Gaúcha and nearby areas. Information was obtained from informal conversations with residents, as well as research into secondary data, bibliographic and documentary, which shows how disputes are established, how all this affects local populations and the environmental impacts resulting from extensive agricultural cultivation that is detrimental to regional socio-biodiversity. As a result, it was found that a minority group of people from outside the area involved in agro-farming subjugate the different forms of life that depend on the territory. Sociocultural overlap leads to the obliteration of territorial sociobiodiversity.
M.Sc., Ph.D. The Argument from Illusion in Gorgias’ treatise On What Is Not
The Argument from Illusion in Gorgias’ treatise On What Is Not
Abstract: The argument from illusion which is also known as the argument from perceptual relativity or from conflicting appearances and sense-impressions, has occurred in many thinkers from antiquity to the present. The conclusions drawn from that argument are different from philosopher to philosopher. In Plato's Republic, the case of the crooked object when in water and similar cases show that there is a weakness in our nature within us revealed by the fact that our sight is liable to illusion and confusion. Aristotle's Protagoreans concluded that one's beliefs about whatever appears, let us say, cold or not cold is true and proceeded to a denial of the principle of contradiction. In Sextus Empiricus, it justifies a scepticism about belief and knowledge in general. In Descartes, it justifies a scepticism about the senses. In Ayer, the argument from illusion proves the existence of sense-data. My intention herewith is to show how Gorgias uses the argument from illusion treating it as related to the problems of the philosophy of perception. No attention has been paid to this issue in the literature
Phren Hiere: A New Theology for a New Society in Empedocles's Verses
The aim of this paper is to analyze Empedocles’s main doctrines in the light of his historical and cultural context. To be precise, I will attempt to show how the Agrigentum and Sicily of his time – ravaged by inter-Greek wars, infighting between the various social classes, and even indigenous Sicilians’ revolts against Greek settlers – bore witness, in his eyes, to the ever-increasing power of Strife, which was influencing the cosmos not solely on a physical level but also on a moral one. Empedocles hoped in the exit from the present cosmic cycle through the attainment of a higher condition, capable of transforming the daimones into ‘holy minds’, i.e. into entities completely imbued with Love and, for this reason, unassaible by Strife in this cosmic phase, well before the return of the sphere. In this way, Empedocles tried to found a new theology, with Love as the main deity, and a new ethical code, in opposition to traditional poems and values, which were the expression, as everything else in the world save for his On nature and Purifications, of Strife. The aim of this paper is to analyze Empedocles’s main doctrines in the light of his historical and cultural context. Sustentabilidade, Expansão urbana e Renaturalização
The intensification of natural habitat degradation and the consequent loss of biodiversity represent central challenges to environmental sustainability on a global scale. Rapid urban expansion, combined with the unsustainable use of resources and the fragmentation of ecosystems, has exacerbated an unprecedented state of ecological vulnerability. Urban areas, as dynamic centers of consumption, innovation, and territorial transformation, occupy a strategic position in reversing these trends. Urban renaturalization, particularly through the adoption of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), emerges as a diverse and evolving tool within urban planning frameworks aimed at climate resilience and ecological restoration.
Instruments such as the Municipal Ecological Structure already incorporate, in alignment with the specificities of the urban territory, tools such as ecological corridors, green infrastructure, sustainable drainage systems, and the rehabilitation of water bodies. These approaches simultaneously promote biodiversity conser
vation, population well-being, and urban environmental quality. However, the implementation and further development of such tools — or others of a similar nature — remain constrained by institutional barriers, the complexity of multi-level governance regimes, budgetary limitations, and political-cultural resistance.
This study offers a critical reflection on these challenges, exploring operational pathways to overcome them, with an emphasis on the importance of collaborative governance, informed citizen participation, and the strengthening of legal and financial frameworks. Ultimately, the work argues for the centrality of NBS as a structuring axis of contemporary urban agendas and a promising vector for the renaturalization of cities.
The growing pressure to reclassify rural land in Portugal demands robust legal and technical foundations. This article examines the National Geographic Information System (SNIG) as a critical infrastructure for the revision of Municipal Master Plans and for the application of the exceptional regime introduced by Decree-Law No. 117/2024. The methodology combines SNIG data with complementary sources – Cadastral Registry, National Agricultural Reserve (RAN), National Ecological Reserve (REN), and areas classified by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF) – in order to identify normative overlaps and land use conflicts. The results reveal inconsistencies between administrative deliberations and the physical-legal boundaries of the territory, exposing risks of nullity of administrative acts and legal uncertainty. The article argues that the absence of mandatory normative articulation with SNIG undermines transparency, predictability, and the legality of public decisions. It ultimately defends the binding integration of SNIG into reclassification procedures as a condition for sustainable land planning, consistent with the INSPIRE Directive and the principles of good governance.
This article explores how the artist-poet Silvia Bragança, confronted with the tragic loss of her husband Aquino de Bragança (a key figure in the liberation struggles in southern Africa), inscribes her grief in a process of meaning-making, according to Robert Neimeyer's theoretical framework. Our analysis demonstrates that her poetry is not limited to a simple nostalgic tribute, but embodies an act of resilience. Silvia's commitment is rooted in her life before her marriage. Marked by her experiences in her native Goa, then in Portugal and Mozambique, in the wake of the Carnation Revolution and the decolonisation struggles, she developed very early a graphic poetry denouncing oppression and exalting freedom and equality. After the 1986 accident, she refused to linger in the trauma and used her poetry as therapy. But Silvia is not content to be a guardian of memory; she becomes an actor in a committed transmission. She uses her poetry as a tool of liberation, not only for herself, but also for the people to whom she addresses her message.
