Alexandre Herculano’s “A abóbada (1401)”: a parodied forgery and coarse replicas of a patriotic narrative about Batalha
This article focuses on the short story “A abóbada (1401)” (The vault [1401]) by the Portuguese author Alexandre Herculano with a view to analyse the origin and development of a narrative that established national and international debates on the historiography of the Gothic architecture in Portugal. The article starts by examining the origins and development of the legend of the vault in Batalha’s chapter house, simultaneously with a discussion of the emergence of the monastery’s modern historiography. This is followed by a critical analysis of Herculano’s short story. Part three assesses the impact that, until recently, the tenets generated by Herculano’s narrative have had on the historiographical discourse centred on Batalha’s monastery, which alternated between ideas of a “national” and a “foreign” origin of its architecture.

This paper proposes an evaluation of current projects for identifying the contents of assumed wine transport amphorae recovered in the archaeological excavations in Conimbriga (prov. Lusitania, Portugal).
The sampling strategy of known typologies of wine amphorae of Italic, Gaullish and Iberian origin, as well as other, locally produced typologies of uncertain use is described, as well as the methodologies of analysis, both by GC-MS and by LC-MS/MS.
The results of those analyses are presented in conjunction with the typological classification, as means to assess the weight of the production of wine destined to export in the context of the local agricultural activity.
Methodological issues concerning sample retrieval and analytical procedures are discussed in the context of planned future research.
To Understand the Territory to Be Part of It
This essay delves into the course programme of the Atelier Mayol at the Accademia di Architettura di Mendrisio 2023–24. The atelier focused on the topic of the summer house, understanding summer as a moment where daily routine is temporary suspended and conventional domestic spaces are questioned.
The semester was an occasion to collectively discuss living and to re-think the way we approach the theme of habitation. Learning to doubt. To think the building as an ecosystem. To approach the house as part of a territory. To observe, understand and interpret the local tradition and identity of a place. To work locally. To make responsible use of local resources. To value the logic of construction. To understand that form follows climate. Learning from tradition to revert the global warming tendency.
The atelier worked in three different places located in three distinct areas of Mallorca. Banyalbufar, a terraced landscape in the north of the island. Sant Joan, a flat landscape in the centre. Es Salobrar de Campos, salt flats next to the sea. Three locations that explain Mallorca
Liberdade e Poder em “A Tourada” de A Naifa: Análise Crítica do Discurso Multimodal
This article analyses the music video for the song “A Tourada” by the artistic project A Naifa based on the reading of multimodal signifiers that refer to the imagery of the April Revolution. Using the Critical Analysis of Multimodal Discourse (ACDM), we aim to examine the discourse elaborated in the “videoclip” as an expression that constructs and reproduces resistance to power. Therefore, we start from the theoretical basis that it is fundamental to analyse and interpret multimodal discourse, considering the beliefs shared by those who (re)elaborate the discourse, the set of historical and individual experiences and the socio-historical context in which it is framed. Since it is a multimodal discourse, i.e. composed of different modes, it will be essential not only to characterise the ideological coordinates of resistance, but also to describe and analyse the diverse semiotic relationships established.
Ambivalence in contemporary Sunni Islamism: A challenge for western liberal democracies
In recent years, the concept of Islamism has become familiar in Western academia and Western political discourse. It is often linked with political upheavals and extremist violence using Islamic rhetoric. However, do we fully understand what this ambiguous concept refers to? Should it be seen as a unique aspect of Islam or as a secular ideology? Islamism is not simply an abstract representation of the Islamic faith or an exaggeration of Islam. While it originates from that context, it operates on a different level. This essay will analyse contemporary Sunni Islamism as a movement that, like any other social and political movement, has a specific doctrine. It draws inspiration from a secular ideology, using specific forms of political action to achieve its goals. However, there is a significant distinction: It is an ideology with religious principles that are put into immediate practice, meaning these principles are used as tools to analyse social and political conflicts, challenging the Western concepts of political liberty. Contemporary Sunni Islamism is a political ideology that formulates governance based on the Quran, seeking the establishment of an Islamic political entity. However, the extent of religion's influence on this political ideology is yet to be determined. This essay aims to illuminate these issues by providing a conceptual analysis of the various Western frameworks for contemporary Islamism, an ideology that presents religious precepts that seek to be transformed into immediate praxis, a challenge for Western liberal democracies. In recent years, the concept of Islamism has become familiar in Western academia and Western political discourse.
