Digital Zoopoetics
No full textThis article discusses the emergence of a genre of technologically mediated, computationally networked zoopoetic practices. I approach this discussion through an analysis of contemporary examples of zoopoetry, firstly drawing on print-based examples such as the poetry of e. e. cummings and the poetic animal dialogue of the novelist Laura Jean McKay. I then consider the ways in which digital technologies and digital aesthetics have the potential to add modes and imaginaries to zoopoetic authorial practices. I introduce digital zoopoetics through the creation of two related digital interfaces: The (m)Otherhood of Meep (2023) and The Songbird Speaks (2024-ongoing). These works invite new imaginaries for interspecies signal interpretation through machine learning technology by moving towards generative interspecies translation as its own zoopoetic form. From the practical contribution to zoopoetics that these works make, I offer a non-exhaustive series of suggested affordances of digital and computational aesthetics that come forth as representative of a digital zoopoetry form.Este artigo discute a emergência de um género de práticas zoopoéticas tecnologicamente mediadas e computacionalmente interligadas. Abordo esta discussão através de uma análise da zoopoética contemporânea, recorrendo primeiro a exemplos de literatura impressa, como a poesia de e. e. cummings e o diálogo poético animal da romancista Laura Jean McKay. Em seguida, considero a forma como as tecnologias digitais e a estética digital têm o potencial de acrescentar modos e imaginários às práticas autorais zoopoéticas. Apresento a zoopoética digital através da criação de duas interfaces digitais relacionadas: The (m)Otherhood of Meep (2023) e The Songbird Speaks (2024). Estes trabalhos convidam a novos imaginários para a interpretação de sinais interespécies por meio da tecnologia de aprendizagem da máquina, avançando em direção à tradução generativa interespécies como sua própria forma zoopoética. A partir da contribuição prática para a zoopoética que estes trabalhos fazem, ofereço uma série não exaustiva de sugestões de carcaterísticas da estética digital e computacional que surgem como representativas de uma forma de zoopoesia digital

No full textRooted in European tradition since the medieval period, brotherhoods were established by laypeople and devout members of the Catholic Church to foster professional, charitable, and devotional networks at the local level. This study surveys the confraternities dedicated to the souls and the deceased in both the district and the city of Coimbra. Particular focus is given to two rural communities—Cadima and Seixo de Gatões—offering a contribution to the broader understanding of such associations in rural contexts. The research sheds light on both the charitable functions of these brotherhoods—such as support at the time of death, assistance with burial, and the offering of suffrages for souls—and their devotional roles, which became integral to the daily life and collective identity of these communities. Furthermore, it also examines the forms of sociability promoted among members, the penalties imposed on transgressors, and the rituals that these associations sought to formalize and regulate through their statutes.Existentes na Europa desde os tempos medievos, as irmandades foram criadas por particulares e homens devotos da Igreja Católica, com o propósito de estabelecer dinâmicas de âmbito profissional/corporativo, assistencial e devocional ao nível local. Neste trabalho, procedeu-se ao levantamento das confrarias sob invocação das almas ou defuntos no distrito e na cidade de Coimbra. Centra-se, depois, nessas irmandades em duas comunidades, Cadima e Seixo de Gatões, procurando constituir-se como um contributo para o conhecimento das irmandades das almas e defuntos em contexto rural, percecionando-se dinâmicas tanto de índole assistencial, asseguradas na hora da morte, no acompanhamento à sepultura e no sufrágio das almas, como de natureza devocional, que acabavam por se estabelecer como partes integrantes dos quotidianos e identidade destas comunidades. Também se aferirão as sociabilidades promovidas pelos irmãos para o fortalecimento de laços, as penalizações aplicadas aos infratores e os rituais, realidades que os compromissos destas agremiações previam e procuravam instituir e regular

No full textBased on the portuguese press, both national and local, as well as on memorial works, this article examines General José Sanjurjo's stay in Portugal between 1934 and 1936, and through his presence analyzes how Portuguese territory, especially the Estoril region, served as a stage for the conspiracy to overthrow the Spanish Republic. By analyzing the way in which Sanjurjo was received and welcomed in Portugal, it shows the portuguese alignment with the plans of the Spanish rebels and the importance of the country in the execution of the military coup of July 1936.Recorrendo à imprensa portuguesa, nacional e local, e a obras memorialistas, este artigo aborda a estada do general José Sanjurjo em Portugal entre 1934 e 1936 e, através da sua presença, analisa a forma como o território português, em particular a região do Estoril, serviu de palco à conspiração destinada a derrubar a República espanhola. Através da análise do modo como Sanjurjo foi recebido e acolhido em Portugal, demonstra-se o alinhamento português com os planos dos rebeldes espanhóis e a importância que o país teve na concretização do golpe militar de julho de 1936

