    Incertezza e cambiamento climatico nell’era dell’Antropocene

    No full text
Climate change appears as a major driver of identity crisis, affecting changes at local and global level in terms of spaces, security, livelihood and weather. The prevailing narration on climate change describes unfamiliar scenarios struck by exceptional events, that rarely can be connected with personal experiences. Yet, smaller but more subtle consequences of climate change occur in cities and in metropolitan areas, that suddenly appear fragile and risky contexts. The paper explores the notion of climate change, which is investigated in its constructive dimensions considering how scientific facts and social meanings contribute to shape the very notion of climate, across time and across disciplines

Ipse vidit: fotografia antropologica ottocentesca e possesso del mondo

    No full text
In Italian and foreign anthropological research with a positivist imprinting, photography is conceived as a device to make up for the documenting limitations of language: it is understood that nothing better than the image made scientifically “credible” by the optic and mechanic instrument that creates it can faithfully reproduce the analyzed human gatherings. Natural and colonized environments, people, faces, working activities, handiwork, celebrative uses, everything is captured by the researcher’s lens, in accordance with his /her possessive bulimia of documentation. The picture is therefore far away from its alleged aseptic nature and therefore forcefully enters into the dyadic relationship between the photographer and the photographed subject in a complex game of dependences, subservience, arrogance, reciprocal individual gains that end up in enlarging and above all distorting the documentation purposes and outcomes that we try to mark out within this contribution.

Marginal Uncertainties Making a Living and Working on the Outskirts of Milan

    No full text
In this article we question the meanings and social practices related to living and working in the Social Housing neighbourhoods of Milan’s present-day suburbs. Through the reconstruction of several narratives, we shed light on how uncertainty characterises the professional everyday lives of those social actors who play a particularly significant role in Milan’s complex arena of social housing management (social workers; bailiffs; inspectors; “trouble-solvers”). Isolation, neglect and conflict are the main terms used by the social actors, both to describe the ongoing housing precarity of those who are at risk of losing their homes and to frame the current conditions of social housing. These represent crucial interpretative keys for developing a thick understanding of the housing crisis

Fedir Kindratovyč Vovk: una vita per l’antropologia

    No full text
This paper recounts the life of Fedir Kindratovyč Vovk who is now considered the founder of Ukrainian Anthropology. His numerous travels and long stays in Europe allowed him not only to extend his anthropological and ethnographic studies while refining research methodologies, but also become a crucial reference point for the dissemination of scientific knowledge abroad. Great emphasis is therefore, placed on the last thirteen years of his life, a period during which Vovk devoted himself to the creation of the School of Anthropology in Saint Petersburg, the cradle of a new cultural era that has permanently marked, ever since, the future of russian anthropologists.

«La política es winka, la historia es mapuche». Alleanze, conflitti e trasformazioni all’interno della pratica politica mapuche

    No full text
The struggles for the land of the '70s saw the alliance between the Mapuche communities and the Chilean left in a "class struggle" in which the indigenous society was included within the general category of campesinos. This process was brutally interrupted by the coup of Pinochet, whose violent repression has contributed to reshape the contraposition according to the previous axis Mapuche-winka (non-Mapuche). Also as a consequence of these tensions, the current Mapuche movement is based on the ideas of self-determination and recovery of the ancestral territory, constituting as a particular "cosmopolitics" that seems to distance itself both from the Western political conception, and from the previous alliance with the Chilean left. The present paper compares the two moments through the analysis of the indigenous leader’s narrative, aiming at understanding the transformations of the Mapuche political practice and its dialectical relationship with the Chilean Other.

Faide indiane e allarmismi lombardi. La mediatizzazione del conflitto ‘etnico’ e la sua eco sulla quotidiana convivenza migranti/autoctoni

Drawing from my research on Panjabi diasporas in Lombardy, I discuss the media hype which followed the accidental murder of an Italian lady doctor occurred in Bergamo in 2013, during a brawl among Panjabi family clans. An embittered xenophobic and racist imagination tainted the local public opinion, replacing the typecast of Indians as mild laborers with ruthless criminals, enmeshed in feuds of southern Italian memory.Through ethnographic narratives and local chronicles, I contrast the stakes of immigrants and natives, citizens and officials, unraveling how the identity outcomes of that drama affected social interactions and integration of the Panjabi communities long established in the area.

Il Cilento ‘fuori di sé’. Crisi e conflitti psicologici, sociali e culturali in un’emigrazione dal Sud Italia verso altri continenti (fine ‘800-‘900)

This anthropological research - connected to individual/collective criticalities and conflicts which interested the migratory movement from Cilento (Salerno) towards other continents (end '800-'900) - is planning to investigate the umpteenth challenge to which was called a southern culture which was, in the course of the centuries, on the fringe of society, also exhausted from serious difficulties. The contribution makes use of the analysis of many letters, sent from migrants to Americas and Australia to relatives and friends of native villages, to act as an intermediary between country frustrations and suffered/inebriating transoceanic "disorientations"
