Exploration of chiral induction on epoxides in lipase-catalyzed epoxidation of alkenes using (2R,3S,4R,5S)-(–)-2,3:4,6-di-O-isopropylidiene-2-keto-L-gulonic acid monohydrate
Epoxidation of alkenes by peracid, generated in situ from (2R,3S,4R,5S)-(�)-2,3:4,6-di-O-isopropylidiene-
2-keto-L-gulonic acid monohydrate [(�)-DIKGA] and hydrogen peroxide by lipase catalysis induces chirality
on the product epoxides with moderate to good enantioselectivity (35–71%). Alkoxy/aralkyloxy styrenes
however did not undergo any epoxidation. (R)-(+)-4-Hydroxy styrene-7,8-oxide was formed and
isolated with moderate enantiomeric excess (57%) but was found to have poor stabilit
Genetic Diversity of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria Isolated from Rhizospheric Soil of Wheat Under Saline Condition
In this study, a total of 130 rhizobacteria was
isolated from a saline infested zone of wheat rhizosphere,
and screened for plant growth promoting (PGP) traits at
higher salt (NaCl) concentrations (2, 4, 6, and 8%). The
results revealed that 24 rhizobacterial isolates were tolerant
at 8% NaCl. Although all the 24 salt tolerable isolates
produced indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), while 10 isolates
solubilized phosphorus, eight produced siderophore, and
six produced gibberellin. However, only three isolates
showed the production of 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate
(ACC) deaminase. Diversity was analyzed through
16S rDNA-RFLP, and of these isolates with three tetra
cutter restriction enzymes (HaeIII, AluI, and MspI), the
representative cluster groups were identified by 16S rDNA
sequencing. Bacillus and Bacillus-derived genera were
dominant which showed PGP attributes at 8% NaCl concentration.
Out of 24 isolates, nitrogen fixing ability (nif H
gene) was detected in the two isolates, SU18 (Arthrobacter
sp.) and SU48

A simple, efficient, and environmentally benign method has been
developed for the exclusive formation of biologically significant 2-aryl-1-
arylmethyl-1H-benzimidazoles under the heterogeneous catalysis of Amberlite
IR-120 in aqueous media in excellent yields. The catalyst is recyclable without loss
of activity

Chitosan/polyaniline hybrid conducting biopolymer base impedimetric immunosensor to detect Ochratoxin-A
Chitosan (CS)–polyaniline (PANI) hybrid conducting biopolymer film was obtained on indium–tin-oxide
(ITO) electrode using electrochemical polymerization process. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra
of PANI–CS had showed covalent and hydrogen binding between PANI and CS molecules. Electrochemical
impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements had showed lowcharge transfer resistance (RCT) of PANI–CS
and PANI. Successive rabbit antibody (IgGs) immobilizationonPANI–CS, CS and PANI matrixes surfacewere
confirmed with FT-IR and EIS measurements. Ochratoxin-A (OTA) interaction with IgGs had increased RCT
values and showed linear response up to 10 ng/mL OTA concentration in electrolyte. Relative change in
RCT was higher in PANI–CS due to higher proportion of carboxylic and hydroxyl functionalities at PANI–CS
matrix surfaces. The absolute sensitivity of PANI, CS, and PANI–CSwere 16±6, 22±9 and 53±8�mL/ng,
respectively derived fromslope of linear response up to 10 ng/mL with 1 ng/mL minimum detection limit
Analysis of Genetic Diversity of Persea bombycina ‘‘Som’’ Using RAPD-Based Molecular Markers
The utility of RAPD markers in assessing genetic diversity and phenetic
relationships in Persea bombycina, a major tree species for golden silk (muga)
production, was investigated using 48 genotypes from northeast India. Thirteen
RAPD primer combinations generated 93 bands. On average, seven RAPD fragments
were amplified per reaction. In a UPGMA phenetic dendrogram based on
Jaccard’s coefficient, the P. bombycina accessions showed a high level of genetic
variation, as indicated by genetic similarity. The grouping in the phenogram was
highly consistent, as indicated by high values of cophenetic correlation and high
bootstrap values at the key nodes. The accessions were scattered on a plot derived
from principal correspondence analysis. The study concluded that the high level of
genetic diversity in the P. bombycina accessions may be attributed to the species’
outcrossing nature. This study may be useful in identifying diverse genetic stocks of
P. bombycina, which may then be conserved on a priority basis
Cholesterol biosensor based on electrochemically prepared polyaniline conducting polymer film in presence of a nonionic surfactant
Cholesterol biosensor has been fabricated by
covalently coupling cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) via glutaraldehyde
onto electrochemically prepared polyaniline film
in presence of TritonX-100 [4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl)
phenyl polyethylene glycol], a non-ionic surfactant onto
indium-tin-oxide (ITO) glass substrate. These ChOx/PANITX-
100/ITO bioelectrodes have been characterized using
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, cyclic
voltammetry (CV) and scanning electron microscopy
(SEM) techniques. The results of response measurements
carried out on ChOx/PANI-TX-100/ITO bioelectrodes
using amperometric and photometric techniques, reveal
detection limit as 5 mg/dl, linearity from 5 to 400 mg/dl of
cholesterol and sensitivity as 131 μA/(mg/dl cm−2). These
biosensing electrodes are thermally stable up to 65 °C, can
be used about 20 times and have a shelf-life of about 10
weeks when stored at 4 °C. Attempts have also been made
to utilize the ChOx/PANI-TX-100/ITO bioelectrodes for
estimation of free cholesterol concentration in serum
samples

Catanionic micelles as a model to mimic biological membranes in the presence of anesthetic alcohols
We show here the influence of n-alcohols (C2OH-C8OH) on the solubility behavior of cationic-anionic surfactant
mixtures, so-called “catanionics”.Westudied catanionics of different compositions composed of sodium dodecyl sulfate
(SDS)/cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecanoate (SDod)/CTAB mixtures. Interestingly,
with a molar excess of SDS, long chain n-alcohols (C4OH-C8OH) significantly depress the solubility temperature of the
SDS+CTAB catanionic and increase the kinetic stability of the solution. The visual observations of solubility
temperatures of catanionics were further confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. For
the catanionics a multistep solubilization was observed by DSC, for which the sulfate headgroup is responsible. This was
probed by replacing SDS by SDod. A remarkable analogy was found between the influence of the alcohols on the
solubility patterns of the catanionic mixtures and on the anesthesia of tadpoles. Possible reasons for this analogy are
discussed also in this paper
