    Profile of Staphylococcus aureus Originating from Nasal Cavity Swabs of Food Handlers at the University of Mataram Canteen

    Staphylococcus aureus is a Gram-positive bacteria that is widespread on human skin and mucosa and can cause a range of ailments, from food poisoning to serious and life-threatening infections. Food handlers are directly linked to food hygiene since they can be a source of infection. The purpose of this study was to detect the presence of S. aureus bacteria in the nasal cavity of canteen handlers in the University of Mataram. This study used a cross-sectional descriptive research design with a population of all food handlers at the University of Mataram canteen. This study was conducted through the stages of isolation, culture, Gram staining, and biochemical detection. The sampling technique used in this study was purposive sampling. This study was conducted on 10 samples of nasal cavity swabs of food handlers in the canteen of the University of Mataram with 5 (50%) positive samples of S. aureus. Meanwhile, the other 5 (50%) samples were indicated to be types of Staphylococcus sp. other species. It can be concluded that the presence of S. aureus was found in food handlers at the University of Mataram Canteen and food handlers are also expected to improve the application of hygiene and sanitation to themselves

    Antibacterial Effectiveness Test of Roselle Flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) Ethanol Extract Against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Propionibacterium acnes Bacteria

    Bacterial infections are a growing global health challenge, especially with the increasing cases of antibiotic resistance. This study used a true experimental method with a posttest-only control group design to investigate the antibacterial efficacy of roselle flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) ethanol extract against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Propionibacterium acnes. The maceration method was used to extract the roselle flowers using 70% ethanol as the solvent, and the disc diffusion method was used to test for antibacterial activity at extract concentrations of 30%, 40%, and 50%, using the antibiotic chloramphenicol as a positive control. The results showed that the roselle flower ethanol extract exhibited antibacterial activity against all three test bacteria. The highest inhibition zone against E. coli was found at 50% concentration (9.87 mm), classified as moderate. For S. aureus, the 50% concentration produced the highest inhibition zone (18.13 mm) with strong classification, while 30% and 40% concentrations also demonstrated strong inhibitory effects. For P. acnes, all extract concentrations showed strong inhibitory responses with the highest inhibition zone at 50% concentration. Chloramphenicol antibiotic consistently demonstrated higher antibacterial activity across all test bacteria. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in inhibitory effectiveness based on extract concentration and bacterial type (p<0.001), with a significant interaction between these two factors (η²=0.605). These findings indicate the potential development of roselle flower ethanol extract as a natural antibacterial agent, although further optimization is needed to enhance its effectiveness

    EGF Levels in Rattus norvegicus Induced with 40 ppm Formaldehyde for 1 Month in Relation to Nasopharyngeal Cancer

    Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common malignancies in the ENT department, with a high incidence in Southeast Asia. One of the major risk factors for NPC is formaldehyde exposure, which induces oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and disruption of growth factors such as Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). This study aims to analyze changes in EGF levels in Rattus norvegicus exposed to 40 ppm formaldehyde for one month to better understand the molecular mechanisms contributing to nasopharyngeal carcinogenesis. This experimental study measured EGF levels using the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method. Data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test and a Paired T-Test to assess changes in EGF levels before and after treatment. The analysis showed a tendency for increased EGF levels after formaldehyde exposure; however, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.355). This suggests that one-month exposure to formaldehyde does not directly affect EGF expression in the tested tissue. This study found that 40 ppm formaldehyde exposure for one month did not significantly alter EGF levels. However, the observed trend in certain groups suggests that the effect of formaldehyde on EGF levels may be dose- and duration-dependent. Further studies with longer exposure durations and higher concentrations are needed to explore the link between formaldehyde exposure and nasopharyngeal carcinogenesis

    Characterization of Immobilized Cell Alginate Beads of Mudiak Sapan (MS) Isolates Producing Bioelectricity

    Bacterial immobilization is the coating or capture of bacteria with organic or inorganic compounds, by binding to the matrix through chemical binding or physically holding it in the cavity of the supporting material, so that bacteria can survive better in less adaptive environmental conditions and can still carry out their metabolism. This study aims to see the characterization of beads produced from the immobilization of the best thermophilic bacterial isolates (MS 9, 12, 17, and 18) isolated from the Mudiak Sapan hot air source. Bacterial immobilization was carried out by the trapping method using 5% alginate and analyzed descriptively. Beads were made by mixing 5% Na-Alginate solution with bacterial isolates, then dripped into 0.2 M CaCl₂. Bead characteristics were observed based on shape, color, and diameter. The results showed that at a concentration of 5% alginate produced beads that tended to be round and rotten white in color with the number of bacterial colonies ranging from 107x101 to 137x101

    Betasianin Analysis of Dragon Fruit (Hyolecerus polyrhizus) West Sumatra as A Natural Colorant

    The growing demand for natural food colorants, driven by consumer awareness of the health risks associated with synthetic additives, has increased the exploration of plant-based pigments. Betacyanin, a red-violet pigment in the betalain group, has drawn attention for its color stability and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to analyze the betacyanin content in the peel of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) from two cultivation areas in West Sumatra (Tanah Datar and Bukittinggi) as a potential natural food colorant. The dragon fruit peels were dried, ground into powder, and extracted using 10% citric acid solution. The extract was concentrated and analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry. Results showed a significant difference in betacyanin levels between the two sources: Tanah Datar samples had an average of 28.48±0.19 mg/100g, while Bukittinggi samples had 3.52±0.07 mg/100g. These findings suggest that geographical and environmental factors significantly affect pigment accumulation. It is recommended that Tanah Datar dragon fruit peel be further developed as a natural colorant due to its high betacyanin content, supporting sustainable practices and waste reduction in food processing