No full textFor a long time, Italian academic tradition viewed the cultural and historical interpretation of the Lombards as simple and uniform, shaped largely by the 19th-century author Alessandro Manzoni, a key cultural figure and author of The Betrothed. In his view, modern Italians were seen as direct descendants of the Romans, periodically reemerging during defining national epochs like the Renaissance and the Risorgimento. Within this framework, the Lombards were dismissed as just another group of foreign invaders. This perspective has significantly shifted in recent decades. Following the decline of Italy’s ‘First Republic’, the rise of regional political movements, and the development of the European Union, the Lombards have been reinterpreted in more complex ways: in some cases, being viewed as regional ancestors supporting new territorial identities; in others, as early contributors to a pan-European identity. These reinterpretations parallel earlier local-national tensions after Italy’s unification in 1861. Archaeological discoveries have further supported these revised views

No full textHereby we intend to examine the way by which tyranny and the tyrant are presented in Republic, a Platonic dialogue around which we will circumscribe the present study. Our interest emerges from the resurgence, in the 21st century, of democratically elected regimes that, however, flirt with authoritarianism. Socrates’ thesis, presented in Republic VIII (562b-563e), according to which tyranny arises from within democracy, highlights the contradictions inherent in this government regime since its beginnings, helping us to rethink it today. For the purposes of this study we follow the emergence of the issue of tyranny from the first book of the dialogue, until we reach the proper examination of this regime in books VIII and IX, up to which we are faced with the surprising argument that inside each one of us inhabits a sleeping tyrant (Rep.IX, 576b4-6). The city-soul analogy proposed in Republic II, as well as the composite soul thesis in Republic IV work as guiding conceptions of our investigation.Neste artigo pretendemos abordar o modo como a tirania e o tirano são apresentados na República, diálogo platônico sobre o qual iremos circunscrever o presente exame. Nosso interesse emerge do ressurgimento, em pleno século XXI, de regimes democraticamente eleitos que, todavia, flertam com o autoritarismo. A tese defendida por Sócrates em República VIII (562b-563e), segundo a qual a tirania nasce do interior da democracia, evidencia as contradições inerentes a esse regime de governo desde seus primórdios, ajudando-nos a repensá-lo nos dias atuais. Para efeito do presente exame, acompanhamos o surgimento do tema da tirania desde o primeiro livro do diálogo, até chegar ao enfoque propriamente dito desse regime nos livros VIII e IX, em que nos deparamos com o surpreendente argumento de que em cada um de nós habita um tirano adormecido (Rep. IX, 576b4-6). A analogia cidade-alma proposta em República II, bem como a tese da alma compósita, em República IV, servem de eixos norteadores para a nossa reflexão

No full textWe presente the trnaslation of a specific passage from the novel Leucippe and Clitophon, by Achilles Tatius: the scene in which the main character goes to meet his cousin Clinias and receives from him valuable teachings on seduction. This passage draws our attention because it dialogues with Roman erotic elegy, especially Ovid's Ars Amatoria, and because of its concise, unitary structure, which resonates like a short story within the novel. We have sought to recreate in our translation aesthetic and literary elements that resonate with these elements, especially the dynamism of the narrative, without losing the lyrical - or elegiac - nuances of the text.Apresentamos a tradução de uma passagem específica do romance Leucipe e Clitofonte, de Aquiles Tácio: a cena em que o personagem principal vai ao encontro de seu primo Clínias e recebe dele valiosos ensinamentos sobre sedução. Tal passagem nos chama a atenção por dialogar com a elegia erótica romana, especialmente com a Ars Amatoria de Ovídio e, pela sua estrutura concisa e unitária que ressoa como um pequeno conto dentro do romance. Buscamos, então, recriar em nossa tradução elementos estéticos e literários que ressoem estes aspectos, especialmente o dinamismo da narrativa, sem perder as nuances líricas - ou elegíacas - do texto
