On the basis of data, presented in the article, they made a conclusion that a number of questions, both from the history or evolution of cereals farming, and from baking history, its technology and spiritual component require a deeper study at the level of individual monographs

    L’italica, etno-avventurosa vulgata del mare 1940-2000

    No full text
Between the first and second half of the twentieth century, a literature of mingled origins and nature springs in opposition to an Italian Anthropology not too focused on the marine dimension. It is the answer to the "need for the sea" that the industry, the cultural one too, instilled in large layers of the population, being them middle and lower class, as a result of the strong push to consumerism that followed the economic boom and subsequently identifies in the marine dimension a new and thriving business. The publication of technical manuals in order to explain to these "new Neptune" how to swim, dive, fish, sail, surf, drive a motorboat go hand in hand with naturalistic, historical and cultural monographs together with encyclopaedic works.  Tales of navigation and of maritime and coastal peoples also encompass elements with a strong ethnographic connotation. This context paves the way to authors with a complex and composite background: writers, journalists, photographers, documentary filmmakers, underwater fishermen, archaeologists, biologists, navigators and sailors who, in their expeditions to the seas around the globe, discover an ethnographic vein, a penchant  for observation, often the result of the long time spent on the field. The authors we are specifically dealing with, certainly contribute to document an important object of investigation: the sea, in which Italian professional anthropologists were little interested

The essay presents a comparative ethnographic research about the social life in the public housing buildings in an italian town, Lanciano (CH), and in the residential neighborhoods of the same city. The object of analysis is the positive representation of the "home producing" of food and tools. The essay theorises a consistent cultural elasticity in the public housing area, in which the creativity in tackling the economic degrowth would be expressed by recycling some local themes of rural folklore, such as the ability to maintain the spaces and to prepare many kind of foods for immediate consumption or for storage. The here described activities are aimed at family members, and are particularly displayed in hospitality ceremonies, as honour behaviors. The intent of the author is to experience a new reading (and design) of those areas starting precisely from the use that the protagonists make of houses, and from the qualification that they, by living, impart to houses and public spaces

    No full text
Despite a considerable interest in the Ukrainian humanities to the Soviet period and to the study of everyday life in that epoch, there does not exist any work so far, in which the issue of leisure time of Soviet people is researched. At the turn of the 1950-1960-ies of the ХXth century, the notion of leisure time or free time obtains an official recognition. The idea of Soviet citizens as having their own time resource, a little remainder of time which is not spent on socially useful work, or on everyday activities or transport, gets an official recognition. The idea of free time is demonstrated through certain official policies, supported by official documents. In the given article, the author will point out to a system of actions of Soviet social engineering involving the leisure time of Soviet people. On the basis of oral historical narratives of former school teachers, the author will analyze the leisure time of teachers in the second part of the ХХ-th century in the villages of Halychyna. We shall mostly deal with the so-called “serious” spending of leisure time such as reading books, Soviet newspapers, visiting village clubs, and so on. At the same time, leisure-time of village teachers, which was, as contrasted to that of city teachers, much more “modest” in its choice, less active and of a much shorter duration, will take form.On the whole, the sphere of leisure time in the Soviet era was transformed into an object of cultural policies and a matter of control on the part of the state and the party authority organs

    No full text
The article deals to research of Ukrainian ritual context of apiculture. The complex research of symbolic and semantic aspects of Ukrainian apiculture is based on separation of three fundamental ritual “units”: folk Ukrainian vision of a bee along with an insect’s status in a worldview tradition, historical process of developing the institute of patronage and defining the role of patron saints in Ukrainian apiculture; its place in a system of traditional national ritualism and, in particular, outlining the general portrait of an apiarist against the background of the past, as well as ambivalence of his character, narrative and conceptual accentuation and integral conceptualization of apiarian motives of the folk calendar (ritual activities of spring-summer and autumn-winter cycles); role of apicultural products in the Ukrainians’ ritual life (worldview visions, calendar and occasional ritualism, rituals of human life cycle, magic ritual practice). The comparative ethnological analysis of apiarian ritualism of the Ukrainians has found both local feature of separate visions and beliefs and all-Ukrainian worldview matrix of apiarian spiritual phenomenon. While comparing the data, of field and literary sources, on the ritual aspects of traditional apiculture of the residents of Ukraine and some Slavonic (and, in the broader sense – European) countries, we detect a considerable range of common features

As is known, Covid-19 has mobilized many scholars in the world who have framed the pandemic from the perspective of virology and epidemiology. This essay aims to analyze the representations of the Sicilians of Tunisia of the twentieth century. The background of their daily life was a plural Tunisia in terms of nationality, religions, social components, even if it was veined by imbalance in power (the French protectorate first, the independent State since 1956 after). Dynamics of separation and mixing ambiguously characterized the social relations of Sicilian people. They tended to share their experiences with the French, Tunisians and other nationalities, but on the other hand they tightened the borders on an "ethnic closure", too

    No full text
The artistic component is a significant part of the ethnic tradition. However, the ethnic artistic tradition has not become active field of discussion in Ukrainian ethnology yet. The author offers her own concept of ethnic artistic tradition, based on empirical studies of the relatively young (just over 200 years) tradition of beaded decoration of the Ukrainian folk costume. The proposed concept takes into consideration the scientific achievements of the Ukrainian art criticism and ethnological sciences. The author of review article tries to activate discourse about ethnic artistic tradition. Such discourse can become interesting and productive area of modern ethnological studies, particularly in the context of «authorized heritage discourse» (AHD)
