In his high-school time, student movements were prevalent among his generation. However, Fukuda was not involved in those movements because his primary concern was drama. Harmful Information on the Internet and the Influence of Mass Media

In recent years, the rapid development and penetration of the Internet have brought about convenience to users on one hand, while on the other hand, so-called "black websites" are becoming a social issue. Consequently, there is an increasing numer of incidences where minors can get access to harmful material and consequently become involved in crime. To tackle such illegal and harmful information, the police have set up cyber patrols and are cracking down on those who post illegal information. Also, measures are being carried out by providers and ebulletin board administrators to prevent the sending of illegal or harmful information, and the filtering of information is performed by the receivers of information. But an enormous amount of new information is circulated daily on the Internet, and in addition, there is also data that is stored on servers installed abroad. It is very difficult to shield children from harmful web sites. The Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association, which is the representative of the mass media, opposes any move that would appear to foster government intervention, because it must refrain from making any moves that would restrict the constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of expression. However, they find it unacceptable to help with the circulation of such harmful information. The mass media enterprises in the Internet age should change their business structures and strategies. The study described in this paper examines the influences of the mass media and harmful information on the Internet

Functional Study on Adverbial Cases and Adpositions in Finno-Ugric and Indo-European

Finno-Ugric languages are renowned for possessing a rich morphological case system. Finnish has 15 basic cases and Hungarian has 18. These large number of cases can be classified into three types; grammatical, locative, and adverbial. Grammatical cases are related to syntax, but locative and adverbial cases are regarded as adjuncts, and such adjuncts have rarely been the focus of morphosyntactic studies. Among Indo-European languages, German has just four cases and English has only few of them; instead, they have many prepositions, and such prepositions act as adjuncts. This paper deals with several adverbial cases in Finno-Ugric: essive, causal (causative), and translative cases, and contrasts them with the equivalent expressions (mainly prepositional forms) of German and English. This paper has examined several forms (cases, adpositions, and conjunctions) for some adverbial meanings among four languages: English, Finnish,German, and Hungarian. There are clear morphological differences and common features between Finno-Ugric and Indo-European

This paper describes the development and subsequent analysis of a cross-sectional learner corpus comprising written samples from students in the first, second and third years of the English language writing program at Reitaku University, Japan. Students completed two writing tasks, a narrative and an argumentative essay, which were then analyzed to determine whether gains were made in the areas of fluency, lexical richness, grammatical accuracy and use of rhetorical/cohesive devices. Gains were observed in all of these four areas, the process of annotating the raw data revealed areas which were problematic for student writers but were unelaborated by the analysis employed in this research. These observations illuminate the limitations of this study and highlight directions for further analysis

Foreign Corrupt Practices as a Serious Global Risk for Business ―Lessons from the Nigerian Bribery Scandal―

In this article, we describe three main reasons why foreign corrupt practices are considered one of the most serious risks to globally-operating corporations. First, many countries, especially the 38 countries which ratified the OECD Anti-Bribery Convention, have begun to share information to combat this problem. Particularly noteworthy is that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) started to apply its Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) extraterritorially far more actively than ever. Second, countries such as the USA and EU countries began to impose severe sanctions against offenders who broke laws that prohibit corporations from providing illicit money to foreign politicians and officials. Over the past several years, the amount of penalties levied upon corporate offenders has risen exponentially. The maximum amount one corporation has paid already reached 1.6 billion US dollars. Third, the DOJ (as well as the SEC) has acquired very effective measures and tools (e. g., discretionary power to determine final penalties, plea agreements, deferred prosecution agreements, and the establishment of the FCPA Reporting Center), which make it much easier to collect and accumulate criminal information and to bring charges against FCPA offenders. For the purpose of understanding the third reason, we examine how the DOJ has tracked down the criminals (both corporations and individuals) at the Nigerian Bribery Scandal
