Tetra-N-propylammonium perruthenate (TPAP)
(A) Primary and secondary aliphatic and aromatic alcohols are efficiently
oxidized to the corresponding carbonyl compounds in the
presence of a tetrabutylammonium trifluoroborate group or potassium
organotrifluoroborate. Alkyl, alkenyl, and aryl trifluoroborates
were tolerated in this process, without cleavage of the
carbon–boron bond.

Isolation and screening of Streptomyces in soil of protected forest areas from the states of Assam and Tripura, India, for antimicribial metabolites
Objective. — To study the antimicrobial of Antinomycets, isolated from Northeast India.
Material and methods. — A total of 110 actinomycetes strains were isolated from the soil
samples collected from the protected forest soil from two States in Northeast India These were
then characterized by conventional methods and assessed for their antagonistic activity preliminary
against test microorganisms.
Results. — Amongthe110isolates,65(59.09%)strainsshowedantibacterialactivity,47(42.72%)
strains showed antifungal activity and 33 (30%) strains exhibited a broad-spectrum activity
against both test bacteria and fungi. The production of nonpolyenic antifungal substances by
promising isolates was investigated using several criteria: antibacterial activity, ergosterol
inhibition, and UV—vis spectra of active extracts.
Conclusion. — These results indicate that the protected areas of Northeast India’s soil microorganisms
could be an interesting source of antibacterial and antifungal bioactive substances.

Study on weed flora and their influence on patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) oil and patchoulol
Experiments were conducted to study the weed flora and its influence on the yield of oil and
Patchoulol by co-distillation of fresh Patchouli leaves with weed biomass at different proportions (0,
5, 10, 15 and 30%) during 2004-05 and 2005-06. The survey of weeds commonly growing in
patchouli plantation was made and a total of 17 weed species were recorded. Alternanthera sessile,
Cynodon dactylon and Oxalis cornicullata exhibited 100% frequency in both the years. A. sessile, C.
dactylon and O. cornicullata had highest density during 1st year and the density of most of the weed
species increased during 2nd year except C. dactylon and A. sessile. Co-distillation of fresh
Patchouli leaves with weeds at the rate of 0, 5, 10,15 and 30% yielded 0.70, 0.67, 0.65, 0.50 and
0.43% oil, respectively. It was observed that the oil yield decreased gradually with the increase in
weed biomass. However, the percentage of patchoulol showed a different behaviour. It decreased at
15% (53.7) and 30% (50.4) and increased at 5% (56.5) and 10% (63.8) treatments. The oil extracted
with weed biomass imports a weedy odour, which may decrease its commercial value. © Academic

Studies on the use of power ultrasound in solid-liquid myrobalan extraction process
Focus on eco-friendly processing techniques makes vegetable tanning a viable option in leather processing and establishes the subsequent
need for the more efficient methods of extraction in tannin manufacture. Application of ultrasound has been tried in the extraction of tannins
from myrobalan nuts in order to improve the extraction efficiency, to perform the extraction under milder process conditions and to reduce the
processtime.Theinfluenceofprocessparameterssuchasultrasonicoutputpower,timeandtemperaturehasbeenstudied.Scale-uptrialsandthe
use of ultrasound in pulse mode have also been attempted. The results show that a three- to fivefold improvement is possible with ultrasonic
output from 20 to 100 W. Extraction efficiency has been calculated from the maximum extractable materials from myrobalan nuts. Extraction
efficiencyisfoundtobe90%forultrasound,100Wwithoutexternalheatingascomparedto77%forcontrolprocessat70 Cfor4 h.Therefore,
ultrasound could be employed even dispensing with provision for temperature controls. The use of ultrasound in pulse mode offered 70%
extraction efficiencyof continuous mode. Scale-up trials indicate that there exists an optimum ultrasonic output power depending on the amount
ofnutsused, toachievebetter extraction efficiency.Theeffectivenessofultrasonicallyextractedtanninsolutionhasalsobeentestedinthetanning
process for its applicability. The degree of tanning efficacy has been assessed by shrinkage temperature measurement. The results indicate
that ultrasonically extracted tannin solution is suitable for tanning process. Therefore, application of ultrasound in tannin extract manufacture
is a viable option with added advantages.
