The Use of Metadata for the Identification and Retrieval of Resources for K–12 Education
Educators and publishers in the field of K–12 education have long had an interest in identifying and retrieving curriculum materials by the learning objectives that these materials serve. A review of the efforts undertaken to accomplish this goal highlights a number of continuing problems and informs a set of criteria for the development of a schema that would be useful for identifying and retrieving educational resources. One such schema and its value space is offered as a solution, which exploits a unique resource developed at Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL)
A Subject gateway in Multiple Languages: A Prototype Development and Lessons Learned
The Internet has a lot of rich information resources available in different languages aside from English, the major language of use. Those resources are, however, not easy to access because of language barriers. This paper proposes a collaborative model to develop a multilingual subject gateway, which is called the Internet Public Library Asia (IPL-Asia). It describes how IPLAsia was conceived and developed, and some lessons learned from the experience.
IPL-Asia is a subject gateway which collects high quality Internet resources expressed in Chinese, Japanese, Korean languages, and provides information about those resources in those three languages and English. This paper shows the metadata schema and an implementation of IPL-Asia. The schema is defined based on Dublin Core and IEEE LOM with some extensions for multilingual description. Criteria for selecting quality resources on the Internet were also defined. A metadata record is collaboratively described in multiple languages by catalogers whose mother languages are different. A metadata record is encoded in XML. Metadata records are stored and displayed using XML technologies, e.g., XSLT and XML database. This system provides user interfaces in multiple languages

A Preliminary Investigation of Metadata Description Mechanisms for Materials Science
Materials Property Data Markup Language (MatML) provides detailed materials property information necessary for the exchange of materials science digital resources among users. Dublin Core (DC) provides a consistent generic characterization of content important for resource discovery. The feasibility of reusing detailed information provided by MatML to supply DC metadata is explored. Preliminary data gathered from three examples of
materials science resources indicates that MatML tags may be successfully mapped to DC elements. A prototype webbased authoring tool designed to assist authors in generating MatML as well as to map MatML information to DC elements is discussed
Functional Requirements of Metadata System: From User Needs Perspective
This paper aims to construct a common set of functional requirements for metadata systems based on the research of metadata system specifications at the National Digital Archives Program (NDAP) in Taiwan. Eight projects of the NDAP are chosen as a case study to examine the functional requirements of metadata systems across museums, libraries, archives, and herbaria communities. To enable deeper analysis of functional requirements, interviewing and system prototyping are also employed. The study concludes with four findings for metadata system functions and proposes two recommendations, including (1) a set of recommendations for content experts, metadata professionals, and system designers to develop a clear and appropriate metadata system; and (2) the spectrum of functional requirements for metadata system design and testing
Assessing Metadata Utilization: An Analysis of MARC Content Designation Use
Metadata schemes emerge to meet community and user requirements, and they evolve over time to meet changing requirements. This paper reports results of an analysis of a large sample of MARC 21 bibliographic records. MARC 21 is an encoding scheme related closely to metadata elements occurring in library bibliographic records. The records were analyzed for the utilization of content designation available in MARC 21. Results indicate that less that 5% of available content designation accounts for over 80% of occurrences .The implications of these findings affect indexing policies, system design, and can inform setting requirements for extending a metadata scheme based on a threshold of community requirements
Automatically Categorizing Metadata Databases into a Categorization Scheme on a Large Scale Web Site
In order to provide thematic access to the large scale web site of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we have adapted a scheme used in bibliographical databases to allow subject browsing on FAO’s web site. This requires categorizing existing database records across the organizations web sites into the new scheme. An algorithm to automatically categorize these metadata records based on their subject descriptors has been devised
Access to Italian legal literature: Integration between Structured Repositories and Web Documents
The problems of accessing legal information and, in particular, legal literature are examined in conjunction with the creation of a portal to Italian legal doctrine. The design and implementation of services such as integrated access to a wide range of resources are described, with a focus on the importance of exploiting metadata assigned to disparate legal material. On the basis of the results of a survey of legal users’ requirements, the main features of the planned system are presented: accurate selection of resources, user profiling and assistance in the search process, reliance on rich and consistent metadata, navigation facilities for legal literature, legislation and case-law sources.
The strategies devised have been experimented, such as the mapping of both the UNIMARC format and a proprietary citation format for journal articles to the Dublin Core unqualified metadata set and to DCMI cite. These formats are extracted respectively from OPACs and from a well-established legal bibliographic database, DoGi. Specific semantic problems of legal literature indexing are tackled, mainly concerning classification systems.
Similar issues are present in legal doctrine available on the web. In particular web documents usually lack metadata and, where present, they do not usually conform to well-established metadata patterns.
A research study was therefore carried out, followed by the creation of a prototype and testing with the aim of automatically providing web documents with DC metadata, thereby supporting the intellectual activity of a
service provider in organizing qualified access services to web documents.
The integration of structured repositories and web documents is the main purpose of the portal: it is constructed on the basis of a federation system with service provider functions, aiming at creating a centralized index of such resources. The index is based on a uniform metadata view created for structured data by means of the OAI approach and for web documents by a machine learning approach
Imagining the Northwest : A Digital Library Partnership in Oregon
This paper documents the development of a digital library of still images created by photographer Lee Moorhouse on the Umatilla Indian Reservation at the turn of the 20th century. The University of Oregon Libraries, working with the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla, developed a Dublin Core compliant metadata structure. The metadata structure accommodates descriptive metadata from different cultural perspectives as well as technical and administrative metadata about multiple manifestations of images. The paper also details the development of scanning and color management methodologies, the design and application of controlled vocabularies, and the implementation of the metadata structure in the CONTENTdm Software Suite. The authors discuss the challenges of creating a flexible and interoperable metadata structure and explore the use of XSLT as a mechanism for transforming metadata exported from CONTENTdm into more granular formats. The paper concludes with a discussion of recommended best practices and future directions. The project is currently in progress and will be completed in Fall 2003