    Ethnobotanical Study in the Sianok Canyon Community Agam Regency West Sumatra

    Ethnobotany describes the direct relationship between humans and plants in traditional use. Ethnobotany has various uses for people with plants, including food, medicine, tools, infrastructure, culture, and small and medium industries in everyday life. This study aims to examine the use of plants in the daily lives of the people of Nagari Sianok, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, through an ethnobotanical approach. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection techniques through interviews, field observations, and documentation. The results of the study showed that the people of Nagari Sianok utilize 55 plant species from 33 families for various needs, including as cooking spices, traditional medicines, building materials, tools, and customary needs and small household industries. The Zingiberaceae family is the most widely used, followed by Solanaceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Amaryllidaceae. The parts of the plant used include leaves (34.3%), tubers (29.6%), stems (19.1%), fruits (13.3%), flowers (2.2%), and seeds (1.4%). The main sources of raw materials come from markets (68.2%), home gardens (22.9%), and gardens (8.3%). The most widely used species are Curcuma longa (Linn.), Zingiber officinale Roscoe, and Alpinia galanga, which are used as spices and traditional medicines. These results indicate that the people of Nagari Sianok have rich ethnobotanical knowledge and still maintain local wisdom in utilizing plants

    Phenology of Flowering Time and Flowering Duration of Tomato Plants (Solanum lycopersicum L.) in Kamang Magek District and Padang City

    Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is one of the horticultural commodities with high economic value whose growth is greatly influenced by environmental conditions. This study aims to examine the phenology of tomato plants, including the time of flowering and flowering duration in different environmental conditions as a basis for developing more effective cultivation techniques. The study was conducted in two locations, namely Kamang Magek District and Padang City, with 20 replications per location. Phenology observations were carried out on the time of flowering and flowering duration of tomato plants, and the data obtained were analyzed using the t-test at a significance level of 5%. The results showed a significant difference between the two locations, where the average time of flowering in Kamang Magek District was 38.5 days after planting (DAP) with a flowering duration of 10.85 days, while in Padang City the time of flowering occurred at 75.8 DAP with a flowering duration of 30.3 days. This difference indicates that environmental conditions in Kamang Magek District are more supportive of accelerating the flowering phase with a shorter flowering cycle

    Utilization of Black Rice Var Wojalaka with Lemongrass Essential Oil as a Face Mask

    Black rice contains antioxidants that neutralize free radicals, helping prevent wrinkles and skin damage. Fragrant lemongrass produces essential oils with citronellal, geraniol, and citronellol, which have antibacterial effects. This study aims to develop and evaluate a face mask combining black rice extract and citronella essential oil to nourish, cleanse, and tighten the skin. Masks were formulated with black rice concentrations of 30%, 40%, and 50%. Evaluations included phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity (DPPH assay), organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, dispersibility, and physical stability. Black rice extract showed antioxidant content of 0.037 mg/L, while the mask formulations exhibited strong antioxidant activity at 2.231 mg/L. The FII mask met Indonesian National Standard (SNI) criteria for physical stability. Clinical tests from week 2 to 6 on volunteers revealed that the FIII mask improved skin firmness, reduced acne and black spots, and increased moisture. This research demonstrates that combining black rice antioxidants with citronella essential oil produces an effective natural face mask that enhances skin health

    Bibliometric Analysis: The Potential of Beetroot (Beta vulgaris) for Diabetes Patients

    This research aims to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of scientific publications on the potential of beetroot (Beta vulgaris) for diabetes patients. A quantitative method was employed by systematically collecting data from the Scopus database covering the period 2014-2023, using the specific keywords "Beta Vulgaris Or Beetroot and Diabetes or Blood and Sugar or Insulin". From the initial 153 indexed documents retrieved, 113 relevant articles were selected and subjected to detailed analysis. VOS Viewer software was utilized to generate network, overlay, and density visualizations, enabling exploration of complex relationships between publications, keywords, and research trends. The results reveal that publications can be categorized into two distinct clusters, with the most frequently occurring keywords being insulin, beetroot, metabolism, and Beta vulgaris. The year 2021 was identified as the peak period for research on beetroot's potential for diabetes management, indicating growing scientific interest in this area. This bibliometric analysis provides a valuable foundation for further development of evidence-based studies on the benefits of beetroot in diabetes management and opens avenues for innovative therapeutic approaches using this natural resource

    Diversity of Fiddler Crab (Uca spp.) in The Mangrove Area of Gerupuk Beach Central Lombok

    The great influence that ball crabs have on changes in the physical and biochemical aspects of the environment so that they become biota that inhabit microhabitats. Mangrove ecosystem, this can have an impact on the quantity and diversity of fiddler crab species (Uca spp.). One of the coastal locations of Central Lombok is quite large, namely Gerupuk Beach. The purpose of this study was to diversity of fiddler crabs and distribution pattern in the mangrove area of Gerupuk Beach, Central Lombok and to see the validity of the learning videos in this study. The quadratic transect approach was used to conduct the field study from December 2024 to February 2025. Convenience was used to decide the research stations. There were 247 fiddler crabs (Uca spp.) in all stations, according to the results. These individuals were divided into four subgenus and included seven different species: Uca perplexa, Uca triangularis, Uca tetragonon, Uca crassipes, Uca bellator, Uca dussumeiri, and Uca forcipata. The three stations' diversity (H'), which was classified as medium level, ranged from 1.318 to 1.897. The evenness index (E) ranged from 0.677 to 0.975, falling within the relatively even range. Additionally, fiddler crabs' dominance index (C) falls between 0.156-0.310 for the low dominance category
