Iterative Design of Metadata Creation Tools for Resource Authors
The National Institute of Environmental Heath Sciences (NIEHS), as part of the Metadata Generation Research Project, is exploring resource authors' abilities for creating acceptable metadata. As part of this work, two different versions of the NIEHS Dublin Core-based metadata generation tool have been tested. An iterative design approach, supported by cognitive walkthroughs, guided the design of the NIEHS metadata application. This paper
reports on the design process and on two author surveys that gathered feedback on the usability of both versions of the NIEHS metadata application (Version 1.0 and 2.0). The results show a slight improvement between Version 1.0 and Version 2.0. The paper concludes by summarizing key findings and identifying further research needs specific to author generated metadata tools
Analyzing Metadata for Effective Use and Re-Use
Using a commercially available visual graphical analysis tool, the National Science Digital Library (NSDL) has developed techniques to expedite evaluation of large batches of metadata. These techniques allow efficient and thorough review of large quantities of XML metadata, thus enabling the focus of limited resources on evaluation and manipulation tasks that are most important in our context. In the NSDL, metadata is evaluated for aggregation, but these techniques are applicable to any situation where batches of metadata need to be evaluated. This paper discusses the motivations for this approach and the techniques themselves
Metadata with a MISSION: Using Metadata to Query Distributed Statistical Meta-information Syste
This paper describes the technologies developed for the extraction and publication of large volumes of statistical information, such as are produced by public data collection organisations and National Statistical Institutes (NSIs); the approach has been implemented in the MISSION system that has been developed as part of a EU Fifth Framework project. We review the MISSION system, and then focus on our novel approach that utilises metadata to simplify the user interface and database query process, by allowing the user to browse metadata to compose a query by specifying the format of the answer. The system then decomposes the request into query fragments, works out what type of data could be used to answer these query fragments, and searches the metadata to find where such data can be found and what processing is required. Once the query has been composed, data and metadata are retrieved from the distributed sites, processed, combined appropriately and the result returned to the user
Using the OpenURL Framework to Locate Bibliographic Resources
OpenURLs are already in use in digital library information services providing links between resources that are appropriate to the context of the end-user. The OpenURL Framework for Context-Sensitive Services, a
systematic generalisation of the existing de facto standard OpenURL, is currently an ANSI/NISO 'draft standard for trial use'. The zetoc current awareness service has implemented OpenURL links enabling its users to access services pertinent to discovered article records, including their full text. The ‘ContextObject’ of the OpenURL Framework supplies a standard way of encoding the bibliographic citation information for a scholarly resource within a Dublin Core metadata record

Integrating Metadata Schema Registries with Digital Preservation Systems to Support Interoperability: a Proposal
There are a large number of metadata standards and initiatives that have relevance to digital preservation, e.g. those designed to support the work of national and research libraries, archives and digitization initiatives. This paper introduces some of these, noting that the developers of some have acknowledged the importance of maintaining or re-using existing metadata. It is argued here that the implementation of metadata registries as part of a digital preservation system may assist repositories in enabling the management and re-use of this metadata and may also help interoperability, namely the exchange of metadata and information packages between repositories
Search and Delivery of Standardized Learning Resources Based on SOAP Messaging and Native XML Databases
With the progress of Web-based learning technologies, standardized digital repositories and learning management systems are becoming prevalent over time. The heterogeneity in underlying databases and access methods, however, makes it difficult to share and exchange the learning resources between them. In this paper, we propose an architecture for the search and delivery of learning resources. Based on the SOAP transmission protocol, the architecture seeks to improve interoperability between heterogeneous E-Learning implementations. We also present a general-purpose query language as a building block of the architecture. The language provides a unified query interface for resource repositories, thereby shielding the users from the differences in underlying databases and metadata schemas. To highlight our design, an implementation using LOM, native XML database and XPath is presented. The last part of this paper discusses technical and pedagogical issues of concern regarding the launching of contents from within standardized LMSs
Study of 13-17th century Marathi manuscripts: author generated metadata and its mapping with Dublin Core
This paper reports on a study that examined the author generated metadata for 13th–17th century manuscripts. For the study 30 different handwritten Marathi (local language of Maharashtra State, India) manuscripts by Marathi poet saints were analyzed critically especially the start and end note areas (colophon area) from which one can easily identify the author, subject, geographical area, time period of the manuscript, etc. An attempt is made to map these author-generated metadata with Dublin Core elements set. Translated DC elements into Marathi are also used for mapping purpose. The results indicate that authors created good quality metadata to classify the manuscript easily. This research suggests that metadata created by poet saints from 13th–17th century can be easily mapped with DC elements. There are key metadata elements found in manuscripts that need to be incorporated. The study is very significant as the digitization of these manuscripts is under progress and the basic metadata will be useful for "resource discovery" once the data will be made available on the Internet
Statistical Metadata Needs during Integration Tasks
As part of an NSF-funded effort to work toward a national statistical knowledge network, we have been working to determine what elements of statistical metadata are most crucial for end users as they attempt to find and use data from US Federal statistical websites. We report here preliminary findings from a study conducted to compare how experts and end users interact with statistical data and discuss the implications of these findings on the construction of architectures and interfaces designed to integrate statistical data across agencies
PB Core--the Public Broadcasting Metadata Initiative: Progress Report
PB Core is the result of the public broadcasting metadata initiative (PBMI). It is an effort of the public radio and television broadcasters to develop a schema for the description of their assets. PBMI is under the auspices of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The paper discusses the user-centered development of the schema, the elements of the PB Core, the application profile, and the feedback and evaluation process of the schema
